Crosswords for Android
This is an app I've loved loads, for a long time, it's got a great ui for selecting clues - 'it just works'.
Looks like they fixed the bug recently. Back to a five star app!
Used to be my favorite, but now after the OS update or whatever it's called, I can't play anymore. Loss of touch sensitivity. I hate updates, they are stupid and they are forced upon us. I hope Stand Alone, Inc. is able to fix this, though :(
The app on my android device has also stopped working. Hope this will be fixed soon so I can still get my Crossword fix. Why do updates always cause more problems then they solve?
Touch screen is messed up after most recent update. Can't select specific squares or clues. Makes it impossible to play.
As of September 6 2017, taps no longer select the square being tapped - they select some other random square instead, sometimes changing the direction of the answer.
Touch puts cursor in wrong place. Fix it! Unusable!
Touch is messed up. Can't select squares I want..
Completely f**ked up after last update! Want my money back!
Touch calibration is broken.
Don't bother paying or downloading. I bought it, sources have disappeared and now I can't reinstall it.
The only reason I purchased this app (twice in fact, once on iOS) was to play the NYT. Now that source is no longer available, the app is sadly of no use to me. Uninstalling.
No New York Times.
What happened to the NYT? Having to use more than one app for crosswords sucks, and this was better than NYT's app anyway!
I like the New York puzzle too. You need to get permission to put those back. I even paid a while back for some and I never received them.
Unquestionably the best interface across multiple platforms. This is the ideal Crossword app.
Standalone Crosswords has the best solving interface of any Android crossword app I've found. It packs a lot of info into a small space (including showing both clues for a square, though you can turn this off if you want) and has a lot of little subtle touches like moving between squares by sliding your finger across the clue area. The downloading and other puzzle organizing features are a little wonky but they work. Unfortunately the NYT has recently cut their paying customers off from direct integration with this app to force their customers onto their own crappy app and hide from them the fact that there are other good crosswords in the world. I encourage upset users of this app to give the NYT app the 1 star rating that this new policy has earned them.
If I can't download NYT puzzles, what's the point of using this app? I'll be getting my puzzles elsewhere going forward!
Get back the NY Times puzzles - that's the only reason I use the app. Your app interface is fantastic, the one for NY Times is very poorly designed. But again, without the NY Times puzzles, I'm ot inclined to use this app either. Thank you!
Any update on support for NYT?
Great crossword app that downloads various daily crosswords. Still being maintained, and as far as I'm aware it's the only Android app you can use to play The Daily Telegraph (UK) cryptic crossword on (with subscription to the paper's puzzle sure).
The app is broken. I contacted the devs. First response had nothing to do with Android version which they only admitted about after 6 months. The issue is that the app will NOT update the puzzles unless you're IN the list of puzzles page. The iPhone version does actually update puzzles every 6 hours as indicated in the settings. This setting is useless even if set to update puzzles automatically in Android. The dev seems to think that explaining some technical functionality would make it obfuscated enough to make me stop asking. If it works one way in iPhone why can't it work the same way in Android? Answer, because it's too much work apparently. Otherwise, the program is a crossword program. Just know, on Android you have enough to be on the list of puzzles to update the list of them. Doesn't do it automatically even if set to do so.
In the past two weeks it has stopped downloading NY Times crosswords on both devices.
New York Times puzzle download stopped working around 5/16/2017.
New York Times no longer downloads or updates because of authentication problems.
Used to be my fave app, won't install on my new phone????
I bought this YEARS ago and it's still being issued and new puzzles are continuously added every day. The few times I had issues the dev contacted me directly I wish I could say that about more apps.
I'd like to give this app 5 stars but it stops working and loses your progress too much. Apparently it's something that can't be fixed as it's been like this for a long time. Too bad really as it is the best looking of the crossword apps.
The puzzles are fun, and I need my daily crossword fix -- but with sync dead, I have to download from different puzzle providers on my phone than on my tablet.
If my phone goes to sleep I lose any progress in the current game. Makes me so mad I won't play the game anymore...
I have enjoyed this for many years. However, it does not work on my Samsung Note 8.
I had the paid version on IOS and loved it. I paid for the Android version and am VERY disappointed in the selection of puzzles. All I can ever download are simple or quick puzzles, make an occasional moderate. The app needs more challenging puzzles! Those incomprehensible British puzzles don't count! UPDATE: I contacted customer support and they told me how to get back puzzle suppliers that had more challenging puzzles. Turns out it was my own error :-( . I have all of my good suppliers back and I'm a happy camper. I'm upping my review to 5 stars
Recent updates have killed the ability to download NY Times daily puzzles in the Android version of the app. If I download a puzzle with my browser and try to open it using the "load from file" option, the screen goes blank and app locks up. If I try to open a puzzle by clicking on the file in the Downloads folder, the system says I have no app that can open a puz file and takes me to the Play Store. If I try to download a puzzle using the "browse the web" feature, nothing happens when the download button is pressed. Browser remains on the NY Times page and the puzzle is not downloaded to my android device. Wish this would work like the IOS version.
App is decent, but has two issues: 1) the list of providers is smaller every year, and 2) there's nothing to mitigate cheating, so many puzzles have obvious cheaters that regularly take the top spot(s) on the leaderboards. Really frustrating, to be honest.
I made bad words in an earlier review. I now eat my words. These guys really take care of their app. My favorite crossword ( and only) game!
Ignore the complaints. They had a bad update, but fixed it in less than a day. Been using this for years, and they are the most responsive developer in this store. Way better than the new NYT app for doing the NYT puzzle.
this is my favorite crossword puzzle app that i've ever used! the last update really messed with touch calibration on puzzles though, hopefully that can be easily fixed ????
Been using for years, definitely the best crossword app I've tried. It's a shame it comes up so low in Play Store search rankings. Would be five stars if simple instructions like entering multiple letters in a square were contained in app help.
With the last upgrade, the curse is very slow to move and completed squares are not skipped. It is very annoying.

Had it on my iPhone, had to get it on my new droid. Very, very few problems overall in the last couple of years. Edit: 9/10/17 New update fixes touch issue.
