It's a very straight-forward roleplaying game with the familiar tale of a boy who befriends a dragon and their journey brings them into a confrontation with an evil empire. (However, there is a slight twist regarding the true villain of the story!) Of course, along the way, our heroes are joined by strangers who become valuable allies that assist them in their battle. The only gimmick Dragon Tear has is an equipment growth system where weapons and armor will increase in strength as your characters attack or get attacked. The growth rate, which can be quick or slow, determines how fast equipment will reach their max potential. The rate also affects the selling price as well-worn armor and weapons will sell for more. The gameplay itself is reminiscent of old NES classics like Dragon Warrior such as the turn-based battles in first person view. However, there are no battles on the overworld map as all villages and dungeons are marked as points and you simply choose where to move.
