About Taipan

Taipan was a home computer game from the early '80s that was fun and addicting despite its lack of graphics. It invented the trading-game genre. Taipan was inspired by James Clavell’s novel "Tai-Pan".

This Android version is modeled after the popular Apple II version. The infamous bug in the original game remains in this version.

• To skip most pauses, press the text shown.
• To speed up battles, tap the Fight or Run buttons again.
• Includes the simple "beep" sounds of the original.
• Tablets are supported.

Took me back to my childhood! When my school got their first computers in 1984, they were TRS-80s, on Fridays we got an hour to play this, instead of regular scheduled English class. The large fleets of pirates constantly dogging you, gets a little ridiculous, but most times they give you ample time to buy bigger ships with more guns. Mainly I love this game because unlike EVERY OTHER FREAKIN' MOBILE GAME, this one doesn't constantly beg for money

Sometimes when I open the game, my previous gameplay disappears, and I have to start over. How about a save/load option for different games. Other times, I go to HK to pay Li, and his pirates attack me.

100+ pirates, had to wait a solid 20 mins for the battle to end. Not fun. I will rate this better once more interactive choices are added to gameplay.

Annoyingly glitchy, you can deposit 100000's in the bank and it has gone back to 50000 by the next port. Likewise you can upgrade the ship capacity and goes back to 20 by the next port.

Fun game is even better since update. Thanks! 5 stars if you can get rid of the ads?!

The throw cargo is broken. Throwing 1:3 opium to pirates should alaSyd let you run away - but n this game you can get away with throwing 1000 opium to 50 pirates. The IOS version had this working orooerly. Without it you will always lose in this version.

Something reminded me of this game a few days ago, so I checked Google Play and whaddya know? It's exactly as I remember it on our Apple IIc, circa 1984.

Pirates got ridiculous...245 to 1 followed another 100+ to 1...no use in extended play it's a waste of time

Amazingly nostalgic .. Reminds me of tradewinds legends by bigfish ... Please add more graphics or perhaps a toggle for them.

I would have given 5 stars, but like other reviewers stated, the guns go way faster. I also recall there was a more gradual buildup of pirate strength. This game goes from 6 pirates to 206 in one turn. I'd like to at least have a fighting chance. Overall it is fun though.

I love this game, played when I was a kid, still play it on an old apple em... This is way more convenient, but guns seem to get hit a bit more in certain battles, but mainly, you cannot run away! That sucks, but, Great fun, I've prolly played it 20 times already on my phone... It would be nice to have a way to change those at the beginning of the game... I am a master taipan on orig., every time... Getting close on this Also how about writing Conglomerates Collide another great simple 80s game

Brings back lots of fond memories of Apple II days gone by. I do wish that the negative high interest rate bug was still in place. I always got a kick out of the loan shark owing me a gazillion dollars.

-- Chance of theft too great, -- Not enough chances to buy a cannon, -- too many turns needed for first fight with 'cannons & no debt', -- # of attacking ships out of proportion to cannons owned, (ex. Mine 9, theirs 109, - mine 17, theirs 193), -- ships chasing off the attackers should happen BEFORE your ship takes on damage.

I've seen worse, but I don't remember when. This makes me recall Zork fondly. And anyone who remembers that knows it sucked like a turbo boosted vacuum!

This is like being back in my childhood. I loved Taipan! Excellent! The only thing that I would like to see is it save your top 10 wins in a scoreboard so you have something to aim for beating.

There's not much to this and yet there's so much depth in it. Definitely worth picking up, especially if you want a more thinking/strategy kind of game for your phone or tablet. I actually have it on both! :P

90% of the game is well put together and is extremely easy and fun. It occasionally has random little glitches, but they're usually not something you can't work around. The save function also seems a little flighty, but overall an excellent game.

Loved this game. Played it many moons ago. Now that it's back, I'm playing it again. Doesn't need much time but can be highly addictive! Cool graphics, retro style! Now I can play it everywhere... Which isn't good. Lol!

I enjoy the game, but for some reason I am very rarely offered canons to buy. With how often my canons are destroyed when I'm attacked this leads to me always being defenseless. Haven't been able to play a game longer than 10 minutes before being killed by pirates.

compared to staipan this one sucks. i played the game many times but it's impossible to get guns. and compared to staipan li yuen is very strong from the beginning. there is no build up in this game. only good thing is that it sucks less than taipan retro

To when I was playing Taipan on my Radio Shack TRS-80 and Ellio's was the best frozen pizza. It was also a time when people payed hundreds for memory on 2K chips and were able to make things run on DOS. Now somebody complains when they get something for free. You know who you are out there. Spend that next five bucks you get, go to Staples and buy a dictionary.

Not like the original, but a reasonable attempt. If it was even remotely possible to keep going, I'd give it more than one star. But it isn't. By design. You could be "summoned posthaste" and leave for HK without delay, but that's no guarantee that you won't be attacked by 472 hostiles - that you fight until the last four - who in turn get chased away by Li Yuen's forces...whom you'll then face. All 769 of them. STUPID game. Aaaaaaannnd delete!

Game will just reset itself. You can have billions in coin, all is well; then you set the game down for a bit and when you return, your saved game is gone and you have to start over. Also, it it WAY to easy for attacking ships to hit your guns. You can go from 30 guns to 2 in a single battle.

Y70%
by Y####:

I played this game when i was a kid and loved it. However, there are glitches where it resets and you start over even if you "resume" your game. I was in the BILLIONS and it reset on me. Not happy about that.

I stumbled over this recently. Had not played since 1981. That was in a TRS80 if I recall correctly.

Very nice reproduction of a classic game I played on my Apple IIe. Would be nice if there was a (space bar) button for when messages pop up and you could scroll through them faster. The ship upgrades seem slow, both the holds and guns. The other thing it seems like the enemy comes out too fast and too strong at the start. A save feature would be nice. And thank you for keeping that 'bug'! lol When I first discovered it playing on the Apple IIe how I could make boocoo bucks totally by accident. Though it never really matter, other then I let Li Yuen get his money from the money lender...lol You really did a great job on this!

Y70%
by Y####:

The only real issue that differs from the original is that the Li Yuen pirates hit your guns much more often than the original game. You can go from 10 guns to 0 in a couple fights.

I spent many hours playing this on my Apple IIe and finding it for my Android was wonderful. Great game, exactly like the old one. Terrific time waster... I love it.
