About Sea Hero Quest

"It’s not just a game, it’s a quest to help scientists fight dementia!”

It sounds too good to be true but this really is a game, where simply by having loads of fun chasing creatures around magical seas and swamps, you can help to fight a disease that currently affects 45 million people worldwide.

In fact playing SEA HERO QUEST for just 2 minutes will generate the equivalent of 5 hours of lab-based research data.

Created by GLITCHERS, presented by Deutsche Telekom and supported by scientists from University College London and University of East Anglia and the lovely people at Alzheimer’s Research, SEA HERO QUEST is an epic culmination of science and gameplay that will change the way dementia research is done forever.

One of the first symptoms of dementia is loss of navigational skills. Doctors cannot differentiate between getting lost caused by disease and getting lost caused by natural ageing because a benchmark of “normal” does not exist.

Until now … because as you play, your navigational data is tracked anonymously, stored securely and combined with every other player from around the globe, to create the world’s largest crowd sourced data set benchmarking human spatial navigation. This incredible resource will eventually lead to the development of new diagnosis tools and treatments for dementia.

Navigate Arctic Rivers, Golden Shores and Mystic Marshes (and Kano Reef coming soon, Kaano fans!), collect memories in your journal and chase magical creatures like Adorabella, Galleo and Octopoid. Collect as many starfish as possible and use them to customise your boat with a new lick of paint, a host of flags and much more!

Deutsche Telekom believes that life is for sharing, that’s why they are presenting SEA HERO QUEST – a game to help scientists fight dementia and work towards a future where memories are shared not lost before their time.

Join the Quest and be a real-life hero.

Sadly, like previous comments, this app started well but on about level 8 it became impossible to steer. No movement possible to right or left, so headlong into whatever was in it's path. The helpful comment re steering so as not to crash into icebergs didn't help!! I'm uninstalling this until improvements made, as this gives false info to research. Would also be useful as a Window app, as a bigger screen could improve results.

V70%
by V####:

Slow to respond to tapping the screen meaning I keep crashing into icebergs on route to the sea creature. Also the maps feel quite different from the actual course. Once I'm on the course, allthough I've memorised the map I can't seem to navigate it very well, maybe I just need time to get used to the transition from map to course... Or maybe I'm just crap at navigating... Other than that, a fun, innovative and cleverly designed game with a very admirable and important purpose.

Z70%
by Z####:

It's not enough info gathered about the players. 6 questions doesn't tell all about me. Just because i live in one country doesn't mean i born and grow there up there. Chosing English doesn't mean it's my first language, so might not understand that terminology. ...and many other factors such as played any games before, kind of phone its played on, any physical disabilities and eye sight... could affect the player ability and effectiveness. It's a good start but huge improvement needed.

Z70%
by Z####:

Difficult to control the boat...I am not someone who plays these games as a rule. I find the navigation easy enough but the control of the boat not so much. How can the speed element due to cognitive ability be separated from the speed (or lack of) due to lack of skill using the controls?!

X70%
by X####:

Not a fan of video games for many reasons. Love this game because I can contribute to scientific research to better understand the initial decline of cognitive reasoning or skills associated with Alzheimer's. Learning to enjoy the gaming skills that I am starting to master. Game can be addictive when I am trying to master each level.

F70%
by F####:

The boost doesn't always work. The data would be more accurate if this worked and reflected my true intentions without interference from the controls. You'll have to normalize based on phone model, os version, etc. to keep this from skewing results.

Z70%
by Z####:

the boat is so hard to control I found myself crashing into the ice and going round in circles. Sometimes I even missed a bouy first and even second attempt because I couldn't steer the boat! Nothing to do with my ability to navigate. I hope this does not give false data. Sadly I gave up playing out of frustration.

M70%
by M####:

When doing navigation tapping either side of boat to change its direction doesn't work fast enough. So results for the sea chase thru icebergs are meaningless I had to do the iceberg chase innumerable times because of the slow response I find tapping just ahead of the boat helps but I still crash into icebergs

Not the greatest game ever but you you can't fault the idea and its a lot better than some mobile games out there. Personally I think combining games and research is a fantastic idea and I hope to see more games like this in the future so long as the company's focus is research not profit.

