About Go Free

★ Top Developer (awarded 2013 / 2015) ★
Google Play's strongest Go/Baduk program! To coincide with the AlphaGo - Sedol match, AI Factory has released a substantially updated product. This new version has been 3 years in preparation and improves the top play strength by 10 grades from 8 kyu to 3 dan. This is based on the new Aya program, which was the winner of the KGS World Computer Go Championship November 2014 and EGC Computer Go Tournament 2015. It is consequently a substantially bigger program, but offers much more.

With its rich strategy and simple rules, the ancient game of Go (Wei-chi/Baduk) is widely regarded as the ultimate thinking game. This product will allow you to learn and master this game!

- Full 9x9, 13x13 games (19x19 limited to 180 moves. Paid version allows whole game)
- 10 Difficulty levels from 18 Kyu to 3 Dan
- Aya Go Engine (International Gold Medallist)
- 2 Player Hotseat
- Go Rules, Handicaps. Chinese and Japanese rules supported.
- Hints at 1 Dan level to help you develop.
- Help includes a walk-through and links to teaching resources.
- Designed for both Tablet and Phone

This free version is supported by 3rd party ads. Ads may use internet connectivity, and therefore subsequent data charges may apply. The photos/media/files permission is required to allow the game to save game data to external storage, and is sometimes used to cache ads.

We we're learning Go in my Japanese class and no matter what, I could never win. I got this app to practice and it has helped me immensely, especially the back button since I can go back and see what move doomed me and figure out how I could've fixed it. It's a wonderful tool to practice and learn, I'd recommend it to anyone!

Touch isn't perfect and as such you often misplace stones. It would be nice to be able to confirm the placements with an additional button. Edit: even with the offset (which I have enabled) I misplace stones. It's not that I don't see where I place it, but sometimes just before releasing I accidently place it in an adjacent cell.

Z70%
by Z####:

It's a good game. The difficulty grades out in distinct growth. I'm no expert at Go by any means and don't know any studied strategies, but the app does help me at least understand bot patterns and the most basic concepts well

by Z####:

I never played the game before this app. I jumped in playing the computer and after getting beat several times, I started picking up the rules. I used the handicap option until I knew the basics well enough to beat the computer on easy mode. Really nice way to learn.

O70%
by O####:

I really like the app so far. The rules are very easy to understand and this gives a lot of options to change game play no matter your experience level. I am just learning the rules now and the only thing I wish they had was an explanation on how the score is calculated. I know it has a display but I wish I could learn how to tally score for if I was playing on a real go board.

H70%
by H####:

As one who had only the loosest familiarity with the rules of Go before starting, I say this app is a very harsh teacher. The sheer scale a game can reach, even on 18 kyu could probably daunt new players who aren't used to abstract games. But ultimately, this app feels like a useful introduction into one of the most complex games in history. Unless you're an experienced player, be prepared to lose a lot, in the beginning. But this app is quite good for practice.

Z70%
by Z####:

Excessively intrusive ads would completely hijack phone and gameplay. Multiple ads back-to-back that seemed to not go away. Kinda scary actually. Immediately uninstalled after first 2 incidents.

Z70%

Very nice game. I have not played this in years but used to love it. I like all but one thing about this game. The way you play your piece can be annoying

J70%
by J####:

Sometimes the computer doesn't want to admit it has lost, there were times when I dominated the board and my every move is Atari, yet the computer still placed stones before it finally conceded. Dunno if it's stubborn optimism or bug? It's super fun tho

This is a good App, and the producers actually read and reply to the reviews. Die example, I had a problem with the offset, and the producers gave me a pretty good reply. But there are still some errors with the scoring. For example, when one of my pieces were clearly dead, it was displayed as alive. And in another, one of my pieces was displayed as dead, when the rule of SEKI should've kept it alive. And try to make the introduction to the game clearer. It's really boring to read. Hope you fix these problems, since it's a really good app.

Z70%
by Z####:

I wrote a review earlier saying the ads were very intrusive, which they were. The developers have clearly addressed this as now the ads only appear between games rather than multiple times during play. Thanks for a great app and for listening to feedback!

Z70%
by Z####:

Looks good, handles well, but the scoring makes no sense. Not only are the territories calculated incorrectly (I have more territory, more alive, and more captured, but AI still wins) but when you make territories visible you begin to notice the AI plays according ONLY to the territory it calculates.... wrongly. It doesn't play by actual artificial intelligence but instead by using a algorithm which is based upon faulty scoring. Is it still playable? Yes. Would I recommend it for avid Go players? Maybe, it'll be a way of playing your not used to, you may have to try new strategies. Would I recommend it for beginners? No. This is a bad way of learning to play Go, because once you gave a human opponent having only played this, you'll be completely lost.

by Z####:

I'm not a very strong player yet so I can't say how "strong" the ai is but this app is great to pick up and play it has a ton of difficulty settings and the adds don't get in the way at all. Awesome game!

