日本にある４つの公営競技の１つです。（あと３つは競馬・競輪・オートレース）

■誰が運営しているの？
モーターボート競走法に基づいてボートレース場のある自治体によって運営されています。

■ボートレース場ってどこにあるの？
全国に２４場あります。
（群馬、埼玉、東京、静岡、愛知、三重、福井、滋賀、大阪、兵庫、徳島、香川、岡山、広島、山口、福岡、佐賀、長崎）

■他の国にもあるの？
日本独自のものでしたが、2002年から韓国の美沙里でも行われています。

■どんなレース？
１周６００Ｍの水面を、白・黒・赤・青・黄・緑の６艇で左回りに３周するレースです。

■どんなレースがあるの？
レースには一般戦・ＧⅢ・ＧⅡ・ＧⅠ・ＳＧの５つのグレードがあって、ＳＧが最高峰です。
グレードが高いほど賞金が高く、年末に行われる賞金王決定戦（グランプリ）の優勝賞金は、なんと１億円です！

■レースのしくみは？
１つのレース（競走）は、だいたい６日間約５０名で行われます。１～４日目に予選を行い、そのうち上位１８名が、５日目の準優勝戦に出場できます。準優勝戦で１着２着の選手が、６日目の優勝戦に出場できます。

■どのボートに乗るか、どうやって決めるの？
ボートは、ボート・モーター・プロペラの３つで構成されています。
これらはボートレース場備え付けのものを使うので、公平性を保つために競走の前日に抽選を行います。
抽選で当たったボートを、レーサー自身でペラ・モーター整備を行ったり試運転をしたりして調整します。

■独特なスタートって？
スタートラインに一直線に並んでヨーイドン！というスタートではありません。決められた時間内にスタートラインを通過するというフライングスタート方式です。早すぎると「フライング」で失格になります。
