The n-back task is a continuous performance task that is commonly used as an assessment in cognitive neuroscience to measure a part of working memory. The task was introduced by Wayne Kirchner in 1958.
What sets it apart from other memory training tasks is that it appears to meaningfully improve working memory, and subsequently some measures of fluid intelligence, according to several studies: JAEGGI 2008, STEPHENSON 2010, CLOUTER 2013, SAVAGE 2013, STEPANKOVA ET AL 2013.
The task involves observing a stream of items. As you are observing each item, you press the button if it matches the item displayed n items back.
