Inden LLB

Schon seit dem 15. Jahrhundert ist Leukerbad für seine heilsamen Thermalquellen bekannt.

Badegäste gelangten mittels Maultieren über die Gemmi oder in dreistündigem, beschwerlichem Fussmarsch von Leuk zum Kurort.

Obwohl seit 1889 erste Projekte Leuk und Leukerbad mit einer Eisenbahn verbinden wollten, wurde im Jahre 1913 als Erstes die Strasse nach Leukerbad eröffnet.

Ihre Gründung erfuhr die Leuk-Leukerbad-Bahn (LLB) am 31. März 1909. Am Schalttag des 29. Februar 1912 begannen die Bauarbeiten am Bahntrassee. Der Pionierleistung entsprechend konnte drei Jahre und vier Monate später – am 15. Juli 1915 – bereits der erste Zug von Leuk nach Leukerbad fahren.

Die Schmalspurbahn mit einer Spurweite von einem Meter war 10.5 km lang. Sie verfügte über steile Zahnrad-Rampen.

Auf den flacheren Strecken war die LLB eine Adhäsionsbahn, wo der Antrieb alleine über die Haftreibung der Räder erfolgte.

Aus Kostengründen führte das Bahntrassee auf einer Strecke von 2.5 km auf jenem der Strasse.
