About Cell Lab: Evolution Sandbox

WARNING: Cell Lab is a very challenging game that requires lots of thinking and experimenting. Reading the instructions will be necessary. If you enjoy difficult simulation puzzles then this is for you.

Cell Lab simulates few-celled organisms. It contains 45 challenges where the player is presented with an environment and has to design an organism that will survive in it. Solving challenges unlocks additional genes that can give cells new properties.

The encoding of the cells behaviour has been made as intuitive as possible without losing generality but it nevertheless takes a bit of effort to understand. Going through the provided tutorials carefully is recommended.

Cell Lab also contains an experimental mode where the user can set the parameters of the environment and put designed organisms in it to see how they multiply (or die). It is also possible to seed this environment with random genomes and once a viable genome has been seeded one can see how it slowly evolves through tiny mutations to an organism well adapted to the environment it is in.

It is then possible to change the environment to see how they re-adapt, fast forward the simulation, and finally to save and share it.

This simulation is not biologically realistic, all cells in Cell Lab only has one function, to swim, to eat, to collect sunlight, to float, etc . This is not how cells work in nature where one cell can do many things at once. This accuracy has been traded off to be able to make an interesting game. The cells have also been made to multiply very fast, this also for the enjoyment of the user.

What is realistic is the evolution taking place in this game. How species adapt to their environment and compete with each other to sometimes attain an equilibrium and sometimes extinction.

Features:
• 4 tutorials
• 45 challenges
• 16 types of cells with different functions
• 20 cell-modes per genome to program
• 22+ parameters in each cell mode
• Environment editor with 27 parameters
• Simulates and renders up to 1000 cells at decent frame rates
• Arbitrary number of cells and petri dish size in advanced mode
• Beautifully animated vector graphics that lets you zoom to atomic scales
• Save, load and share both environments and genomes
• Simulation fast-forward and slow-motion
• No advertisements or in-game payments

I am lucky to have found this game! It is a wet dream for anybody majoring in any biological science. The game allows you to engineer genomes to achieve a goal, or for your own experiments for fun. It may take a little time to learn the game's way of engineering genomes, but once fluidity amongst the controls is achieved, their are seemingly endless possibilities! The game is rather realistic in its portrayal of the diversity of physical and behavioural attributes of different cells. The game is well done!

I love the concept and the art. My only gripe with the game is the lack of detail into each of the cell types. There would be a big benefit in having a localized database with more info and some examples; bonus points if this can be accessed from within the game. As of this review, I have yet to beat all the challenges, but I am having a good time trying. Looking forward to a sequel!

It's a shame to see its rating to be pulled down by people that have no explored the game enough and complain about lack of certain features, despite said features already being in the game. This game is amazing and definitely deserves more love. It's potential as an evolution simulator can definitely be fully realised on more powerful machines (*cough* PCs *cough*) Hope to get even cooler updates!

A unique-ish game of logic, creativity and cellular biology, Cell Lab is truly a sandbox game. Your goal is to create cells adapted to the specific environmental conditions, presented in each level. All the tools you need are right there in front of you (and everything is explained in great detail), but the game is hard even so. Think, imagine solution, try it out. experiment, and with enough trial-and-error you'll solve it. Probably.

I loved every minute of this game. It's such a meaty game to bite down on. The mechanics can be intimidating, especially when you get in to complex concepts like Virocytes and Neurocytes, but the leading curve was stellar and I never felt frustrated, despite the detailed systems I was working with. Once I was on, it was pure creativity and experimentation for hours. No obtrusive ads, no cloying "PLEASE RATE ME" to break the flow, it's wonderful. This game poses a serious hazard to your productivity.

I thought this was gona be a science based game with a large learning curve... not that that's bad but I didn't have time for that. I finally resides to give the game a go and not am I glad I did! This is a sandbox game, puzzle game, learning game... and to too it off, for how it discribes itself the learning curve is small.. and the tutorials are broken down and spread appart so your not done learning the game till your done with the game. This game is better than what it shows it to be on the playstore...

Best thing ever. This needs to get off the damn phone into Steam. Seriously. While there might be lots of small improvements to the interface that could make this better, the quality is already head and shoulders above anything I've seen on Android. I'm seriously considering installing an Android emulator to not have to fiddle with my phone to play this.

I really enjoyed this game and am very happy I found something that encompasses my interests so well. The difficulty scales well and you will be constantly engaged once you've passed the learning curve (which, really, isn't too bad). I still haven't finished all of the many challenges and there is huge community which releases even more challenges!

It takes a little bit to run through the tutorials, but it is time well spent as the game itself is amazing. The only thing I would add is the ability to put cells in a bigger environment, for really complex creations, but thats just being nit-picky. This game is great and I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants a bit of nerdy fun.

