I have the same issue about using skills.. At first, I didn't wanna play the game after installing it.. Because I just saw the character.. And I was like.. "is that a butt.. On wheels?" I finally played it and liked it. I honestly wished the controls were better. I tap and, like what Mike said, I die 70%of the time.

(Edited) After playing a bit more I'm realizing that the double tap for abilities isn't very responsive.. For those that have the breaking kind if abilities (the bird and the one you start off with, for example), you'll die about 70% of the time trying to use them. Fix that and add a bit more polish along with grammar fixes and there'll be five stars!
