DRAGON QUEST VIII for Android
This is an update to my original post. Loved the game but it just updated and deleted all of my data. I had just made it to the black citidale and now I must start all over. I don't think so. Sucks because I've been playing this game for months. Would have got 5 stars if voice overs worked. The no screen rotation bothered me at first but I got used to it rather quickly but the lack of voiceover speech really takes away from an other wise great game. Having to read everything makes it difficult to really get into the story and the way the characters talk make it difficult to read. Keep the ports coming though just find a way to get speech integrated. Love it
For starters, I paid in full $59.99 (maybe more), back when this was first released on PS2. Worked at Funcoland if anyone remembers that place; bought it the day of its release. That aside, it's an excellent JRPG with old-school game mechanics that made Dragon Warrior the series it is today. This polished gem, while updated for the mobile platform, includes everything the original PS2 version had, minus the voice overs. Being the completionist I am, I'm only half way through, at almost 70 hours of game play. Between the Alchemy mechanic and Monster Arena, there's plenty to keep you busy, all the while, leveling your party to gain an boost, being overpowered for the main story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ PLEASE SQUARE-ENIX, GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT! THE VOICE ACTING/OVERS PLEASE!! DEVELOPMENT ISN'T FINISHED YET! *cough* Maybe a landscape-orientated Guide too...expand into an updated game with controller support...you already have cloud support..that additionally roped in life long fans such as my self, but I want more!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Because I love this game, I went as far as to download and organize maps, pictures, FAQs, strategy guides, walkthroughs...all with Google Drive, add a shortcut to that folder, with each of my devices, so I can instantly pick up and continue where I left off while using visual aids....an added, permanent, plus to accompany the game. (there's other stuff you can do with BLUESTACKS)
When, if possible, will we get the voice acting as it is on the PlayStation 2 American version? This will truly complete the game in my opinion.
No controller support, screen will not rotate, really leggy, needs to be connected to the internet all the time.
Loading to infinity and beyond isn't what you'd expect from S.E. not even starting the game just stuck in the loading screen
Finished it on ps2 years ago. It's 100% the same, perfect turn based fights. Great story line. Casinos. Monster arena. Good few weeks of great fun.
The controls are horrible, especially with the camera but the game is pretty good. Wish this was landscape and had controller support
Can't even get into the damned game pissed that I spent money on it
Love this game. Just wish They had Voices.
The game keep hanging at "loading Data" screen since it was updated to Version 1.1.4
Really am missing the voices in this.
One of the greatest games of all time brought to mobile...heck yes
I never played the original, so the missing voice acting is fine with me because i don't know what I'm missing. seems like they could offer an in app download for those that want voice acting and have space for it and those that want to save space don't have to download it. Glad they offer to save your game to the cloud but it would be nice if it was automatic. Needs landscape mode and gamepad support so we can play it on Android TV.
Memories of missed placed youth. If you love old school JRPGs then this the game for you. Dragon Quests are the best. Played and beat the Ps2. This is a very good port. It sucks that the voices are missing (lost part of the atmosphere) but a portable classic what more do you want. Game looks good. Camera placement is a little uneven but game is still very playable. Battles load quicker than PS2 so a big plus and can set up tactics to speed up battles. Should have bought it when it was released...don't wait start wasting your youth today.
I have played countless android RPG games, and this one is the best among others. Fascinating story, realistic graphics, hilarious dialogue and diverse systems are the praiseworthy features which contribute to this high rating. The only complaint I can possibky make is that the game takes a long time to load. But apart from that, awesome!
I love Dragon Quest 8 but the PlayStation 2 version. This game is almost unplayable because of the controls . The graphics are fine but the controls are terrible they made the game a slog to play. It was a bad decision on Sony's part to make this game in portrait mode instead of landscape like the game was originally made. Using the touch screen can make even small interactions a headache. I would have had far fewer problems if they had just included controller support.
Took them forever, but they finally fixed the cloud download issue. Not quite as good as the ps2 version, with the no voice acting, but it was a small sacrifice to make to get the full experience on your phone! Probably not worth the full price anymore though, with the 3DS version comming out soon.
Great game. I love how seamlessly it was transfered from PS2, but I can not save to the cloud anymore. I am about to get a tablet and would like to transfer the game from my phone to my tablet but I will loose over 100 hours of play and more than 40 levels if I do. Please fix cloud save.
The idea of this game port is fantastic but the main problem I think is the cloud save and in this day and age we need cloud saves for when phones are upgraded. I tried uploading my save to the cloud and a message bubble pops up saying that play services crashes every time. After that it just stays on the loading screen forever.
Litteraly is my childhood all over again!.. This us brilliant! I miss the voice acting a bit. Especially when Jessica dies and shouts "Alister!!" But hey, this is so allowing me to relive my childhood on a platform that I use so frequently!.. Highly recommended to everyone willing to spend this much! :)
First is the lack of VO. But that has more to do with filesize than anything else. The other has to do with Google family. I feel like I am being punished for buying this early because it is not available to share on my family account.
