Cribbage Classic for Android
The game plays well, but even on pro level it would lose to a relatively poor human player. The computer's lack of predictive ability really shows in its poor pegging play, and I disagree with the algorithm on some of the suboptimal plays on similar grounds. Nonetheless it's good for learning and improving, but it won't be playing in the pub leagues any time soon.
As an avid Cribbage player I find the game plays very well at the Pro level, which is the only level I've played it. I do find the "optimal play" review interesting and see its value for players serious about improving their play. This is the only app I've played with this feature. Although the absence of seeing animated pegging is missed by me, it clearly doesn't help the excellent flow of the game as it exists.
I like the hints and stuff for beginners, and the stats, and optimal play analysis. The tutorial could be improved. It's a little unclear on some things. I really like the user interface for handling cards and scoring. I miss seeing a real peg board, but I realize that screen real estate is limited. The skunk and double skunk lines should be shown. Some sound effects would be a nice extra touch.
Absolutely love playing crib! This app is a great game! I love the different "levels" easy-standard-pro. The only thing is I have never ever heard of anyone counting a flush in crib... I've played with so many different people and I work in a Nursing Home and have played with several elderly and I have never ever heard abiut counting a flush! I couldn't figure out some of my sub optimal plays, I would review then and think no! I would have lost points not gained them! Other then that, this app is perfect!
Easy play is that, standard is a good challange. It keeps rating 'sub-plays' saying what I should have done. But I am currently 100% wins so I cannot be doing mich wrong. Why would I put a pair in the opponents crib unless I had no other choice? A minor issue and still a good game.
Works well. The AI seems decent. The amount if help to learn the game is very nice. Can get hints, set the opponents level, and check for optimal discards. Gives you a list of sub-optimal plays at the end. Wish it would explain why on some. Sties I don't see where one play is better than another on the pegging pile Such as pile of 2,4,4,4 where I played a 2 and the optimal play was a 5 for two. Just not sure where the two points comes from. Still a good game and a fun way to learn to play.
Pretty ideal. Most enjoyable cribbage game I have played on Android. (I've tried 15 different apps.) I would go full five stars if you could buy an ad free version, save your games, and if there was an option for playing online with friends. However, if you don't mind a small ad on the bottom, it's a great little crib game.
I've been playing crib for 40+ years, and I play to win. I've got a win average over 70% with just over 80 games played. I find the game realistic, although not overly challenging; don't know why people are saying the game favors the opponent in pro, I notice as many good cuts in my favor as there seems to be for the opponent. Must be sour grapes. Competition breeds excellence. A ' save game' feature would be nice though. All in all, a solid game.
Since I was a lad, my dad and mom have pitted their skills at this game against me, each to their frequent downfall. They taught me this game, and then I mastered it. Being able to play against this computer is almost like playing against one of them. I do wish there were a harder mode so I can increase my abilities, and also wish this had the ability to play 3-player games as well (for those games add a second dynamic which is lost in 2-player combat). The way it analyzes the way I play is a handy feature too. However, all-in-all, this is good fun, and I enjoy every minute.
Have been playing the game for a while now. Very easy to predict what opponent has for cards. Also how the opponent plays cards during pegging. Computer always seems to get flushes, in the 30 plus years of playing crib I have never seen that many flushes. Also when I throw cards to the opponents crib it generally benefits them with the turn card. If you have hint mode on the computer tells you to do another play when putting cards into the crib which is less benifital.
It's good. Easy to use. Lots of stats if you're into that. I wish you could speed up the pace more than the fast setting. The "optimal play" helps you understand the strategy of the game better. Although the "optimal pegging" seems broken. There's a problem with the a.i. getting too good of hands. You can make all "optimal" plays, out-peg the a.i. by 20, and still get skunked consistently.
This Cribbage app has it all. I love the analysis that it is capable of, post-game. This is the kind of thought-provoking stuff that real card enthusiasts discuss after a hand. I find it fascinating to know when what I view as the "correct" play is nonetheless statistically suboptimal. Bravo, sir. Things I would add: 1) Show your crib if computer wins, to see how close you could have come. 2) Add a post-game stat to show total #of points added by the *cut* card for each player. (Luck indicator.) 3) Do not count "missed points" from discards on last hand where we know the game will end on the pegging.
