Astronomy Picture of the Day for Android
There was an update involving APOD's website data transfer protocol, but in turn no update was made for the app. As of now, the daily pictures no longer update and haven't since mid December. Apparently the developer hasn't been responding, leaving me no other recourse but to uninstall. This saddens me greatly, as I've had this app for years and love it. I'll keep checking back to see if anything changes.
Sorry Sam after many years of liking this app, these changes have killed it over the last year. It has become clunky and pictures are hide behind titles. All the fancy pants settings fail to do what the say or freeze. After a year of ugly on my screen uninstalling. It's a shame, was a favorite.
I'm not sure what is going on with the app. I have had it for some time and it was working to some degree. I had to open the app and update the pic from there to show up on my phone's background. The automatic updates rarely worked. Now, for the past week it's been stuck. No updates, no new pictures. Any suggestions?? I'm using a Samsung Galaxy 7. Thank you!
I thought it was just me when my pictures hadn't updated in a few weeks, but it looks like it's happening to everyone. Several are saying the developer hasn't responded to anyone or posted anything in ages... I hope the dev isn't planning on ditching this app, it's one of the few good ones I've found out there and I've had this app for years. I love the pictures.
The app worked brilliantly on my last phone. Now it just crashes n restarts everytime i go back from viewing the description of an apod. Already posted th problem to the forum. Hope itz fixd
Update: Working again. One barrier to 5 stars is slow responsiveness from developer. Although I have used this app daily for years and previously gave it 5 stars, I strongly recommend no one waste their time downloading it. As of 12/21/2016, it stopped working. Apparently, the problem has to do with a change to NASA APOD site and should be very easy for developer to fix but he is completely unresponsive, not replying to emails, tweets or posts to the app's support newsgroup.
Paid for an early version happy to support the developer. Version in 2014 was great though always had to manually update for widgets to work. Sadly it stopped working in Dec 2016 for a couple of weeks. It seems to be back now though not updated. Not sure what to make of this.
It has never downloaded a new picture. I looked into all the settings and cannot find out what's wrong. Apart from that it's a lovely app. I wanted it to download and set my wallpaper automatically though so I'm uninstalling. Sorry.
It's been a few weeks since this app has worked. And, as far as I can see, there has been no word from the app developer on when - or even if - the app will be updated and work. Disappointing.
I love this app, having a new background every day of smoothing incredible is awesome! However, recently it has stopped updating to the latest picture and refuses to download them to my s.d. card. Please fix this!
Have used this app for years and love it. As of mid December though doesn't work at all. I have this app on my phone and tablet, but won't update with nw pics. I would give this app 5 stars normally but not now. Please fix this.
Its completely stopped, the last pic is the Sharpless 308: Star bubble which was early December 2016 i think. Ive used it as my daily wallpaper for a year or two but, alas, now its stopped
It is delightful to find 'astronomy picture of the day' as your phone's wallpaper everyday with widget to display the short title. I have installed this app on my near and dear one's phones to develop interest about this unfathomable and mysterious universe. Thanks to the developer to bring APOD to our phones homescreen.!
Very disappointed, I was looking forward to a cool astronomy wallpaper, but it hasn't refreshed for a few days now. It is up to date, but even when I press the refresh button in the app it remains on Sharpless 308 star bubble, which it has since before Christmas.
Stopped working at the end of December '16. Seems the APOD picture repository has had some changes that resulted in this app no longer working. Had the same issue with a PC version but that has been updated and now works correctly.
Something happened mid december, no longer updating have triec to email developer. Nothing. Sorry was such a great app but no longer useable. Goodbye
Seems abandoned :/ APOD has been broken since December 20, and the author hasn't posted on either the app forums or anywhere else in months. Too bad, this was a really great app.
I used to love this app. What happened, Sam? Tried uninstalling and re-installing but still stuck. Please fix and I'll restore 5 stars!
I had the same problem as many others, where the pictures hadn't updated since approximately December 20th. As of January 11th, it seems to have added all the missed pictures, and is automatically setting the wallpaper to the latest picture again.
