Avernum: Escape From the Pit is an epic, indie fantasy role-playing adventure. It is optimized for Android tablets and features an enormous world, a fascinating story, and 30+ hours of gameplay. Avernum is the first chapter in an epic tale, the story of imprisonment, rebellion, and the struggle for freedom against overwhelming odds.

Avernum: Escape From the Pit features:

* Epic fantasy adventure in an enormous underworld.
* Huge outdoors and eighty towns and dungeons.
* Three separate game-winning quests. Seek safety, escape or revenge. Do just one of them or all three!
* Unique races and settings make Avernum different from any adventure out there.
* Dozens of side quests and hundreds of magical artifacts.
* Rich game system with over 50 spells and battle disciplines and a multitude of beneficial character traits to choose from.

The Story:

You have been banished to the underworld, never to see the light of day again.

The surface is ruled by the cruel Emperor Hawthorne, master of the Empire. All of the known lands are subject to his brutal command. Everyone who speaks out, who misbehaves, who doesn’t fit in is cast into the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, far below the surface. There, you are expected to die, a victim of starvation, horrible monsters, or simple despair.

But not all of the Avernites have surrendered. With magic and steel, they are forging a new nation deep underground. You can join them and fight for safety. Or freedom. Or even, if you dare, revenge on the surface-worlders who tried to destroy you.

Not playable on a 7 inch screen. Game is well reviewed but not doable on less than a full sized tab

Oh, I love it...

Although not ported to Android by Jeff's own hand, this remake of the original Avernum stands as an 'old-school' classic alongside his entire Geneforge series. If the UI is too small initially to be useful, switch on magnification on your tablet and use a stylus for an easier time of it. Recommended!

by G####:

The combat and leveling seems solid, along with the other gameplay elements in general. My only complaint is the UI on my nexus 7 is incredibly small. There has been an update to fix it, though it doesn't seem to make any difference. Unfortunately this is almost a deal breaker, as a lot of this game is reliant on reading stats and dialogue in general. If the UI was scaled to look good on a 7 inch tablet, I'd be incredibly jazzed. I will continue to update the rating/review with updates to the game.

Like another user mentioned the hit targets are so small it's very difficult to play. Lots of potential but I spent 5 minutes just trying to level my attributes because I couldn't hit the tiny + button

Not allowing me to pick beast races. Computer based one does. Lacking in choice.

Straight from the PC version I grew up playing. A few issues, such as AI, bugs and a small lack of direction keep the game from being polished. Otherwise, great game!

Great game! Lot of effort went into the story. Good humor too.

Loved it at first but it just keeps crashing since the last android update. Please update the game so I can play again

I've been playing their games since 1997. The game is really thought out and in depth. It is just as good as many of the other games from the big name companies. I can't wait for Avernum 2: Crystal Souls to be released on mobile platforms.

Avernum is a great "Old School" western style RPG - quests are plenty, and you have the freedom to go anywhere you want in a very large and interesting world. The Android port has quite a few UI problems though: text is very small (on my nexus 7), and I have to be careful to make sure I pick the right dialogue option. A confirmation button would be great here. Countless times I have pressed on the wrong square and sent my characters the wrong way in combat. A few times, the enemy would be in an unclickable location behind a wall or slope. Also, there are a few game-destroying bugs - for example, it is possible to get your save corrupted, losing the contents of chests in the dungeon/city maps of the region you are currently in. It is important to keep multiple saves if this happens to your game. This game would easily be a 5 if it were not for the bugs and UI problems.

Great game, little hard to see UI. May be better to play on PC.

I'm going to divide this review into different sections (sectionize?) to make it easy to read and stuff. COMBAT: Lots of strategy. I tested this by fighting strategically, reloading and rushing into combat. Fighting strategically left my characters unscathed, and rushing into combat killed 2 of my characters. Not much weapon diversity though, weapon progression is a straight line. That might change. STORY: Great, believable story and characters. Motives behind actions are often explained. GAMEPLAY: Lots of exploration to do. In the 3 hours I've played I have moved through about 1/5 of the map and discovered probably none of the secrets.

Great game. It stopped working after android 5.0 update

U70%

Plenty of loot, excellent turn based tactical monster battling, awesome character skill trees, free roaming exploration. 30 + hours of gameplay? That's a good one, lol. You're gonna spend 30 hours outfitting your characters and scoping your inventory with all the cool stuff there is! Buy this game now, that's my recommendation.