Doesn't make it past the initial slime loading screen Nextbook Ares 8. Used to work and even tried reinstall and clearing data and cache no luck. Update: Still not working
DQ8 on ps2 was great, this game encapsulates most of that. The cut voice acting and forced portrait view, however, are poor port choices. -2 stars. They DID add auto-run though! Edit: -1 more star, cloud save is broken. Edit 2: - 1 more star, no BT controller support.
I've played this game on ps2 but never finished it because life got busy. Now I can take it on the go!!! I wish it had the voices, they add quite a lot to the characters. I also wish I could play in landscape mode, having a hard time adjusting to the narrow screen. Won't stop me from playing though. Back to the game:)
Played this game a while back and saved to cloud, but now trying to load saved data keeps giving me "failed to synchronize data, check connection." My Wi-Fi is fine. With the frame rate and interactive sacrifices, this issue is unacceptable for the price.
Paid £14.99 for this game as i loved it on the ps2. Installed it and all i get is the loading screen. Huge waste of money. Time to advise everyone on facebook to avoid this company like the plague. Save your money and dont download
It will not go past the loading screen, just like everyone else who actually bought the game. This is a scam, will not respond to my email or refund. Do not waste your money!
Reviews are correct, the software-locked frame rate is really horrible! While you can still slug through the game, it feels laggy as hell (regardless of hardware). I'm playing on a Sony Xperia Z5 Octa-core. Do your research before purchase; $22 is a bit steep for what feels like you're playing on a bad emulator. Dragon Quest VIII however is still a brilliant/amazing game and the fact it is now portable is nice.
Runs perfect on my Samsung galaxy s5. But this game is so frustrating for me, the map doesn't help to much it's so blurry i hate it. i spent a lot time walking on the places trying to find the objective . it doesn't even have the names of the places that I have been. And every time my group dies I loose Most of the money that I have been collecting. I will like a mini map like the one from chaos rings .
The same Dragon Quest but the controls this sucks so bad they literally ruin the game for that reason alone $5 is too much for this piece of crap they're that bad
I have a high performance gaming tablet, a nice phone and this game doesn't seem to go above 15 or 20 frames per second. It's too bad because they got a lot right. For instance they fixed the horrible menu and prattle that you had to go through in the church. Controls are okay but are in serious need of an upgrade. The joystick is locked to the middle of the screen for me so I can't use my thumb at the bottom corner of the screen like I want. I better be able to get a refund, unacceptable and unplayable.
Great game! Only thing missing is the voice over. Help! I just made it to Pickham and i cant figure out how to trigger the horse thief scene. I've tried talking to every character in town.
"Failed to synchronize data, please check your signal and data usage, and try again." I overlooked the fact that it's missing the voiceovers wish it was at least optional, but I had to reset my phone and when I got the app downloaded again, it won't let me cloud sync my save game. says check data package (I have unlimited) and Wi-Fi. I'm going to stop playing if I have to start over again. If they can get my save back will be 5 stars again. I'm just like to add that there's no customer support whatsoever
For those who don't know the Dragon Quest series, it is a well-established RPG series dating back to the days of the NES, known then as "Dragon Warrior". This game is miles ahead of any other RPG currently on Android. - Price - The $20 price tag is there for a reason. If you're hesitant about the price, do a little research. This is a highly revered title from the days of the PlayStation 2, and plenty of reviews and footage are available for you to peruse. - No Controller Support - I understand tha
That bug I found is screwing with other items as well. I'm getting tired of having to buy all these alchemy ingredients only to learn that when I finish buying them I'm only gonna get a fraction of what I'm supposed to get after selling the final product.
This plays great on my Samsung Note 3 but shows as incompatible with my new Asus Memo pad LTE (Intel). Update: Great on my LG Gpad X 10.1 and Galaxy S6 Active!
Definitely a keeper. I love this game. Beautiful graphics. Its great to play a 3D DQ game on your phone. My only complaint is that the cloud save doesnt work for me. I tried to solve it with Square Enix customer service (who told me it was Google Cloud's fault) and later with Google Cloud (who told me it was the app's fault). An annoyance since its a 80+ hour game and I cant sync to the cloud, so I might loose my progress at some point.
Can't say enough good things about this game! The only drawbacks are the limitations of porting the console controls to touch-screen, which they did well considering. And the lack of the well-received English voice acting from the original. Otherwise a perfect, even slightly better version of the classic!
It doesn't load, it just shows the slime loading screen for ages and won't turn on. PLEASE HELP! UPADTE: still doesn't work

This was one of my absolute favorites growing up. They did a wonderful job overall, but 2 things really take away from the game. No voices or rotation. I could handle no rotation but, PLEASE make an optional download for the voice overs so people like myself who are willing to sacrifice storage on our phones so we can enjoy the game in its full glory. Plus I think you'd see the sales for this skyrocket if you would. THANK YOU for fixing the clouds saves. Huge relief.
