About Horror in the Darkness

Horror in the Darkness is a short exploration and puzzle solving adventure game inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, where players explore and investigate, putting together clues and solve puzzles to uncover the secrets of Wentsire Manor. It is a mobile phone adaption of the classic text-based adventure genre, similar to the point-and-click classics. The game combines a bleak environment and an sense of underlying dread with moments of comedy to keep you entertained.

Fresh back from the horrors of World War 2, our protagonist was working as a private investigator. Not hugely successful, but it paid the bills. Mostly. But when the widow of his old friend needed his help nothing could have prepared him for the bizarre and uncanny events that were about to unfold.

If you enjoyed this part, the adventure continues in the sequel, Horror at Innsport. Available now on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.co.karmicshift.horror2a

Amazing full text adventure. It has slightly more supernatural elements than "Horror in The Pacific", but the interface is a bit less friendly (feels like an earlier version of the latter). Also, the story is shorter, but fun anyway. The app cannot be moved to the Sdcard, and although it's not so big, it still uses more internal memory than it should.

Install the Redux version instead! It's an improved version of this game. As a result, this version should've been deleted or the other version should have been mentioned in the read more section. This game is fun & free. I'm so glad I didn't need to pay for hints, lives, etc. I'd much rather pay one fee for a game. It's very fair to play this for free & if you like it it makes sense to pay for the next game. If you're bitching about paying a couple of dollars for essentially 2 games then you shouldn't be playing any. You should be working.

I loved it! Reminded me of Zork. I will definitely be buying your second installment. Only thing that bugged me were the little ads at the top but I know you have to make money somehow. The only hint I needed was the fertilizer hint! Not bad eh? I really liked finding the secret room, finding the metal rod, and using the hammer. Also, using the butter knife was cool! Haha. It's all about the little things. Thanks for a great game!

Frustrating that any time I hit the back button on my phone by accident it takes me back to the main screen and makes me start a new game. Seems like it's probably fun but even though it says it is saving my progress I kept having to start new and finally gave up

Pretty fun, didn't actually need the hints, but I was in full detective mode. I would almost like it without the feature too, take away the temptation of cheating. Did wish it was a bit longer with more dangers and the ending did fall a little flat. I will be checking out the rest of these stories though. Reminds me almost of the old choose your scare goosebumps books I loved as a kid.

The game is really interesting! I loved playing it! The story is nice and so are the controls. But there are a few things I didnt like that much.... First of all the hints are really useless sometimes. I had to look it up on the internet to see what I had to do. And second of all.... It really sucks that you need to pay for the sequel.... I mean... I get the fact that they want to make money but couldn't they just make you pay for the hints or something? Or make you Watch an add if you wanted to use a hint? But other than those two things the game is really awesome! Really recommend it!

Brings me back to my childhood of choose your own adventure books. I loved the game, even if it was short. Not very complicated, but a good easy play. I did get stuck once. I can't wait for the sequel!

For the simplistic style, I was surprised how much I liked it. The puzzles were facil, but it was a nice adventure. I did often get confused about where I was, but there's a map. It would've helped, been cooler, and very nice if there were graphics or illustrations. Great, quick, free game!

This was a great game, letting your imagination form your surroundings by detailed descriptions is so cool(but thats exactly what a book does, i understand). Im a little bit bummed that the next game, Horror at Innsport isnt free.

Not a bad way to kill a spare hour. The story was a little spooky but not at all scary, and a bit short. A few complaints I have are that the hints give away pretty much everything, and the white text on black background hurts the eyes after a few minutes. Maybe have a sepia toned option? Over all it's enjoyable, but not amazing.

Great game. It had a fun story, was easy to get into, and hints helped when lost. I did get murdered once, but lucky the game has auto-save points. At few points I found myself sort of yelling at the game "I know I need to use that/go there but HOW?!" It was fun though.

V70%
by V####:

As described, it's basically a "point and click" mystery/adventure - except instead of seeing what's around you, you read of what's around you, and illustrate the images in your head. This isn't "new" to everyone, but it was a first for me and it was brilliant and no less entertaining than a game with visuals. An interactive storybook to say the least. I plan to download the Redux version next, and though it may seem odd to only be charged for this series sequel, "Horror At Innsport", and not the others - think of the supportive bargain you are getting for four games overall.

It's about time there's a spooky game without any jumpscares!!!! The conrol is a bit confusing at first but you get the hang of it after a few moves. A lot of other reviews said it was too short, I do agree although it's a good introduction to the sequel :)

T70%
by T####:

I think it would be cool if you added some jump scares somehow. It would be totally unexpected considering it's a text based game, and would give it more tension. But otherwise I love the classic nature of the game.

