Shredder Chess for Android
I love the simplicity of the app. I've tried a host of other apps, but none runs as easily as Shredder. The engine adjusts according to your strength level. If you don't have time for a full game, go try out the puzzles; I have killed time this way in various settings (like standing 15mins in a long queue). Two inshusiatic thumps up!
Buyer be aware. This product is probably abandoned. Although still a great purchase I can't recommend it for anyone to purchase simply because it never gets any updates. Such a shame to see this once great chess software being neglected.
Last update was Nov 2016. Engine a bit weak compared to other free chess engines. Had it play 5 games against Droidfish, both at maximum strength. Shredder did not win a single game. :(
Great app -- lovely graphics. One annoyance, when doing puzzles: if you wish to continue playing after solving the problem, it forces you to switch sides. Default should be that you continue to play white if that's what you were playing in the exercise. (The board automatically flips as well, which is irritating.) Otherwise brilliant.
Amazing game over all. I was beating it and it knew I would win so it told me that it wanted to resign and if I would accept or keep playing, I believe this is a great feature. Strong AI too.
Setup board does not work. When you analyze, it suggests non sensical moves. Usually illegal moves
Awful implementation hopefully you don't get a chance to see what a great job they did on the iOS version and what a hack job the slapped onto the Android platform.
Awesome app. You will have everything in this app you expect as a chess player. Only thing which I miss is online gaming. Otherwise it's a must have chess app.
This is one of the best chess games out there. A must have for your Android! The AI is very intuitive and very tough to beat on higher settings. A great teacher for chess students.
There must have been a couple of dozen ways to adjust playing strength. The sliding adjuster is virtually imposible to control with any precision. Also, when playing out a tactics variation, if you allow the screen to rotate, you lose all the moves & have to start all over.
Strong engine. Good features. Inexpensive. Don't waste your time on free crap. You'll get a weak engine, few features and obnoxious ads. They are little more than Trojan horses to sell you violent video games. This is a good choice for someone looking for a serious and effective chess improvement tool.
I have ever played against. Most top out at around 1800 - 2000, but this one is still whooping butt at that level. I actually have it around 2250 and win only half the time. Definitely worth the time to play
It's missing the option to start as a random color, but the self-adjusting difficulty more than makes up for that. The most annoying thing about other chess apps for me was trying to tweak the difficulty to keep at a 50-50 win rate.
Last software update for this application was almost two year ago. The developer should consider adding new features atleast once in a year. Examples of new features and additions include adding more puzzles, chess training materials, etc
Defiantly a good chess program, the opponent ai is quite good. My only complaint is with the "coach", it seems to be completely focused on material instead of position and tactics. I will often sacrifice a piece to gain position, often to start a guaranteed mate in 2 or 3 and the coach will tell me it's a bad move, that I should take back.
People saying it need ui update. I dont think so. Material design where all apps look a like. Big plus icon in the corner. Nope ill take this UI any day.
Bought this app but what surprises me is that it's not been updated since 2014. I guess the publishers need to consider that customers do expect some service for what they pay.
For humans this monster will crush most players. Would love to see the multi core version of Shredder for us Computer chess enthusiasts. Update please.
I had KNB v KB and offered draw and Shredder declined?!? With KB a draw is best theoretical result against any play! 4 star only because shredder is obviously good, but fix!
This is the first app that I have bought. Many other chess programs have better UIs but Shredder works as advertised. No fancy and fluffy stuff, just simple and honest to God chess goodness.
When game is about to lose it uses perpetual check to force a three fold repetition draw - this is breaking the official rules of chess. ------ALSO game can castle even if you have one of your pieces aimed between its king and rook - BUT I cannot castle when in same situation. (like this for years but developer too lazy to fix)
don't listen to them. material bs isn't all its cracked up to be. a classic game with classic design. not a bunch of extra stuff you dont need
it is the highest paid chess app but it is behind the competition! it needs GUI overhaul and ability to add chess engines and conduct chess engine tournament!!! only then I will give it 5 stars!!!!!! thank you in advance!
best chess app I have ever used and I love how at different ratings it actually throws in typical human mistakes for that rating its not like a computer its like playing a person
This has been by far the most satisfying chess program/app I've ever used. Strength of this program is phenomenal with a myriad of options for players from beginner to master level. Keep updates coming!
As you win or lose Shredder adjusts its rating and yours too. Coincidently this is near my USCF rating.
Good app but While playing you cannot listen to spotify without the music lagging and stopping for half a second EACH MOVE. Very annoying

Great chess app with many options. * Please fix the highlighted chess piece box on the chessboard so there is an option to remove the highlighted piece, it's distracting.
I've found the AI to be almost perfectly adaptive, always seemingly keeping pace and providing to be a tough but well matched opponent as my skill level gradually increases. I would however love to see the rating system utilised in a pvp matchmaker style gaming mode.
Unfairly criticized on here. Great gui. Easy to use and work with. Great features. Love the tatical puzzles. You could download this app and never need to use another program. It has everything you could ever want. If you wack it up to 2600 elo and play 1 minute chess you can win on time with anti computer tactics and the engines horizon effect. However go to settings and click option for full strength and you will see why Shredder is the undisputed king of speed chess. A super GM in you hand. Enjoy
Great chess game. You get 5 stars because has landscape mode in tablets. Also a nice feature would be computer vs computer with independent adjustable strenght for each side, that would be excellent for learning. Good job!!!
Pls dont buy this app.I have been cheated. I paid and got this nonsense app.
Ai is terrible. First game mated 1400 ai rather easily, second game tried 1100 for comparison and it played much stronger. Makes no sense...
Last software update for this application was an year ago. In competitive world like today it ought to be updated regularly
It used to be my favourite chess game but not anymore. It does not work anymore on my Oneplus one with Android 5.1. It keeps crashing the moment I open it.
I like its playing style. Unlike other boring chess programs this one makes human like mistakes but still playing strong. I think only missing feature is online play with other real players. Hope that it comes with future versions.
A good app. Prior to the latest update ran smoothly, but since the update crashes frequently.
Very good regularly takes games off my Tasc R 30 which up until the release of the Revelation chess computer was the strongest dedicated chess program in the world

It plays too mechanical. Chessmaster had personalities to balance out play. Shredder chess has one - Grandmaster. The difficulty setting only adjusts the frequency of mistakes and doesn't seem accurate to actual ranks. Also, taking back a move breaks this difficulty mechanic as it will suddenly make a lot more mistakes. Other than that what it does get right, it does in spades!
