About Choice of the Petal Throne

In the Empire of the Petal Throne™, will you find glory, or a knife in your back?

"Choice of the Petal Throne" is a 124,000-word interactive fantasy novel by Danielle Goudeau, where your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based--without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

M.A.R. Barker's world of Tékumel™ is a fantasy universe like no other, where South American, Middle Eastern, and Indian cultures collide. The princes and princesses of the Tsolyáni empire vie for their father's mystical Petal Throne, tearing the nation apart with civil war and political intrigues.

As a captain in one of their armies, will you play as male or female, gay straight or bi? A brave and forthright soldier, a hedonistic intriguer with a heart of gold, or scheming double agent?

• Adventure in Tékumel, the first published RPG setting.
• Balance conflicting loyalties amidst a civil war.
• Play multiple times and see how your fate changes.
• Fight for your prince with sword-craft, strategy, or sorcery.
• Are you forthright or devious, kind, or brave?
• Play as male or female, gay, straight, or bisexual.

Honestly, don't undetstand half the words, but its all good.lol

Perhaps it's just me, but I found it incredibly difficult to become immersed in this game, due almost solely to the dialogue. I appreciate the authenticity the author tried to create, but they used so many made up or unknown words, I found myself having to stop every few pages to look something up. I gave up on it, without beating it.

T70%
by T####:

The story itself is good. However, it is not worth the price asked. The story ends a bit abruptly, having certainly enough plot left to continue. It also seems to have rather set endings, making the choices rather insignificant. If it had been longer, with more to it, I would have enjoyed it far more. Plus, the twins seem to be pointless, and though gender for your character is chosen by you, it still feels as if you should be male.

Alright so when I scroll through the reviews there is a divide between wether the ending is rushed or not. So I will tell you my opinion on the matter. It is rushed. For the simple reason that the game failed to meet its promise. So I rejected to marry my arranged spouse in order to save her from politics, then the elders of my clan promise me another arranged spouse if I came back from a war with glory, and I did exactly that, but what did the game gave me? Just thanks from my comrades and nothing, the game just ended, bam, with me being left without no spouse whatsoever. Ironically the game said in the beginning that you can have more than one spouse but ehh, lies. For a 124k words, not worth it.

Possibly the best solo RPG I have played. Immersive and true to Barker's vision. You are challenged to make the choices a Tsolyani would.

I loved it, I just wish it hadn't been so short. And that ending?! What was that?

This is another game I believe is best the first time through. It got stale after the second playthrough, but was a great story with some variation in endings.

C70%
by C####:

This didn't feel rushed at all. I greatly enjoyed playing out many iterations of the story, trying to find all of the accomplishments scattered throughout the game. Definitely for those who enjoy "Endless Quest" adventures, but this one's a bit more adult. An excellent primer to Tekumel culture and society.

R70%
by R####:

Very short and poorly written. The author makes no effort to explain foreign vocabulary through context; I'm having to stop the story on almost every screen to go to the glossary and look words up. The glossary is also split into three different pages for some reason, making it even more inconvenient. If you already know all the language from this universe give it a shot but even with constant interruptions I finished the game in less than a few hours.

It's often said that Professor Barker's world of Tékumel is too complex and esoteric to be understood and enjoyed by most people, but this excellent game is a fine argument against that lazy dismissal. Lots of detail and colour without being needlessly picayune, yet it also avoids the trap of over-explaining everything and ruining the tale. Contrary to some of the reviews I found plenty of play here with a very satisfying ending, far from abrupt and very much in keeping with the overall tone. Recommended.

I was very involved in the story but felt disappointed with the ending and it just ruined the whole story for me.

Interesting plot twist

This is my favorite COG by far. It made me invest in my character, the relationship she had with all around her, and her ultimate destiny. Writing was good. Lengthy. Like a true novel where you're the central chct. Negs: some passages are really long on one page, endings leave you wanting more (it's not over! More), no sequel as far as I know. But it was so rich and action packed and romantic and exactly what an interactive novel should be. Not even the tropey parts felt tropey. Good job

P70%
by P####:

I don't care what anybody says the ending was terrible it did no justice for the rest of the full and in-depth story. The whole time while I read I felt so involved, but I didn't even realise I finished the story until I was on the Subscrice for future stories page. It was such a good story ruined by a kick in the pants, no substance, piece of crap ending. It did have a saving grace, the ride to the ending is fun, but be prepared for disappointment when you finish.

R70%
by R####:

A little bit disappointed. The premise is good, but executed quite poorly. There were a few parts which didn't make sense, and it came to something of an abrupt end. I didn't get emotionally invested in this game, like I have in the others I've played.

L70%
by L####:

I was almost put off from buying the game by all the reviews saying how the ending comes from nowhere but after taking the risk I do not regret it. The game builds up the final chapter well and if you've played enough choice of games you can tell the ending is coming. Overall I enjoyed it and hope for a sequel.

K70%
by K####:

tbh I was really taken in by the story, but as what many other reviews have mentioned, the ending is a sort of bitch slap to the reader when the main character still has a ways to go in his military career. alot of potential for expansion, but the chance wasn't fully taken advantage by the author. it was a fun read nonetheless

K70%
by K####:

I enjoyed the story, but I found the ending to be abrupt and sudden. As if I had been sprinting, then ran around a corner and smacked face first into a brick wall. Other than that, great job.

K70%

Feel dissappointed because it end so sudden.

K70%

As say the others didn't understand some parts but still worth a read through

One of the best interactive novels I've found. So many choices and possible achievements. I love it :)

K70%

I loved it. Wished there were more choice games like this one. My only problem is that it ends so quick. You could finish the game in 30 minutes. If you're a fast reader. But besides that I recommend playing this game.

One of the best so far. Lots of history. Long story. Interesting. Just like lords of aswick n wayward university.

P70%
by P####:

As someone else said, the ending is similar to other choice of games, like black cat, for instance. A little quick, but you will know when it comes. It's not totally out of the blue, though it definitely leaves you wanting more.

Awesome storyline. Very engaging!!

My least fav of choice of games. The "unique" world just feels like an americanised illusion of india. Where the author is too interested in showing how well they know a foreign culture. The world says its deep and uses indian names for its terminology but you never get to experience anything. You go about your business and the story seems to end just as it starts

V70%

wonderful start but the story lost all its steam - seems to me that the writer completly lost interst

If you know Tekumel you will love this. If you don't I advise you to check this out, best fantasy world ever. More please!

D70%

This game has one of the most original worlds I've seen in quite some time. Instead of another generic Tolkien clone, this world is a place that is both somewhat familiar, yet totally alien at the same time.

D70%
by D####:

It was very good, but the ending kind of just showed up iut if nowhere. Left me kind of disappointed.

D70%
by D####:

Since the first time I saw the single sequence that was entered into the IF comp, I was hooked. The thought of another author that rivalled Tolkien was intoxicating and it led me to be firmly hooked into the universe that is Tekumel. After all these years of waiting, this story does not disappoint and I highly recommend it to all who are seeking their next adventure or are looking to explore alternatives to the more traditional high fantasy authors.