Z70%
by Z####:

This game is absolutely rubbish but it is said to be helping in dementia research. I so hop this is true. If not I warn you to expect a class action law suit for false representation. I will be joining it and claiming for all my wasted time if it is not in aid of a good cause.

Z70%
by Z####:

The title says it all really. A well thought-out little game. I filled in the extra information they requested. I'm retired, so this research may even help me at some point! Game responded well on my Samsung tablet - no issues at all. BTW, if you don't get 3 stars you can repeat the level as many times as you wish.

M70%
by M####:

Very slow to respond & games very tedious. I think any info. obtained from it will be pretty useless. I never play this sort of game & so am pretty poor but you can't fail-you always get 1 star. How do you know how you're doing, there's no incentive?

Z70%
by Z####:

The YouTube video that explains the background of the game is barely two minutes long but got me involved right from the start. The game is legitimate fun especially if you like navigating in virtual spaces. Also, the data is used for dementia research, what an incredible idea! Rightly nominated for the Video Game Awards 2016 in the category Games for Impact. A personal impact from playing the game and hopefully also an impact on dementia research. Great work!

Z70%
by Z####:

The idea behind this is fantastic, and the format of the game is easy to understand and fun to play! Personally, I haven't encountered any of the issues that others have, and I'm now on level 31. But I would definitely recommend this to anyone, both as a game and a way to help provide data for dementia research.

Z70%
by Z####:

Great game though needs some work on the controls. It mainly comes down to the boost area interfering with the left control, maybe a steering area towards the bottom of the screen would help things, or even just a clear button for boosting.

J70%
by J####:

If only the controls were not so slow and cluncky. If only the game did not freeze as often, it would be full marks. The fact it is done to help scientists fight one of the scourges of modern society makes this a game everyone should play. I am playing it so others don't have to suffer what my mam had to. Dementia destroys lives and families. Play this game and help! Other games should consider helping science fight disease like this is trying to do.

(Latest review) It's now stopped working, black screen/white anchor; then nothing. (Old revirew)There aren't many things left in the world whereby we can 'all' be encouraged to help people help people, and in turn, help the very people who used to play this 'scientific project' in the past (now), for the future... "that would be, 'you' and I" ;->

S70%
by S####:

The game is fun, but it takes some time to get use to controlling the boat. Sometimes, it doesn't control well on my smart phone. However, with that being said, I feel like I am helping with the Alzheimers cause.

Z70%
by Z####:

I dont usually play this type of game, but as it is for research, thought i would give it a go. Its good fun, but my reflexes/ reaction time could be better. I find the boat difficult to control at times. The boost button is a little unpredictable.

X70%
by X####:

I'm a huge supporter of software and efforts that are undertaken in the name of dementia and Alzheimer's research. This game could use some improvement in terms of the controls and the maps, but for what it is and for the cause it supports it gets 4 stars.

Little white anchor then black screen. Waited 5 minutes then Uninstalled and reinstalled. Same effect. Rebooted phone. Same issue. Phone is updated and everything else works. WiFi is solid. Wish this would have worked with all the good reviews. HTC One M8 so not a phone issue.

Z70%
by Z####:

I would like to get feedback on how I am doing versus average of my age. It also locked up for me once on Samsung tablet. Difficult stearing and I could not figure out go and pause.

Z70%
by Z####:

The concept is good, unfortunately in its present form, the game isn't. It's very unresponsive to commands. How do the researchers distinguish between the defects of the game, the possibility of a person's poor gaming skills and incipient dementia? Conversely, a young, experienced gamer could well overcome the game's deficiencies yet have poor spatial concepts. Again, how do the researchers know? For me there are too many variables for this game to significantly assist dementia research.

Z70%
by Z####:

Gets a little more difficult with each level. Quite child like, but doing research on a budget is the only choice for researcher's. Didn't expect a grand theft auto gaming level so quite relaxing and enjoyable.

