The capital of France, also known as 'The City of Lights', in many ways is a living blend of old and new. It has been the center of French government for hundreds of years. One of the most well know land marks in the city and in the world is definitely The Eiffel Tower. was erected for the 1889 Universal Exhibition to commemorate the French Revolution's centenary. Named after its designer, Gustave Eiffel, it is 320 meters high (1050 feet) and was the highest building in the world until 1930.
Once one of the French aristocrats' favorite walk, the Avenue des Champs Elysées was the symbol of what Paris was about : style and joie de vivre. Designed by Le Nôtre, this avenue was always a busy place with its hôtels particuliers and carriages. With its famous Arc de Triomphe and obelisk, it is the venue for great national events and the traditional military parade on the 14th of July. Unfortunately, the multiplying number of large car showrooms, cinemas and fast-food eateries has somewhat tarnished the Avenue's reputation.
The Louvre Museum is one of the largest and most important museums in the world. It is housed in the expansive Louvre Palace, situated in the 1st arrondissement, at the heart of Paris.
Although not the largest cathedral in the world, the Notre-Dame might be the most famous of all cathedrals. The gothic masterpiece is located on the Île de la Cité, a small island in the heart of the city.