This is a nice, unique game with simple mechanics which make it super easy to pick up. My only issue is that the interface is a little awkward to use in places. More specifically, the age slider under the genome tab - I find it quite difficult to move it to the value I want without spending 5 minutes fiddling with it

One of those rare moments where you find exactly what you are looking for. A bit of a learning curve to get the hang of, and there are still things I'm figuring out, but overall this has aided my biology studies on inheritance and cell division. Really well made app, perfect for students.

Beautiful game, well constructed, challenging and captures your attention for hours. Atleast it has for me, I am even finding that I am having dreams about cells splitting and evolving to adapt and solve my every day problems. Not the weirdest dreams I have had by far being a new sleep deprived mum. I was looking for a brain stimulating game to help combat memory and concerntration problems I have encountered since pregnancy. This game has certainly helped with my concerntration and problem solving, it is to early to say wether it has made any improvement to my memory so I will have to update later. Overall, I am thrilled and love watching my cells evolve and thrive and conquer their environments.

This is definitely an amazing game and is a challenge. If you like games that make you think then this is a game for you. The challenges are difficult to solve so if you get fustrated easy then I wouldn't recommend it; though there is a forum for answers. The expriment mode is a lot of fun if you just like creating things. Also no adds that I've noticed so that's fantastic!

This made me learn so much, at the point I think I'm slightly addicted... although it is not actually that accurate to real life cells, it does well on the genome creation ability. If I could give more stars, I'd give over 5 that's for sure :D

This wonderful game shows off the wonders of evolution. By manipulating a handful of seemingly simple rules, you can actually make surprisingly complex little ecosystems. A series of challenges introduce the various concepts involved. Love it!

Amazing!!!! I love this app so much! Especially since i'm taking microbiology right now, and it's extremely nice to see some key concepts come to life! I really appreciate it! And that it's not your ordinary smarty pants game that only uses smarty pants-ness to allure people but is actually just a regular arcade game. This game is by no means ordinary, and i love it. I agree with the other reviews though that there's always room for improvement--more detailed and diverse cell types would be highly appreciated, although i understand how that could be hard achieve especially in a mobile app. But if you /do/ come to steam, I, among the many other science geeks, would be willing to pay (a reasonable price) for the added features and cell types. <3 Keep up the amazing work!

As long as you don't get frustrated by puzzles that require decimal precision, this game is great. And it's only about 5MB of space, quick download. Although the tutorials are a bit hard for some, I think that's exactly what is needed to progress through the later levels. Tutorials are not made to be easy, they're made to teach you the mechanics of the game. All in all, if you want a puzzle gamr you can play on the go, get this.

I am a huge fan of microbiology so i have a lot of fun with this. I cant solve challenge 23 though, no matter how hard I try. Do you have any hints for me? (Yes, I know that the challenge is rated easy, but still, Im only 9 years old. Im still stupid.)

D70%
by D####:

This game is amazing!! Stating the fact that this game is complicated at the begining got me to play it. Yet it is not that dificult to play the main game. If I can be so bold as to make some suggestions though (Do not let the suggestions detract from how awesome this game is) Suggestions: When selecting a cell in the magnifier I would like to see stats on the selected cell for ex. How long its been alive, what type and M class is it, what was its mother cell, how many splits before this sell, How much energy it has left and a randomly generatod name :) The GUI is very standard and could be more intuitive. Why is there is no Desktop version. I can just imagine having 1 000 000 cells instead of just 1 000 all with killer animations.

D70%
by D####:

Only thing annoying me the most is that so much is locked behind the challenges. I want to see evolution as it is, without having to complete the entire game first. Is there any way i can do this and unlock all the types of cells?

D70%
by D####:

Great game, creative thinking. At first it looked a bit boring, I admit. But soon - once you understand the controls - you get fascinated by the options you get. If ypu do everything right it makes you feel like a god. Or a great scientist. Or both. Give it a try!

D70%

Impressive. Just a quick read through the introductory material.. and then .. I don't even know ..it's just good. Judging by the inordinate amount if time I seem to spend on this one.. I've seriously been lost in it for a few days..it's only right to recommend. A tip of the hat to the developers.. that's all

D70%

Sad to see all the morons giving it bad reviews because they aren't smart enough to read the tutorials... ITS A SCIENCE GAME! FOR SMART PEOPLE! Its English is a bit off though... (loved it, was really hard though)

As evolutionary sandboxes go this is a great one and it deserves some love. It has a lot of potential. Currently it is quite limited by the game engine, and I would love to see improvement soon on that front as well as an expansion to other devices such as desktop pc's. If it ever does become available for the pc and it is well optimized, this game will become infinitely cooler. Really intricate organisms could be created, and true evolution would be a more viable method for obtaining organisms. Another feature i would like to see is the ability to see the conditions of the substrate on challenges. This would allow for more accurate evolutionary engineering in experiment mode. I understand that the conditions of the substrate in certain levels would remain purposely unknown though.

