Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is a turn-based strategy/role-playing game based on the award winning Call of Cthulhu RPG. Set in the midst of World War One, the game pits your team of investigators and soldiers against an ancient enemy, one older than humanity itself... Can your team of investigators keep their grip on sanity long enough to stop these diabolical plans? The fate of humanity is in your hands...
Developed in conjunction with Chaosium and based their multi-award winning Call of Cthulhu RPG.

The game features:
- Full 3D graphics with high quality textures, images and effects to bring the action alive.
- Select from a range of authentic period weapons, equipment, armour, skills and more.
- Build your team up to match your gaming style; will you shred your foes with massed rifle fire or blast them with powerful spells gleaned from forbidden tomes? It's your choice!

Call of Cthulhu was originally the title of a novella by cult American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) which has, since it was published in 1928, captured the imagination of generation after generation of fans. Returning to the horror from Lovecraft's original 'Reanimator' set during the dark days of WW1, Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land draws the player into a nightmare world where the terror of mustard gas and trench warfare are but a foretaste of what is to follow.

The prescribed "solution" of logging out of the Google Play Store and back in again hasn't worked - license check still fails. Sorry Red Wasp, but I won't be back.

I'm convinced the people complaining about the movement do not understand how it works. If your new to this type of turn based game, it can be tricky at first.I love these type of games and this one is one of the best. Thanks for a great game love it, love it, love it please make more.

I wrote the devs a few years ago when I first bought the game about the screen touch issues. As others have complained, the game does not respond promptly to screen touches, if at all. I told the devs I'd hold off on a review, but they never responded. Many other devs have responded to email feedback, sometimes within minutes. They've neither responded or patched the app. Thus a one-star rating. That said, I'm eager to play. Prospective buyers, years later and no screen touch fix. Unacceptable.

I had problems with the controls on a Galaxy S3 but since I reinstalled it the controls work adequately if not perfectly. Good game though, great atmosphere.

The buttons just don't work, keep tap tap tapping & maybe something will happen eventually. Read another review about this & still no update.

I can not recommend this game enough. I completed it at the weekend It is blooming brilliant! It hits right in my sweet spot of Lovecraftian Horror, British characters. World War fiction & compelling narratives. The game is a fairly easy to understand game, and once you play around with attributes you can build up a very formidable team. The art is gorgeous and the mechanics are solid. I pure loved it!

I don't have any experience with the Cthulu world, but picked this up pretty quickly. I did need to re-read the instructions for the controls... the are not quite intuitive, but work just fine. It would be nice to have a "replay level" option for those times when you just limp to the finish...

I wanted to love this game, but it's so ridiculously unresponsive I can't figure out how. Touching buttons, whether in the game or in the menus, does nothing. Sometimes holding them works, but only sometimes. Touching the environment likewise usually does nothing, but sometimes it does something, and sometimes touching three, four, or seven times moves a character when you were trying to see the action point cost to move there. This is the least playable mobile game I've ever seen.

This app looked promising. Great graphics. Liked the tactical concept of the game. Unfortunately I could not get it to run in any practical way on my Droid Razor Maxx. Seemed like the app was beyond the phones processing ability. Also triied it on a Nook HD. Bit better than before but does not run well. Gets frozen n stuck. Finally deleted the game. How about a fix devs? Tried it again on a brand new Samsung Galaxy tablet and it STILL did not run well at all. Too bad. It looked like a great game.

While I've had a few crashes it still has held my attention for 5 hours within the 1st day of downloading. There are a few things that I hope they add to the controls to make the experience more fluid. But all in all this by far the best game I've seen in the Cthulu universe. Arkham Horror meets Xcom is the best explanation I can give.

Great concept, great everything but unforgivably bad controls. Have to peck at my screen like a bird to get the touch controls to respond. And I don't even have fat fingers!

