Lviv was founded by King Daniel Romanovich in the middle of the 13th century. Around 1272 the city became the capital of Galicia-Volyn principality. The day of the medieval city was an important trade center. According to the Austrian domination the town became a center of Ukrainian and Polish national liberation movements. After the collapse of Austria-Hungary was the capital of the Western People's Republic. By World War II belonged to Poland, the Molotov - Ribbentrop Pact was annexed by the Soviet Union. Since 1991, it has been a part of independent Ukraine.