Edit: I think I understand better why the AI gets above average cards (player does too, but less). It is likely much easier to program statistical "best choice" cards for the hands and cribs. Programming intuition during pegging is much harder. Honestly though, the only reason I care is because the game itself is otherwise so good. I would also suggest an update to the statistics to not suggest alternatives for plays that are within a point of being optimal.
I have played another where the scoring went fast, like some of the other reviews mentioned, but this one doesn't. It leaves the score and counting up for you to review for both players. Maybe it has been updated since those reviews. I like the hints to check my discard choice. Also the layout and UI are nice and easy to use. Haven't had any unfair plays or games, yet.
The game presentation is crisp and plays smoothly. However, it will not go into landscape mode, and if I accidentally hit the back button it kills the app without being able to resume the game. I just looked at my phone settings and can't see anything wrong. Hope this is useful, I'm running Android 4.1.2 on a SGH-T989D.
I find this to be an enjoyable game and appreciate its visibility and the way the cards are played. some cribbage games have very small print and not good lighting. (Later) I actually uninstalled this game for awhile thinking I would find a better cribbage game. However, even though sometimes these hands seem stacked agsinst the player hand after there isn't a better cribbage game for graphics, clarity and visibility. Kudos
2 minor criticisms: 1) let me play my next card whenever I'm ready, don't block me with your petty 2pt award ... I saw it already. 2) explain the "sub optimal" algorithm. It seems like the median score of the alternatives would be a more appropriate metric of "optimal" play than the average.
Option to turn off automatic scoring for you is nice and helps counting if Muggins is disabled. Pro is obviously stacked when the game says my avg. error is only ~5-6 pts and I haven't won a pro game yet. Other levels (Easy, Standard) play fine. Ads are a single banner ad at the bottom which doesn't affect play. No special permissions (Hallelujah!) =P.
I am a pretty good cribbage player, but this "pro" AI seems to always get the better cards. I've never had so many 16+ point hands against me. Seems a little sketchy if you ask me. Also, whenever I have a flush in my hand it never gives me the four points. But if the AI has a flush then they get the four points....
Love the simplicity of the layout. The cards seem to be random which is what always seems to be missing from other programs. I love the sub optimal plays showing at the end. Really helps me to up my game.I just started using this but so far I'm extremely impressed and very happy. Fantastic job.
Points don't show on a cribbage board so that takes some of the fun out of it. The game plays life like as far as peg points and crib hands! I love playing cribbage but don't have anyone to play with so this is very awesome for me!!! The way it shows the optimal play makes it good for newer player's to learn with!
I have had this game for all of an hour and I love it! It is quick and easy to understand and use and even though I have played for 40 years it offers valuable insight and information about the game. Statistics and hints all at your fingertips. I would recommend this game to everyone who enjoys cribbage, from beginner to " pro " such as myself...ha! I just lost 3 games straight in the pro version.
My kids can use the easy, guided level with suggestions to learn how to play. But there's a medium and expert level which makes it challenging enough for anyone who knows how to play. You can count yourself or auto count the cards. There is also a function that tracks suboptimal plays by game and charts them over time. This is definitely worth 5 stars. I'm surprised it's free honestly.
The game board is nice and easy to navigate visually. The hints are helpful too. What stands out is how the computer is heavily favored. When I average 4 points per hand and 2 points per crib and the computer averages 6 and 4 respectively, there's no chance of winning. It couldn't be more obvious when the comp continuously gets nobs, 15's during pegging and last card played points.
I used to use their gin rummy app and really liked it, so I wanted to learn cribbage and theirs was the version I wanted based on my experience with the gin rummy app. Once again I was not disappointed. I also downloaded their Euchre and Backgammon apps for the same reason, but haven't tried them yet, although I have high expectations.
For example, I would like to see the final crib even if the game is over before it is time to reveal. Sometimes the hints are wrong, so you need to override if you see a play. For example, one hint had me put two diamonds in their crib. Instead, I chose the same cards, but one heart instead. The crib and the top card were all diamonds - except that heart. Five-point difference! Great for learning how to play.
