Time Dice

Dice have been used since before recorded history and until now no one knew where they originated. Time Dice reveals the cursed secret of how dice came to human kind.

The oldest known dice were excavated as part of a 5000-year-old backgammon set at the Burnt City, an archeological site in south-eastern Iran. Other excavations from ancient tombs in the Indus Valley civilization indicate a South Asian origin. Dicing is mentioned as an Indian game in the Rigveda, Atharvaveda and Buddha games list. Dice also play a critical role in the great Hindu epic Mahabharata, where Yudhisthira plays a game of dice against the Kauravas for the northern kingdom of Hastinapura, which becomes the trigger for a war.

In Time Dice you will assume the role of a warrior hunter from a very long time ago. You are the strongest in your village and you are in line to be chief. You are married to a very beautiful woman and are very jealous of her.

Outside your village in a cave in the mountains lives a shaman named Uib. Uib benefits the village in many ways. He can predict the weather and the migrations of prey animals. He teaches the villagers agriculture. He can heal the sick. Uib also gives the villagers dice that he carves from animal bones. Playing dice becomes a popular activity in the village.

The villagers love Uib and this makes you envious. You resent that Uib is more powerful than the chief. You crave his powers.

One day you travel to Uib's cave and challenge him to a game of dice. "Uib, if you lose you must grant me all your power and wisdom".

Uib smiles. "And if I win? What do I get then?"

"Whatever I have. What do you want?"

Immediately Uib responds: "Your bride."

You fill with anger. The thought of Uib or anyone touching your wife is unbearable. But you accept.

Uib sits at the table, reaches into his robes to retrieve his dice, and rolls them on the table.

The dice come up 7. Uib has won. You lose your mind, pull your dagger, and thrust it to the hilt into Uib's chest.

Uib falls to the floor of the cave. It is a mortal wound but Uib does not die quickly. He reaches into his robe and pulls out a black object and pushes it with his thumb.

Soon a bluish glow covers everything in the cave. Everything becomes transparent in a very strange way. You feel as if you can see the world as it was, is, and will be all at the same time. You are terrified. A loud noise tortures your ears. You feel as if your mind is being crushed. Suddenly the blue glow coalesces into the dice on the table. It seems to be over and you are grateful to be alive.

Uib, with blood running out of his mouth, speaks: "By killing me you have cursed mankind to struggle on in this Dark Age. But your future will be very different than mankind's. You may only live as long as you possess the dice. You will never have any place in time but will be cursed to travel through time endlessly playing dice against the wisest minds of the future. If you can defeat them at dice you will gain their wisdom and advance to your next opponent, if you lose you will be trapped forever. Play well and perhaps you will be able to save the human race from itself." Uib smiles and dies.
