STORY
Michael Faraday was tinkering away, meddling with this and that. Coils and wires, beakers and vials, his workshop was filled with possibilities. But as his tinkering and meddling progressed, he grew frustrated at his lack of productivity and heaved a great sigh.
“If only I had studied more mathematics,” he said. “Ha,” he added with confidence, “I have spent my time more wisely without it.”
He jotted down an equation that not even he understood. It guided him to a chemical or two, or so he thought. He whimsically put his resources together, stacking and mixing according to his scribbles. He filled his own invention of a balloon with what looked like nothing more than a mess and, as he did, a wondrous miracle occurred.
The balloon began to float as if it had not been filled at all. It bobbed in place before gliding left and right. It gently bumped against Faraday's head and then it flew away from its master and through an open window. Faraday called after his creation, desperately wanting it to come back, but it was a curious thing, fresh and alive, and it happily drifted along and ignored its creator's calls. It planned to come back, really, it did, but for now it was far too eager to explore.
It soared past flowers and houses, flew past people and rivers. It was enjoying its freedom and was excited to discover more. It grew tired eventually, however, and decided that it would be best to return to its creator. Before it could change course, the balloon was captured and taken out of the sky. It was put in a dungeon, dank and scary. The balloon sulked, wanting to go home. It soon plucked up its courage and bobbed in the air, knowing that the only way out would be to escape on its own.