H70%
by H####:

It is hard to beat it on 9x9 board. It is also strong on 19x19 board. It is really at amateur dan level. Go engine is getting stronger. Great job, developer! Best go app I have played so far!

Z70%
by Z####:

Everything is so great. Just that UI part at start, where buttons move and disappear into right and left side, is bit annoying.

J70%
by J####:

The AI and concept is great. But it runs in the background for no reason and is full of very invasive advertising. I would upgrade to paid if it weren't for these two issues with the free version.

J70%
by J####:

The AI options are great, board size options are a good thing. Does not understand mutual life though - just "lost" another game I should've won against the AI. Also, get it from Google - I bought it through the game but then also "lost" the full version when I switched phones...

U70%
by U####:

The game is very good, especially for a free game. It almost never shows ads and runs very nice. The ai is very hard for a beginner, even at the lowest setting, but after a few retries, you start to get how to win.

U70%
by U####:

Only minus one star because it's a slight hassle open the game menu, open another menu, and then select resign. It's Go, a game where if you make a poor move early on there is no recovering and you shakes hands and resign. Thus resigning should be easier, perhaps a button on the game board. Also if AI has more territory and I pass a couple times that should be game over. It's me saying nothing I will do is going to change the outcome so please stop placing stones.

X70%
by X####:

And therefore, uninstalling. Ok, the in-app ads seem to be gone, but you're still blocking the back button in the video ads, forcing users to use the home button if they don't feel like watching an ad. UPDATE: ads during games are STILL THERE. I just got one after about six moves, had to use the home button to get out of the video ad because you block the back key, and when I got back into the app, it started a NEW game. WTFO?

Just a beginner. Saw it on naruto. A little bit like chess and this app gives you hints how to play once you have the basics do not use hints makes it more fun from mark.

T70%
by T####:

Go has subtle depth despite the rule of play being so simple. I think so many tutorials are lacking because the patterns just require experience. This app is a great way to learn because of board options and handicaps, (though I wish there was a 7x7 board). Start with a 9x9 board and a 4 handicap until you win 3 times in a row. Then try 3 handicap etc. Once you feel strong with attack and defense, try the 13x13 to get a feel for tactics. The 19x19 is insane. Maybe someday...

G70%
by G####:

The only problem is that it can't handle seki, that is, it doesn't know all the rules. If the ai calls your stones dead when they aren't ... the ai just wins. If this were fixed, I'd buy the full version and leave 5 stars.

U70%
by U####:

Somewhere around the midgame if the bot doesnt know what to do, he'll just start with endgame even though there are way more important things on the board, this happened vs the 8kyu and 5kyu bot

C70%

This is a very well thought out app with good instructions and tips as well as plenty of options to make the difficulty what it needs to be to challenge players at a variety of experience levels. An excellent way to learn Go. Well done!

U70%
by U####:

Back when I played online I was reasonably a 11 kyu to an 8 kyu. I can beat the 11 kyu ai fairly consistently but that 7 kyu machine is really difficult to me. It fits its niche really well

F70%

As someone who likes fun and fast go game its perfect! Not so much for slower and thoughtful players. Also 19x19 full game will be welcomed.

G70%

Helps you learn with out embarrassment. And if you make a mistake you can go back, reexamine, and place your stones again.

O70%
by O####:

It makes it easy to learn the game, unlike almost every other go app out there. The one thing I'd like is a social integration, ie ) a way to sign in using Facebook and find friends that are using the app too or invite them and play against contacts

U70%

I just started playing Go and this is a really helpful tool for learners. Many different difficulty levels, handicap and varying rules options, and the ability to go backwards in the game to try a new strategy.

U70%

I'm trying to teach myself to play, since there are few players in my area. I like this app, since it's challenging, but not so difficult that I get frustrated. I enjoy the graphics and sound, as well. Thanks!

Just started playing GO today & I'm already winning on the 9x9 board. This app is great for beginners because it has 9x9, 13x13 & a 19x19 board. I would also recommend tsumego pro (go problems) app as a go trainer to complement this app.

A70%

No intrusive adds and lots options for this beautiful game. It's really difficult to learn Go at first, but you'll improve very quickly by playing the AI this app provides.

I got this game to teach myself Go. The tutorial and rules sections are less than clear and could use some work. But the game itself is pretty good.

U70%

I've always wanted to learn go but have never understood the rules. This app has the easiest rules to understand I've ever read. I'm finally playing Go!

U70%

This is a fun game that I heard of from my uncle. I downloaded it and learned how to play in the app. The instructions are very detailed and explain everything well. The AI is very fun to play against and challenging without being annoying.

I learned go on this app with some slight research on google game plays well for a free app. The ads dont bother me too much.

U70%

Previous version ran great. I guess auto-updates aren't such a good idea.

U70%

Game works well, good for practice, would be better with some tutorials. Adds aren't great, but are not too regular and can be skipped.

Even difficulty 1 is hard for me, but it runs well