Thoroughly enjoying it. Quirky and idiosyncratic, but in a good way. :) Many thanks for the Android port.

This is a great game, rendered unplayable by a game killing bug. Several hours in and all containers suddenly appear empty. Going back to an old save is the only way to fix, but it immediately reoccurs when entering key areas. Forced to restart from scratch. This is a known bug in previous versions of this game and still exists in this one - very disappointing. Restarted from scratch. 8 hours in the bug reoccurred.

It's a great indie game, a little pricey for what it is, but happy to support indie developers. Would give 5 stars if: firstly, you sort out the small controls thing already!, and secondly it crashes on my nexus 7 every. single. time. I try to reopen the game when it's already running. Frustrating.

H70%
by H####:

awesome....better once i started googling how to finish.:) and tips etc. BUT there is an annoying bug, where it can loose all items in the game. seems to happen with events that try to add an item to a full backpack. aside from this, which can be avoided [once you realise the issue], its great

Runs a tad slow on my nexus 7, otherwise it's great. Exile III was my favourite, I can't wait for it!

I love every game they've made. Glad they finally ported Avernum to android. Wish they could or would port Geneforge. Can't wait for Avadon 2. Dropped a star UI is far too small when leveling. Was bad enough to merit a drop.

Good game for RPG fans. So far so good. Started with a couple of problems. If you have a toolbar at the bottom of your tablet that is displayed, get rid of it before opening the game as it distorts the graphics. The game plays fine after that. Now love the game cannot put it down.

U70%
by U####:

..just needs the magnification gestures-setting enabled on 7" tablets, because the UI scale is quite small.

A70%
by A####:

It is now not opening when I attempt to play. I feel a bit ripped off.

U70%
by U####:

I just wish there was a way to rescale the UI :'(

U70%
by U####:

The UI needs to be scaled up for the 7" + tablets, especially when you level up, touching the little + and - is a bit hard. This is probably the best RPG i've played in a long long time, I sat and played only about an hour and it's a proper old-school RPG with some new stuff mixed in there. When the UI issues are fixed it should be golden and will get a 5-star review from myself. No performance issues here on Nexus 7 (AOKP ROM). Fix UI issues please.

Best classic-style RPG on android by a long way. Only hesitation on five stars are the *tiny* hot spots on a 7-inch screen. Still play and love it though.

INCREDIBLE GAME!!! ... But how do I kill King Hawthorn?

I have been a huge fan of spiderweb software for over a decade. This is an awesome port to the Android platform. The UI is a little small, so it wouldn't be all that great for a phone. Also, I would love to be able to zoom in and out. Even with these little complaints I gladly paid $10 for this game. I know for a fact I have hours of entertainment ahead of me.

Does not work on my Nvidia Shield Tablet, just goes to black screen and jumps out to the homescreen, tried contacting the developer to no avail

U70%

Spider software always brings that true classic gaming, I own all of the geneforges and avadon but none of the avernums yet so I'm happy to finnaly get it on the go!

Z70%

An engaging story line, in depth character creation/customization with beautiful 2D/3D style graphics. Performs well on my Asus Infinity Prime but does require further optimization for 10 inch tablets e.g. larger text/menu icons. Game play is solid and very rewarding. I will continue to support Spiderweb software so long as they keep making games for android. Try the demo first to see if it runs on your device before purchasing.

R70%

Spiderweb has done it again! This remake of Exile is done well to show off the new engine and it is spectacular. Lots of flavor text and back story and an exceptional story take you for a wild adventure. The only downside is that with all the reading the UI is a bit small on a 7in or bigger tablet, and will lead to forced shorter game sessions due to eye strain. And that is sad because this is a story you won't want to put down.

Z70%
by Z####:

Great game, as always, but halfway through got the 'empty chest' bug and haven't realized it till all my old saves were written over... After the hours I put in, it was a real bummer :/

So happy to finally see another Spiderweb Software title on android. The most in depth turn based rpg's available on android. Well worth the money. Any current fans of these devs or simply deep rpg's in general should support these guys so we can get more of their great games! :-)

Z70%
by Z####:

I have this game on PC and now on my nexus 7. Great rpg game. I believe it's a remake of the old 'Exiled' games. So I'm really looking forward to the sequels. My only gripe is the small interface, it's near impossible to click the little +/- signs when levelling and it's easy to click the wrong dialogue option. If the developers could add a zoom feature to zoom in on the interface then I would give 5 stars. It's so annoying that I can only give 3 stars. Otherwise, this game is one of the best on Android!