Game is fun and the story is good but the thing crashes all the time. No way to exit the game other than use home key then go into task manager to kill the process, before I upgraded to AOKP I wrote a tasker profile to kill the app when minimized but that shouldn't be the end users job to fix that. At least now I can hold the back button to kill the app when I exit but for my other devices that aren't rooted I have to kill the app the hard way. In addition I find that the game freezes a lot and I need to restart my phone to get things working. With the crashes fixed and a dedicated exit button that kills the app I would easily change this to a 5 star review. Samsung Galaxy SII running android AOKP 4.0.4

Running on : Nexus 4 / Nexus 7 This is a brilliant little turn based tactics game, along the lines of LaserSquad / XCom, but with a nice dose of Cthulhu mythos added. It's also very well structured for short burts of play with it auto saving your last turn, and also last major checkpoint in a level so you can pickup/retry trickier sections. It can seem a bit slow to start, especially when your troops seem to miss 9 times out of 10 but after a level or two you noticed marked improvements (though machine guns still seem to always miss!). There are quite a lot of skill and equipment options that you can upgrade between levels, and when the sanity loss starts kicking in things get very interesting :) Graphics look great on nexus 4 and 7 ,definitely recommend it.

When I first ran it I had hopelessly unresponsive controls, and rated it a 1. However, I have since restarted my phone, started a new game and this time gone through the tutorial first rather than starting a regular game from the beginning, and the controls work perfectly fine now. Thank goodness because this game is fantastic. The mood and storyline are great, the strategy is really indepth, etc. A must for turn based strategy fans. I should add I contacted the maker of this game via email as I was having some issues, and they responded with advice quickly and concisely, very good customer service. Thank you.

Q70%
by Q####:

(Those complaining about the controls did not play the tutorial level.) Two things hold this back from being great: the lack of a mini map leads to lots of unduly tedious tap-drag-drag-drag to get targets in view. Secondly, the (rotatable) map gives no indication of cardinal direction and the scenarios have objectives like "get to... in the east." Finding the target location in such cases is extremely tedious, and is only possible because the target locations are marked in red. Lovely graphics, nice mechanics, but the lack of clickable minimap makes this more tedious than it should be.

The game itself is probably OK, but the difficult controls make it unplayable. And like a good abused lover, you keep making up excuses and blaming yourself, but after playing another game in the genre (Hunters: Episode One), it's clear that it can be done and this game is just too flawed to play. And that's a pitty, Cthulhu is nice. (even though it feels a bit tacked on in the first levels, but I hope that gets better later. It should, right. Right?)

Summary: The fact is that is one of the best squad level turn based tactics available for the android. The truth is - that isn't indication of the quality of the game, rather of lack of competition. Pros: Great visuals, runs well on Galaxy S2, great settings, unique Cthulhu elements such as sanity management. Cons: The game lacks most of the features considered basic in this genre. There is no friendly fire (you can call airstrike on your position without getting a scratch). The ammo is apparently unlimited and weapons don't need to be reloaded. The equipment list is fairly short and straight forward (this isn't about choosing right tools for the job, mostly it's just about getting enough money to get better item). There are none of more advanced features that exist in similar games: no destructible environments like in Silent Storm, no strategic framework like in UFO series, no personality and personnel management like in Jagged Alliance... Bottom line: A very fair turn based squad game for mobile platform... on PC there are far far better games.

First off the controls are can be horrendous - particularly getting the hang of attacking (hold) vs selecting (tap). The worst is the between mission equipping and swapping items (where it is tap to select both equipment and slot and then hold to buy). But if you can get past that there is a wonderful game hidden there. The turn based missions remind me of the tension playing x-com. Very satisfying building a squad with the right balance of skills. Great stuff.I'd recommend it.

This is a turn-based, squad tactical game set during WWI and in Lovecraft's Cthulhu universe. If you are a fan of the game play genre and Cthulhu Mythos I would highly recommend this title. I found the game really enjoyable and addicting. Game play itself is straightforward enough, the tutorial is pretty helpful for getting started. Missions at normal level increased the challenge at a reasonable pace. I'm curious to see what harder levels are like. Games skills are differentiated enough that you feel different "classes" do contribute in different ways to the success of your mission. I ended up with a party that could probably be described as healers, tanks and archers. Didn't encounter any game play bugs but there are some bugs during character upgrade. Sometimes when buying or selling items the wrong item would but or sell. If you are low on money that's a problem.

