About Runt of the Litter

Steal and raise a baby war gryphon! Will you fight dragons together to save the empire, or defy the empire and lead your people to freedom?

"Runt of the Litter" is a 150,000 word interactive fantasy novel by Kelly Sandoval, where your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

The gryphon keepers hold all the power in the Empire of Vaengrea. They make the laws, patrol the borders, and only give gryphon eggs to their chosen heirs. As a poor stable hand, a "thrall," you know you'll never have a chance to prove yourself.

But then, you find the egg. Small, neglected, nudged out of the nest by a disapproving mother. But you can feel warmth growing inside.

Now your gryphon is in terrible danger, both from the other gryphon keepers and from a deadly plague that's wiping out the Empire's gryphons. Can you keep your gryphon safe? Where will you hide your new hatchling? Are you skilled enough to hunt its food or clever enough to steal it? Which of the gryphon keepers can you trust? How will you shape the young gryphon's mind?

Wyrm riders invade from the north on their fire-breathing dragons, the natural enemy of the gryphons. Will you and your gryphon fight in the war, seizing your place among the elite? Or will you defy the empire and lead your fellow thralls to revolution?

Can you keep a runt gryphon safe with the whole world against you? The life of your gryphon, and the fate of an empire, is in your hands.

Brilliant game. The one complaint I have is the gender system seems broken and everyone after a certain point is zer or zir

Was a beautiful and addicting read. It was too short i thought though. However, that could be due to the fact that i could not stop reading for even a second. Overall well done i really enjoyed it.

Decent story. I wish that the ending/epilogue could be different for each path though. They're mostly the same

I would be rating this three stars for the short story it is and the rushed lackluster ending but I cannot in good judgement do so. I have had it with Choice of Games' staff pandering to the LGBT groups especially in such a ridiculous way as is done in this story. "Ze?" "Zir?" It's absolute madness and takes me out of the story every single time they show up. As someone that studied psychology in college I could write a small essay detailing the metal sickness that homosexuality is but this is not the place to do so. Instead, I will only say it is ridiculous to use such gender identifiers in your stories as much as they are childish in the real world. They appeared in the Heroes Rise trilogy to identify only one character and because no one made a fuss about "Hir" in Heroes Rise they were used again in this one. I will admit that it made sense in that series, what with the culture and all but in a setting as this it is simply bad writing and I would go as far as saying that I suspect it is the staff of Choice of Games that demand the inclusion of LBGT characters even if it ruins sections of the stories this webstite sells. SELLS! Choice of Games is turning into some kind of LGBT propaganda machine and it is really starting to grind on me. I want to read a good story that I get to shape not a story that is in turn attempting to shape me instead. Commit to give characters a sex as any self respecting writer would. Redemption Season' reviews, especially on Steam, were as bad as they were for this very reason. Redemption Season is a propaganda piece for the LGBT movement and people recognized this. I tried to enjoy the demo and couldn't which is why I didn't purchase it even though I love the original trilogy. FIX THIS WITH AN UPDATE AND SALVAGE THIS STORY WHILE IT CAN STILL BE SAVED.

Short but good

Ok so I like the game but the implantation of the whole non gender grammar use really broke up the whole flow of reading and understanding the story. Zir, ze, zhe, zim. Just pick a gender and go with it. Ruined reading to a point it was hard and troublesome trying to understand what author was saying. I know why up did it but it doesn't need to be in this kind of story just ruins it.

It could have been an amazing story one of the best cog has had in a while but there's something missing you know the whole choice part like nothing you do matters the only thing that changes is the ending and it hardly relies on anything but your last choice your basically given a story and can chose three ways to end it.

The idea behind the story is good, but it's too short and your choices make little to no difference in the story.

Very fun story and likeable characters. While it didn't feel like what I choose mattered to much in the storyline I still found it enjoyable.
