The controls are a bit strange at first, but I really like it.

I've been waiting patiently for this. This is the game that I've been looking for. IAP bug affected me, but fixed over the weekend. o/

Star Squad is interesting, as it is seemingly a bullet-hell shooter in which you yourself don't shoot anything - instead your task is to rescue little bubble people without getting destroyed. It has some interesting mechanics that set it apart from most games of the genre. One of the most interesting of these is that your ship is controlled by holding your finger against the screen and moving it where you want your little ship to go. Even more interesting is that the game pauses if you remove your finger. In this way the game resembles something like Super Hot, where each movement can be calculated while paused, giving the game surprising tactical depth at times. On the negative side, the constant blaring 'suggestions' that you buy one of the in-app purchases are so obnoxious at times they remind me of late 90s internet advertising, all flashing colours and pop-up advertisements. All this aside, Star Squad is a fun little time-waster with enough novelty in its mechanics to stand out from the crowd, and it's well worth a try.