Have enjoyed this game in the past, on an older device. Now, with my note 3, the game is UNPLAYABLE! Looking at other reviews, it's not likely to be fixed.. Shame, as it has the possibility to be the best squad tactics game on android, akin to oldskool xcom, or jagged alliance 2. Such a shame....

L70%

This game has potential to be great. Yet has been let down by the poor movement interface. So to move a character can take alot of time and effort tapping the screen. More frustrating is that it will mark out the move distance for you and then not let you move to the targeted square via a double tap. Frustrating. I love the look of game so far and with the movement issues resolved i think it will be a welcome addition to my phone games.

K70%
by K####:

Using Laser Squad/X-COM mechanics. Action points for moving and shooting. Choices of snap or aimed shot. Features reaction/overwatch fire during opposing turns. RPG style character levelling up. Everything you need from such a game! The only real downside is I can't see a way to actually quit the app. There's no exit button on the main menu and pressing back from the main menu does nothing. If you press home it leaves the app running and it prevents the phone from sleeping when your screen goes off which drains battery. Please add a way to exit the app. Touch controls can be a bit unresponsive.

It's a bit of X-Com, a bit of classic Fallout, and a bucketload of Lovecraftian monsters. The interface takes a couple of missions to master but I can't think of how I could have done it better. Solid rules and tactical depth I wasn't expecting on a mobile game. Worth full price.

Brilliant turn based strategy. Could do with a higher difficulty to increase replay. Otherwise it's perfect. I will definitely buy any expansions or sequels (hint, hint Red Wasp)

On an unmodified unrooted ICS Moto Xoom this lags so badly that it is unplayable. Even the shop lags after the first map - so badly that you can't even equip your troops and a force close becomes necessary. I feel ripped off. One star is too many, as it stands today. 7-17-12 : STILL NO UPDATES. HOW IS THIS NOT FIXED YET?!?!

Looks very good but it's impossible to control on my S3. The controls just don't register 90% of the time and I had to force close to get the game to stop running. I hope they do a proper Android version because this is the kind of game I like and I'm a big Call of Cthulhu fan.

This is an amazing game. It has all the good things of X-Com although without the more intrincate details (like base building, personel management, research and hunt, although that was nice on X-Com, i still play it on DosBox :D ). It would be nice if it had a mini map and faster map scrolling (when you're sniping an enemy it gets annoying to drag the view again to view the enemy again).

I purchased this game a while ago and was unable to play it due to unresponsive controls but figured hey they'll fix it so uninstalled it and completely forgot about it and since I have got a new phone and although the controls are still a tiny bit clunky its easy to get over, the game is awesome, very in depth story line I just can't seem to put it down!

I'm usually pretty cheap and don't like buying apps, but I'm about 1/2 way through this game and have more than gotten my $5 worth out of it. As others say, there is an X-com / Jagged Alliance feel to the game. That being said, the theme and feel is pure Cthulhu and great fun. The save points threw me (during a mission it saves at the end of your turn, so if you need to turn your device off just finish the current turn then shut it off). There are some cludgy elements to the interface (buying and moving inventory items is a pain), but all in all this is a great game!

M70%

Maybe its just an issue with Samsung S3 compatability but the touch controls are completely broken and currently this makes the game totally unplayable. Don't waste your money.

The developers have done a great job here. Only four stars though as in game save feature is non existent... I also was hoping to play through again on hard mode with all of the stats I acquired during the 1st run... No such luck from what I've seen... also some control issues on the equipment screen... and as another reviewer said, mess up and don't have the right stats/ gear... start over! You got my attention RD. Fix some stuff and I'll pay for more content like this!

I really enjoyed this game once I replayed it focusing on upgrading the characters' shooting abilities first. Initially they are so terrible. The turn based combat is great and reminiscent of X-Com, allowing good use of tactics.

Great game on Android , looked great through HDMI onto the TV. It was fun doing multi player hot seat. Completed the game, so I hope more missions to come. The ability to have slots for more than one game at a time would be handy where a tablet is shared. More Cthullu Arcana and period content around the edges. As the investigators get deeper in the missions more content could be unlocked. I have thoroughly enjoyed this game.

Looks great, but the controls are quite unwieldy, particulalry with moving, often requiring trial and error and multiple taps to move players.