Hasn,t worked since (tears of sun)pic? No new pics for two weeks? Tried reinstalling, nothing makes it work.5 stars if it starts working again.its an beautiful app when working as designed
I've used this app for several years now and it's always done it's job, but since upgrading to Android Lollipop it's consistently chewing through 10% of my battery life every day.
I had enjoyed this app for a long time on my old phone, but it won't show any new daily photos on my new phone. Both phones are Samsung phones.
The widget stopped updating the photo, I see the description, and either get the previous photo or (most often) a grey space with no photo at all :( notifications also stopped working, and often show some weird unrelated picture like anime?!
This app is very easy to use. I've followed APOD for years, but the chance to have it at my fingertips and to easily use its amazing photos as my Droid's wallpaper with just a touch made both the site and my phone that much better. Question, though. Whenever I click to share one of these, it always uses the link for the previous day instead. Is it me/my phone, or the app?
Sorry Sam after many years of liking this app, these changes have killed it over the last year. It has become clunky and pictures are hide behind titles. All the fancy pants settings fail to do what the say or freeze. After a year of ugly on my screen uninstalling. It's a shame, was a favorite.
Earlier I used to save images to SD card easily...now,for a couple of days I'm unable to do so...it's showing a message 'Unfortunately APOD has stopped working' and sometimes it simply says 'unable to save image'...please help...
Been using it ever since i've gone android. Wallpapers appear a bit out of sync in Google Now Launcher, it counts the Now page as well. Edit: It seems it will load the wallpaper only from the left, leaving the beautiful part always aside, very annoying if you use a single home page only. Ot should always centre the wallpaper. Also down-voting a few wallpapers would be good to get rid of images that are not worth the homepage. No matter what, it'll always be a 5 star app for me.
An app that changes my wallpaper automatically using astronomically related images. I've been looking for over a year for one THAT WORKS! And it automatically saves images to my SD card (optional) to boot. Major score.
Horrible battery hog... Using 40% of my battery!!! This app always used to work great, but the last few updates have been awful. I had it set to auto update my wallpaper everyday at 6am and notify me so I could read the little blurb about the photo... Auto update is hit and miss now, and it notifies me at random times throughout the day (if it notifies me at all!). The auto download seems to still work, so that's a plus. The battery issues are the WORST though, I'll give it until the next update...
I totally love this app. It's very convenient to be able to access apod on the go. One feature I'd love to see is the ability to add favorites/bookmarks for the pictures I love. Another feature that'd be really great is to have a Google sign in, so that I can access my favorites across devices. Thanks for the wonderful app!
I absolutely love this, and can't recommend it highly enough. Every day I have a new background on my phone, and coming from the APOD site, they are beautiful and unique and often something to discuss, every single day. I'm not sure about what people say is wrong with settings and so forth in other reviews, for me the settings work exactly right and the app doesn't run down my battery or anything. If it ever did that, those bugs must all be fixed now. Get this, you won't regret it.
Used to love this app, especially when my phone presented me with a new wallpaper each day. That no longer works unfortunately, and I have to manually set one as my wallpaper. Pls fix.
This is one of the only apps I've used on all my android phones, since 2009. Unfortunately for the last year or so, the app occasionally (about once every 2 weeks) drains my battery all day. This happened on 4.4 & now 5.1.1.Not sure why this would happen if it's just downloading a single image and setting wallpaper once daily, but if the problem persists I'll be moving on.
Why can't we swipe left & right to change pages? Pretty basic mobile device mechanics missing there. I'll stick with the APOD website thanks. Uninstalled.
I saw two issues - Browsing the archive goldmine is difficult & no control on wallpaper display. Please add a calendar to browse archive.
The pictures are almost always amazing, along with the captions and commentary. However, it is a battery hog. It uses 15-20% of my battery charge just doing background processes.
Still hasn't fixed the problem where clicking the notification shows the last picture I was viewing rather than the one in the notification, then pressing back exits the app. It makes the notification worthless.
When I share from the app or widget, the link is for the previous day. Please fix, 5 stars if you do ☺
Others suck compared to the spectacular pictures you get daily!

I love seeing the new images every day. The app makes it really easy to view all the images and their explanations. For those struggling to get their background to change every day, ensure you haven't closed the app. I find that so long as it's on the list of recent apps it works. If I swipe it off the list it then fails to update until I next open the app.