This is fun and makes me feel like I'm acrually thinking about the solutions rather than just going through permutations of possible solutions. That said, the descriptions of some of the genes need work. I have /no/ idea how Virocytes are meant to work, and it took more than a couple tries to figure out Nitrocytes.

H70%
by H####:

Dev, at the start of the app you might want to say WARNING Ttyphophobia alert. Because.... some of the challanges need the "adhesin" and that circular thing in the middle of the cells will really trigger "chill" for someone has tryphophobia. P.S. i have tryphophobia but it's just like a minor problem, i can "quite" handle the challanges. Might not be able for other people

D70%
by D####:

Really challenging. I spend hours sometimes just testing cell designs. It's super educational. Controls take a bit to understand and utilize but it's a part of the challenge. Graphics could be slightly improved, my version glitches when moving from Genome to Microscope. But over would recommend entirely.

D70%
by D####:

Some things are broken, like the controls for the neurocytes, they aren't explained very well, and the tutorial for using them is incomplete. I otherwise really like the gameplay; the forums to discuss the game are no longer available.

M70%
by M####:

This is a great app, except for one thing. I want to recreate the challenges exactly in experimental mode, but it is very hard to do. I would like there to be a feature where if you hold your finger on one of the challenges, it would open up in experimental mode. Then it would be easier to solve a challenge via evolution.

D70%
by D####:

Absolutely incredible. Original, complex, well-built, no intrusive ads or pay-to-play features, and enormous sandbox possibilities. Only problems I have: takes a LOT of processing power (each cell has to be processed, but that's a limitation of the device, not by the app) and the forum link appears to have been taken down. Neither of those things detract from my experience. This game is VERY difficult, but not unfair.

D70%
by D####:

Amazing to be able to watch evolution in progress. I love how I can just run a cell simulation, and see certain cells overtake others. The game is difficult, for sure, but it's a really good feeling when you beat one of the challenges.

D70%
by D####:

Poor user interface in mid-game levels. Specifically in virus and neuron cells. Hi Peter, i felt the tutorials were over simplifed for both the virual and neural cells. The virus cell tutorial simply required one to implant a single viral cell into the system, with no explanation of the "copy from" and "copy to" settings. And the neuron cells had a similar lack of explanation in the use of the oscillator setting, and its relationship with the channels.

D70%
by D####:

I highly recommend this game like its any other well made sandbox. While your cells start simple, they can grow to be very complex beasts that take over an entire Petri dish. The challenges in the campaign, while requiring some out of the box thinking, are well designed and give you more things to play with.

H70%
by H####:

Excellent implementation of the evolution idea. It's surprising the amount of variety you can have with so few variables to change. One of the tutorials broke for me, though. Be careful! Edit: for some reason, cells are spawning in with less mass then they should and dying instantly. Specifically, the first lipocyte challenge. Restarting the game fixed it, though.

I love this game and the interesting mechanics but they are a bit confusing at first! Over time you can learn how to use them and it makes the game twice as fun. The only reason why it's a star off is because it took me a while to learn but it's still amazing!

D70%
by D####:

This game introduces you in a concept of challenges and contains some of the most creative ideas within editing and playing. I'm impressed such a great game even has no ads (at least I never noticed them) and no pay to win (you only get further in the game with beating challenges).

This is by far the best Cellular Automaton I have ever played. The only thing that compares is Conway game of life. This game can be very difficult, but it is brilliant for teaching how simple organisms work, and has a lot of cell variety.

D70%
by D####:

AMAZING game, i wasnt able to do much with neurocytes without looking up tutorials, though its still fun just to mess with the experiment/sandbox mode. Stop giving this 1-star reviews just because your too retarded to unserstand how to play. Also, thanks Petter, for not spamming ads and IAP like every other free app.

D70%
by D####:

Great game. Tricky and though provoking. Good for a short play or an hour. Gets difficult quickly, but fun to try different solutions. Only issue is it is sometimes difficult to visualise the development of a multi-cellular development in the editor. Would be good if the was a kind of tree view.

R70%

When I first got this game, I thought it was very complicated, which made me excited to learn it. Now I've gotten every cell type, but some of the "Very Difficult" challenges still await me. 10/10 would take until Deception just to find out how to beat Infestation again.
