Simple checkers go one square diagonally forward and can beat only forward. A king goes one square diagonally both forward and back, it can beat to any side, but only over a cell. Beating is a must. In case when there are several ways, the player can choose any of them, not necessarily the one which is longer, but he must pass through it.
