About Go GridMaster (free)

GridMaster provides a graphical user interface and artificial opponents for the game of Go (Igo, Baduk, Weiqi). It contains a full featured SGF reader/editor, a lite version of the 9x9 Olympic Champion Go program Steenvreter (it also plays larger boards), and a Go Text Protocol (GTP) interface to connect other gtp-compatible engine (more opponents can be downloaded/added). It can be used as a tool to play, study Joseki, solve Go problems, make diagrams, annotate games, etc.

If you are new to the game of Go, an introduction as well as some links to more information is included in the help.

Here's a non-exhaustive list of features:
- Full featured SGF reader/editor (perhaps the only Android app to support all properties in SGF4)
- Includes a fairly strong artificial opponent (Steenvreter lite, level configurable)
- Support for ARM and Intel cpu's
- Ability to add other bots such as GnuGo, Pachi, or your own GTP engine
- Tool for reviewing games (easy to rate moves/states, add comments, links, game info, etc.)
- Setup *any* position (including illegal ones, e.g., for demonstration purposes)
- Quickly opens large SGF files such as Kogo's Joseki Dictionary
- Supports all rectangular board sizes up to 52x52
- Tips at start-up (can be turned off)
- Accurate stone placement even on small screens
- Correct wrong input by shifting stones
- Zoom in to show only some part of the board (by pinching)
- Zoom out to show the game tree
- Fast navigation through the game tree (button push+slide action)
- Auto-replay games at configurable rate (long-click forward to start).
- Collection support (i.e., multiple game trees in one file)
- Share option
- Export to image file
- Copy-paste variations/games (also between applications as sgf text)
- Configurable rules (Chinese / Japanese)
- Configurable timing (Absolute / Canadian / Japanese / Stopwatch)
- Configurable sound for stone placement & clock
- Various graphics options (configurable in settings)
- Full screen portrait & landscape modes
- Indicate last and/or next move
- Extensive help, includes an introduction to Go
- Optional debug tab shows GTP streams (the communication between GUI and engine), rules issues, and provides option to send gtp commands manually (double-tap to pop up dialog).

P.S. Some crooks are actively manipulating the ratings, and Google provides no means for developers like me to fight it. Sure I could join the war, buy fake likes, drop fake 1-star reviews on competitors, waste money on ad campaigns, etc., but this is just a hobby for me and it should remain fun! So far all growth has been organic, and I'd really like to see it continue that way. So, if you have tried the app and like it, please give back a little and rate it 5 stars! I understand some of you may want to be more nuanced, and I do also appreciate 4-star ratings, but please notice that they don't help much; the bad guys give very low ratings, and currently even 4 stars pull the rank down, so the only real help comes from 5-star ratings and sensible review comments.

I have a problem placing stones in the game at the right spot due to the offset. Contacted the programmer and he responded promptly. It was in the setting (hard to find) next to the black stone on the bottom. Problem solved. Very good and responsive program.

I love this app. I tried to install it on my laptop (windows 10) and it said it was compatible, but I could not find the "exe" file anywhere. Is it compatible with windows 10?

Z70%
by Z####:

While it stomps me at even, I get a great game with a 9 stone handicap...and still mostly lose. That said, I love how I get my Go fix at any time on my phone. Awesome job!

T70%
by T####:

Very useful app for playing and analyzing games. Also allows to connect any GTP engine and use GTP text commands. I strongly recommend this app!

The program was the strongest go program I have ever tried. I enjoyed playing the game very much. But after I installed android 7 to the phone, the program stopped working. I hope the developer fix this problem.

Best AI for 9x9 I have seen on go apps. I am very impressed.

X70%
by X####:

Best Go app so far on the market. Great AI on 9x9, very strong, never waste sente, tenuki at the right time. But when losing...it is making funny moves. My guess for AI strength is KGS 1k-2k on 9x9. 13x13 seems a bit weaker, having trouble reading moves sometime, but still great. The best thing about this is the SGF viewer, I can just download some games from KGS and enjoy it on the phone. My suggestion is to the author is to add a kyu/dan estimate based on the phone hardware near the level slider.

Great app for viewing sgf files and playing games against a good AI.

This is the strongest AI I have seen so far.

I liked your app very much, as I want to learn Go, once I have more spare time 8-). One thing would be nice to have. An automatic zoom function, that is switchable from the settings. Playing the big board on a phone is hard to do. And zoom and de-zoom with my fingers is not so intuitive.

I have a question and Google doesn't seem to have an answer. The app supports many different engines but there doesn't seem to be a way to make them play each other, which I'd love to watch. Does the paid version have this option? Great app. But please, someone tell me, can I set engine against engine...?

X70%
by X####:

Best free go playing program I could find, beats all other free programs both on android and windows platforms. Only thing I could not find is an ability to set longer engine thinking time to increase its strength against human players.

X70%
by X####:

Fully customisable with a very strong & versatile AI engine. Even on the easiest settings will challenge you to think hard. Yes you can beat it if you're competent enough! Not an issue as in the long run will help you to develop strategies to beat it rather than giving you a false sense of security. Highly recommended!!!

Works well. I can't say much else! Thanks!

X70%

Just tired it out, and seemed to work pretty well. I was looking for something where I could just have an electronic Go board, and try things out, and this fit the bill. I've just started to play Go with one of my dad's former coworkers, and was seeking to examine the possibilities for one of the easy puzzles in the app Tsumego Pro.

I have played numerous versions and won, but the AI in this game really tests me. Great stuff from a sole developer. Thank you.

I am a long time 3kyu-ish go player. Found it's fun and challenging to play with this app, typically in 9x9. Could feel some aspects of lately seen in AlphaGo matches. Read the author's website. Great! Thank you.

uin the first minutes of review, i found only a game, i found the features in the menu of help and settings. i found pinching the game revealed the move tree. this game is the best. improvements would be: move screen markings to another move (marks on move x copied to move y) group life indicators, for those learning sente. colored markers. the features are very cool 5 stars!

The program seems quite strong for a phone app at the high setting on 9x9, I'm going to guess about 9 kyu Euro, close to being able to hold its own against me (KGS 1d) with first move/no komi. Because of the longer time per move at the high setting, I suspect I'll end up playing it mostly at a lower (faster) setting with a 2 stone handicap. That beats the hell out of GoFree, which on 9x9 needs 4 stones against me, IOW not such an interesting game even if it is reasonably hard to win. I'll probably try the bigger board sizes once to see how it does, but 9x9 is pretty much all I'd play on a phone anyway. The user interface could be more intuitive, but that's just a matter of taking the time to figure it out. Thanks so much for making this available, Erik!