Everything about this app is excellent all things considered. The playing algorithms are stronger than other cribbage apps, the hands seem realistic, and the analysis tools are helpful. The interface is kind of busy, probably because the app shows so much. Some of the math analysis may not be exact, but that's a tiny concern. It is fun to play and learn from, and it helps improve both discarding and pegging. One caveat: app requires no special permissions but it does send/receive data somewhere some why.
Would enjoy it more if it allowed you to count your own hand. I dont believe that the "sub optimal" play feature is very helpful, but then again I have been playing cribbage for 40 years. It is addictive. I had a half hour wait for a massage appointment last night and I never even felt like I was waiting.. I played the whole time and I was almost upset when I was summoned by the woman for my appointment.
Would have liked basic rules and objectives rather than trying to remember them. Also an override to the computers 'optimal' score would be good rather than turning it on and off in the settings. Liked it though. I am picking it up again. Not sure how a complete beginner would be able to play and know what they were doing and so learning to be a better player. The computer can play for you if that's your thing though.
Everything is well done. Maybe one suggestion. Slow down the counting process after hand is done. Counting properly is a hard skill to learn in cribbage. My dad, who taught me how to play, said that when he played as a young man, if you left points on the table without claiming them, your opponent could claim them if you didn't after you were done counting. That being said, it might slow down gameplay on app, but you would be more skilled as cribbage player.
Okay on my commute home from work all in all good game. Only issues, I wish the count didn't go so fast so you could actually watch it. Also it seems like once you win a few games it goes to favor of opponent. Hand after hand is a skunk when I've been winning non stop
Some parts of display truncated on my phone for some reason, but it does not affect my game play. Best cribbage game I've found so far - tried almost all of them -wonderful, useful hints and summary reports. Would like to see this game for my PC, honestly, could play it for hours. If the small display problem gets fixed; I'd rate it a FIVE for a free game. If there's a paid version without ads, l'll be purchasing it, that's how much I like it..!
Love playing cribbage and this app is great! Wish that it would have an option to play with 3 player, you versus 2 CPU players as I like playing with three better than two. I don't get high-speed at home so I'm not able to play the other 3 player cribbage games. Also as others have said I would like to see the final crib at the end of the game. Also I love the fact that you can have a 4 card flush in your hand without the top card being the same suit as I play this way at home. However, I had four clubs in my crib and the face card was a spade so the computer calculated that I had 0 points instead of four. If this was in my hand it would have been considered 4 points. Love the stats and overall the game is really fun.
Love the statistical analysis. No game logic which leads to bad advice in two instances. First and most important when you need to win in pegging the app remains focused on total scoring that won't come into play. And it holds its card in rank order so in pegging you often can use this to your advantage. Winning against pro 58% over300 games w hints turned off. Pegging better than app by 8 or so points a game. These 2 shortcomings are why win % is so high.
I've played hours and hours of cribbage for years and years with my family. This is an awesome rendition of the game. My only beef is how it counts and refers to some values in a hand. A double run of three is called just that and counts as eight, not three for one run plus three for a second run plus two for a pair. Three of a kind is counted as the way to make three pairs, six, but in Hoyle, it's called a pair totaled for six. If the starter card turned is a jack, it's counted as two "for his heels."
Jeff? Thank-you for continuing to not require any special permissions. And the ads in this free version don't get in the way and yet they are still right there if I want to check something out AND I've never accidentally hit an ad while playing. (I have fat fingers). All that and its a quality game... Best of the free - imho.
The pro level is fun. Not quite as good as a human but close. The discard analyzer reveals some interesting things. It could be improved though if it took into account opponents possible crib contributions. For example, throwing a 5 into an opponents crib is worse than the analyzer predicts because it does not consider the opponents contribution. Also the pro pegger makes some suboptimal plays. Overall this is an excellent game.
Usually can tell in the first few hands who's going to win. Which ever player gets the largest point hands always continues to get them. No chance to ever come back & win.
Okay game for the most part. The help you get when putting cards in the crib seems rigged. Can't see the whole wording or nuberibg in the pop up box while playing. Just okay.

The stats and tools help a beginner understand which choices are best and why. Easy, straightforward, customizable - but with significant detail just a click or two away. Tried other apps and was disappointed, so I'm back here to stay. Learned well enough here to be holding my own when playing an experienced friend real time... though calling tallies and peg board slow me down. Enjoy the game!
