About Evolution

Use joints, bones and muscles to build creatures that are only limited by your imagination. Watch how the combination of a neural network and a genetic algorithm can enable your creatures to "learn" and improve at their given tasks all on their own.

The tasks include running, jumping and climbing. Can you build the ultimate creature that is good at all of the tasks?

Note that this is a simulation and not a game. There are no real objectives. Even if a creature of yours reaches 100% fitness, you don't win anything except for (hopefully) lots of excitement and joy.

For more information on how the algorithm works behind the scenes and everything else you might be interested in click on the "?" button in the creature building scene.

1.1 Update: You can now save and load your simulation progress.

There is also a Mac & PC version available for download and a browser version for you to try out on the main project website (keiwan.itch.io/evolution).

Quick sidenote: The simulation is pretty CPU heavy so it won't run too well on old/low-powered hardware. If you experience lots of lag you might be able to improve the fps by lowering the population size in the start menu.

Fantastic. I have wanted an app like this for a long time now.

I saw this sim or something really similar to this on a friends computer around 2008 it was fun to draw the critter and see how it behaved

Amazing! I really enjoyed this. Please keep adding more features found in genetic algorithms, especially when it comes to inheritance.

The creatures are so funny

It's fun but I really don't know how to actually make something walk

Needs bigger hitboxes for connecting bones with muscles. Also would be nice to adjust where muscles connect and how stretchy the bones are. Or be able to connect nodes with muscles and or bones. Also would be cool to have it generate without the animations and watch a chart slow the performance. Look up walkinator for some references

So, I know all about simulated evolution and I've been waiting for so long for someone like you to come along and make one. My only advice would be add like flying organisms or something that'd be fun. I just want to say thank you for making this for us crazy biologists and computer scientists.

I don't like it because it is hard to make

It very cool and interesting. I think an improved learning ability and more to the "evolution" maybe very slight changes to your creature as a setting and different friction so it doesn't slid around hopelessly. But a good idea. Would love to see it flourish

I love this game. We need more games like this although i may have encountered a physics glitch where i built a specific creature and when i pressed evolve the game went berserk, never laughed so hard KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

Great game, fun to see how creatures interpret what they're given. My only suggestion is some sort of save and continue feature. A way to save a generation of a creature so you can return to it later. I'd like to show others, but I can't keep the app running all day (or multiple days) just to show people an interesting creature.

MAH BABIESSS! I created my own creature... at first it flopped on the ground like a fish then many generations later IT WAS ACTUALLY WALKING :D

Every time I click "Evolve" it automatically turns off and it says It has stopped. Fix it please. It could be such a good game

Really promising. Keep up the good work and add some obstacles. Would be nice to see some more complex mechanics

C70%
by C####:

It isn't very capable of handling big things and there's not even that much to it.

I am sorry for my rude comment, this game isn't suited for me,I said this rude comment cause I tried making a human-like creature expecting it to walk like one