C70%
by C####:

Pretty good. Was fair in providing caution messages in areas where death could occur. A few text messages did not update when things were moved ie "knife in body" even though I took it out.

I really love this game. Its really fun and veryyy interesting. Although I got stuck in some parts. The hints are really helpful but I got stuck at (spoiler alert) the point where I found the well and went down after that, i'm completely lost. I don't know where to go. I think it was William's note(?) that said I should return the idol to the chamber in the forest but I couldn't find the chamber. I tried going around the forest but I always seem to get "death by exposure." I really need some help. Other than that, I really love this game and the music is kinda creepy making you feel the horror vibe. So yeah, I need some help. UPDATE: I SOLVED IT YAY!

C70%
by C####:

really neat little story. i do wish you could confirm hints before reading them though. i accidentally read a hint and it spoiled a section of the plot. going to download the sequel next!!

C70%
by C####:

Short and fun, though the game was a bit too linear with any meaningful branching option leading to immediate death. I also don't understand why I couldn't unlock the front door from the inside of the house.

C70%
by C####:

It seems as if I am the only person experiencing this problem but....I appear to have an incomplete map. There is no area labeled first floor landing. I cannot get to anyone's bedroom....the areas simply don't exist on my map. Did my game glitch?

K70%
by K####:

Overall really good game. My only complaints are that it was short and that there was no "fast-travel" function to places you'd already been on the map

B70%
by B####:

Nice intro story. A bit short, and the hints could be more vague, but I can see this going places. I bought the next installment; keep up the good work.

V70%
by V####:

Pretty short and somewhat anticlimactic but I'm going to consider this the first chapter and download the sequel. I love finding a text adventures on here, a game type I loved while growing up and feared had died out in the age of HD graphics. The controls were great; they helped prevent a lot of the old "trying everything to no avail" I used to have to do in the old games where you had to enter text commands. I really liked the included map too. It made it much easier to get around.

C70%
by C####:

Spooky. It was fun, only had to use a hint once but I liked that there was a hint feature. Reminded me of the old text games before graphics! Great job :)

C70%
by C####:

Excellent game for those who like text-adventure games. Not particularly scary imo, but enjoyable nonetheless. I only needed to use the in-game hints once. The map really helps and is really nice to have, as are the hints. I believe you can access them by choosing READ at the bottom of the screen. Then choose either MAP or HINTS.

I would like to thank you for taking that extra step & allowing us who are blind to enjoy the gaming world which sadly are very limited. I only suggest you put that disclaimer in the description for other sightless can be aware & join in the gameplay!

This is a great and fun story and I will be playing the sequel. However, the sequel does cost money so if you will be put off by that then be warned ✌

It's really good on how you came up with a story like that. Keep up the good work and also pls. Include the information about the person (his age, gender, and name)

Had it beat in about an hour, there really was no climax, and the ending felt lazy to me. Other than that, phenomenal, I loved it and am honestly butthurt that it was not longer than it was!

C70%
by C####:

A little short, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in the writing, which is detailed but not overboard with the descriptions. Nicely done. I look forward to seeing what happens next. :)

J70%

These are the sorts of gamebooks I've been looking for long. The writing is classy with distinct Lovecraftian flavour and the familiar unexplained horrors featured sort of gives the essence of a quick and neat short story. However, introductions would help a little bit more to delve into the situation in case of reading it first.

This was very fun. I'm a big fan of interactive stories, so it was pretty cool to play this. This is also great to have if you need to waste a little time if you have nothing to do. :)

I enjoyed this game very much so and would enjoy a sequel but not for its asking price, I'm cheap and prefer free,I've played games like this via command prompt, but I found this game to be more of a puzzle then a horror game. Kudos

It was OK and was kinda anticlimactic. The idea is creative so I can't say I didn't enjoy but a lot of things could use improvements

Spooked me out thoroughly, but it's surprisingly short. I didn't realize I was at the end when I finished the whole thing.

Reminds me of the old maniac mansion game for Commodore. W/o the pictures. Even better using imagination keeps you coming back.

C70%

This was a really fun game. Unlike many text adventures everything was logical and I never got too badly stuck. Great hints too if.you were lost!

V70%

Very short game...But well done. Since playing this game along with the next two installments, I've been trying to find other games like them but haven't had any luck.

C70%

Great game. Kept me interested, maybe add some scary music or sound effects to correspond with finding bodies or using certain items?

C70%

Just the perfect ammount of mistery and horror every text-based game needs. Great plot though short an just intriguing enough for me not to stop playing until I finished it.
