Castles of Mad King Ludwig for Android
Very good implementation of a very unique board game. Take seriously the advice to use 5 inch screen or larger... designers have done their best, but some bits are not quite legible on Nexus 5. I'd love to see an Undo button. I've accidentally pressed the check mark button to commit an unintended action too many times now. My fault, but it is detracting from my enjoyment of an excellent game.
Tutorial was generally good, as a person who had never encountered the game before. I found myself looking up things in the help menu for a while, afterwards, though. I don't feel like I had a good grasp of card mechanics, rewards, or where to look for information in some cases. Otherwise, everything runs very smoothly and the game is plenty engaging! May find it's way to my tabletop before long.
Very good translation of the board game into app form. Extremely fun, for a fraction of the price. There are a few flaws, though. You have to memorize your bonus cards, because there's no way to review them during play. The field of view is tiny, so deciding where to put a piece takes ages. And the scoring at the end of the game is incomprehensible. You only know who won, not why or how, so there's no way to learn how to improve oneself. Despite these minor flaws, definitely worth the purchase.
Superb delivery of a game with much interesting decision-making. The complex scoring is offputting at first, but makes it appropriately difficult to decide on the best move. The AI is good at calculation, of course, but poor at strategic placement of tiles, making it easy to beat once you get the hang of it. The tutorial is hard work without being very helpful; I got more from reading the rules.
Overall, if you're a fan of Castles you should buy this game. However, in order to improve the game, the A.I. needs to be better implemented: it routinely prices poorly such as favor tiles being on the low end, all computer players will pass if prices are appropriate such as a double favor tile being 15 or 10 for an example. On more than one occasion I've seen the computer player block itself in leaving it unable to purchase tiles the rest of the game. Instructions for campaign are sometimes not clear. Needs online play with friends.
The app takes the somewhat frightening looking boardgame, and shows how logical and easy it is to actually play it! The base game was already great this is a good implementation. Some minor issues remain, like it's very easy to accidentally end your turn when you want to rotate the tile.
This is a well implemented electronic version of the excellent table top game. It not only has a great interface for ordering tiles for purchase, but makes it easier to perform you're placement by showing possible locations. The campaign acts as a great training mechanism, to bring someone up to speed, if they have never played before. Overall, a great game and well worth a purchase.
Great App of one of my favourite board games. Some of the campaign missions are a bit too difficult at times though (read Hostile Brothers). The game can also enter a state where you cannot continue and the AI will constantly pass. This requires either a restart which can get annoying. But still love it.
I love the campaign mode when you want to try a challenge outside of the normal game. It crashed on me once but the latest update has been problem free.
This app does a fantastic job of replicating the game. The only thing missing that I see is online multi-player as with pass and play it's too hard not to see other players' utility cards. Not that this has stopped us from enjoying it thoroughly. Good job!
Addicted to this game. However I would love to see the rotate button moved far away from the confirm button. I have pressed it by accident on my phone screen multiple times.
One of my favorite games that I can never get people to play. This app lets me play whenever I want, and it gives me an easy way to show people how to play the board game version.
The AI cheats. When all the computer controlled players PASS on my turn so I get zero money is bullsh!t. And it happens EVERY GAME. Frustrating and cheap tactics with uninformed scoring.
Overall, this is a great port of a great boardgame. With that said, online play and sync between devices would easily make this a five star experience.
Fine game, poor implementation. Inconsistent rules, abysmal AI. I guess it might work as a pass and play but if that's the case you'll have a better time just buying a physical set.
Fun to play. A good interpretation of a great game. My one complaint- It would be nice to play this on my Android TV devices- my gamepads would make it much easier to play, and it is _really_ small on my phone!
Great game. It is easier to learn to play on here. Now I feel like I could get the board game and not be overwhelmed.
Easy to use. Great visuals. Love the stories. The campaign mode has interesting challenges and the match mode is awesome. Love the automated point tallies as that was my least favorite part on the board game.
I was really loving this app and a 5 star rating seemed likely, but then I came across the Hostile Brothers campaign. This is frustrating and I believe impossible, it needs to be fixed; remove pieces that can't be played and if I can't play living spaces why can the AI? Game also needs an undo button for mistakes. I've found other campaigns that I don't think are possible to beat.
This is an enjoyable game. Only thing is that I with they would explain what the symbols mean on the castle tiles and how certain rooms proc extra turns/pts etc in the tutorial.
I was going last in a 3 player game, and bought a Food Room. The placement of it ensured it would be completed as I placed it, and I expected to take my extra turn to buy a small Living Room, placing and completing that as well, for another 10 points. Instead, after placing the Food Room, the game ended. The rules say the game ends after the final round, not after the first action of the final player in the final round.
So much fun, I just wish there was more to the campaign so I could keep playing.
My family liked the game so much we ordered the board game and expansion. My wife also purchased the IOS version because she liked it so much. I would pay for the expansion if it were available for the app.
Fun game, just like the board game. Some of the levels are literally impossible. Playing against other humans would be a nice addition.
Great game. Wish there were a way to view the manual in-game. Would be 5 stars if there were a verification prompt when you end your turn without completing any actions - it's too easy to accidentally click 'done' when scrolling around the map.
This app really takes advantage of what a device version of this game can offer while sacrificing none of the originals joy.
Really enjoying the game. Could use a bit more detail in the tutorial. Had to ask a friend to finally understand how you earn coins. Still not totally clear on it and on the strategy of being the builder and rearranging the costs each turn. But otherwise the game has kept me engaged.
This is a great game. Very good implementation of a great idea. I would like to have that undo button, though! I too keep mistakengly place Confirm button instead of Rotate. :)
Great game, but please fix following bugs: when playing in flight mode, the game keeps restarting. The colors of players are mixed when restarting the game. Also some kind of history of the previous match scores would be helpful.
I love the challenge of playing single player, as well as against opponents. Great setup for teaching what could be a complicated game.
I'm still bad at it, though.
Haven't played much yet, but so far it's a perfect port of a board game.
This is an amazing game. It has great mechanics, intuitive controls, and is strategy heavy. The soundtrack is very beautiful, I would love to be able to get it separately.
The challenges add extra depth to an already great game.
All it needs is online play and we're set!
Jeremiah, do you have any plans to add the "Secrets" expansion to the app? Also, where is the app soundtrack from? My wife and I love the game and the app! Great job!
I thought it'd be hard to translate the board game to a phone's screen, but color me impressed. Very well made game!
And good replay value. You'll have to do many of the campaign scenarios multiple times to get a perfect score.
I love playing campaign games so I can work towards goals. Great way to improve my game!

I love this game and really enjoy playing the campaign but I've run into a couple issues. 1) I should be able to report bugs from within the app. 2) I emailed about a bug a week ago and have gotten no response. 3) In the setup of a game, I just got the notification that there weren't enough bonus cards for me to take any, even though the computer player after me got to take 2. I restarted the game and got the same thing. No point playing with the game stacked against me that much.