Z70%
by Z####:

Good idea - let down by poor interface. Using this on tablet (Samsung) and unable to steer boat around icebergs and rocks. So have uninstalled Lots of other brain training software out there with great graphics and animation AND easy to use.

Z70%
by Z####:

The game is great and playing it does mean that I am contributing as well. The only issues are that some maps do not show where you start to help navigate, and some maps you can barely get three stars even while using the boost and going directly to the buoys which seems odd.

O70%
by O####:

I really like the idea of using a game to do research. My grandad had Alzheimer's. So I think it's great that it helps research into dementia. The only big issue I can see with this game is the steering can be slow to turn. Manoveability can be frustrating but maybe that's on purpose to test if you can still remember which way to go after crash into the walls or maybe not, I don't know.

Z70%
by Z####:

I am 74, but have been playing computer games for over 20 years. I like word games and puzzles, but thought I would give this a try. It is not for adults, it appears to be designed for children. Besides the boat is impossibe to steer, it does not respond to my touching the screen. I tried it a few tines, but will now uninstall.

Z70%
by Z####:

I was reluctant to ply this game but since my Mom has dementia at 88. I am 67 and want to challenge myself to see how I will perform. It really exercises my brain.

Z70%
by Z####:

Not sure if it my phone but there is no clear instructions as to how to play. Tapped lots of times on the screen and nothing actually happens. Bit of a waste of time really.

Z70%
by Z####:

I'm not a gamer at all - too much else to do in real life - but I installed this game and have started playing it because it's for a good cause. My major complaint is that there are no instructions at all, so learning how to play is a case of trial and error. Will this impinge on the research results? For example, my first results will be poor because I was learning how to steer. And I've still no real idea how to slow down/speed up/pause. Or maybe testing one's ability to figure out the controls unaided is part of the research. In any event, though the graphics are lovely, and it's a great idea, the lack of instructions is frustrating so I'm only giving 3 stars.

There's no better reason to be on your phone than to help progress research. If everybody is going to rely on their phones as much as they do, they might as well make it worthwhile.

Z70%
by Z####:

I just wonder how the researchers factor experience with game apps into this study. What ive read so far the research says younger people show better navigating skills than older players. Id expect that younger players would have more exprience. But researchers didnt ask my experience with game apps so they cannot know if my unfamiliarity is affecting my ability to navigate. Isnt that kind of important in this research? Or is something besides dementia research happening?

B70%
by B####:

Keep getting 2 stars as too slow but can't seem to speed boat up. Sometimes left and right doesn't work too well either. So not sure if data will really be that useful but hope it helps!

L70%
by L####:

A good game that's fun. But after just 6 minutes playing I'd given enough data to do 16 hours of research into dementia. An awesome concept.

I70%
by I####:

When it works it's very good, but I have a Samsung 6 Edge and the app doesn't always seem to respond to my finger tapping. Sometimes it seems to only work if I tap very lightly and sometimes it just doesn't respond at all. As this app gathers data I think there needs to be an option to say ignore that as the game just wasn't responding to what I was doing. I'm a bit worried about using it and giving erroneous data.

Z70%
by Z####:

The controls take a bit of getting used to - they're quite twitchy. Apparently spending 6 minutes playing is equivalent to 15hrs of dementia research.

Z70%
by Z####:

Running Android 5 and can't even move onto the next stage without problems. My touch screen works ok with all other games but this is very slow to respond if it will do so at all. Looking at my result would give wrong information for the study so am uninstalling it. A shame as the idea is good.

Z70%
by Z####:

When you first start playing the controls are a bit hard since it'll be your first time. But after a few levels it becomes much easier. Having a game that contributes to the research of Dementia is just amazing. Also as a side note, you can also answer about 9 anonymous questions, though it's all your choice. You don't have to answer if you feel like its too intruding or for any other reasons. Also, if you don't like the idea of your data being shared, you can turn it off in the settings at any time.

Great game... Tells me I'm not as good at navigating as I thought. Makes me a little more pro active about keeping my brain engaged with problem solving games and activities now while I can... Thanks!
