About Choice of Alexandria

Can your steam-powered inventions save the ancient Library of Alexandria? Will you sacrifice the library to protect the city? Or will you protect the future king Ptolemy IV instead?

"Choice of Alexandria" is an interactive novella by Kevin Gold, author of "Choice of Robots." Your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based--90,000 words, without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

The year is 245 BCE; you’re a heroic polymath librarian, invited to Alexandria to tutor prince Ptolemy IV. Coach the prince in the Olympics--or help him ditch the Olympics to show his art and poetry there instead.

Or disregard your tutelage to focus on inventions instead! With the help of Archimedes and Euclid, you can discover the steam engine, the germ theory of disease, or even robotic automata, thousands of years ahead of schedule.

Will you deplete the libraries of other cities to enrich your own? Achieve popularity for your scientific inventions, or protect the legacy of the empire? Will Ptolemy IV grow up hedonistic and selfish, or wise and just? Will you be ransomed by the pirate queen Nefertari, or can you win her over with your silver tongue?

Change the course of history in "Choice of Alexandria!"

• Play as a brilliant inventor, a gifted speaker, or a life-saving doctor
• Make great discoveries while protecting Prince Ptolemy IV from manipulators at court
• Save famed mathematicians Archimedes and Euclid from untimely deaths
• Based on the real life of Eratosthenes, ancient genius who calculated the size of the Earth
• Save the Great Library and invent the steam engine two thousand years early!

Definitely gonna try it!

The choices matter very much in this game. I found myself wanting to build inventions that would progeess and future and yet I also wanted to prevent Sosibious from corrupting Ptolemy IV. I was pleasantly surprised at Mark's appearance at one of the endings, mainly because he was my favourite character in Choice of Robots.

by M####:

Played through four times and can comfortably say that this story is too short, and most of the choices too obvious in their outcomes. Character reactions were also abrupt which makes the story feel rushed. Choice of Robots is a much better game by the same author.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be paid, but don't advertise as being free unless the entire game is free. At least acknowledge it on the store rather than in game after we've already wasted time on the download.

Not nearly as good as Choice of Robots which I love, felt short and just honestly not that interesting. Very disappointed.

B70%

The story and the plot is awesome. But only complaint is that it's bit short. Still no regrets. Well done. Thank you for making this. God bless you.

This "freebie" is a teaser that takes all of 5 minutes to play through. Don't bother unlessyou're prepared to fork over $3 for the actual app.

The game reminded me of one of my all-time favourite games - Choice of Robots. Turns out they were written by the same person! Really enjoyable, your choices do impact the storyline significantly, and I see a lot of potential with this one. It's not quite as deep or in-the-feels as Robots, though. However I do look forward to more games from the writer. Perhaps something with a Victorian or Steampunk theme? ;) wink wink

This game is short, yes. But the story is very good and the choices you make are many and matters. The choices you makes really change the story a lot and different choices will make a totally different one. It's main flaw is that it's made by the author of "choice of robot" which is longer and, I find, slightly better overall (and I prefert the universe of choice of robots too). I recommend it : If you don't mind a very short game or if you are prepared to it, you'll have a wonderful experience.

Sometimes it's a hit, sometimes it's. a dud. Very linear story left me pretty disapointed. Would not have paid 4 bucks for it.

D70%

It cost WAY to much. 3 bucks and it wasn't even that long. At all. Make is like a dollar or 2

I ended up learning some history from this game. Also, I love everything by the authour

R70%

Great fun, as a fan of Choice of Robots and other CoG. Doesn't nearly have the depth of Choice of Robots, as it's much shorter, but it at least touches on a lot of ground and is a fun, if whimsical, alternate history jaunt.

K70%

I loved the story so much, it was so engaging and short that I played it all through twice but was still surprised with all of my choices being so affective! I would recommend.

O70%

It's a very good concept, and I love it immensely, I just wish I could have more of the story without paying anything. Oh well.

Didn't understand anything

Intruiging mix of history and almost steam punk technology. Lots of meaningful choices, and an amazing epilogue.

It's OK

Keep up the good work, man. Loved Choice of Robots, this one is just as great! And, I actually managed to master the Skills besides Mechanics, which I discovered was more my mistake than yours. A solid game, overall!

R70%
by R####:

Bought this because of how much I loved Choice of Robots. Unfortunately this does not reach the same heights. The game is very short, the characters weakly developed, and most importantly the choices lead to unpredictable, even illogical, outcomes. Stats are limited and have too few opportunities to raise. Then a non-ending time skip to something completely unrelated? Okay, whatever. Intriguing concept, but ultimately I'd pass on this.

It took a few playthroughs (and I haven't gotten everything yet), but this tale has many different options and stories within it... A masterpiece.

Greek romance theme is awesome. The story's plot is smooth and interesting. Good work, author. Hope it will be longer, or at least another sequal..

The Arthur who made choice of robots! This is going to be good♡

G70%

There are a lot of different outcomes for the game, and the effort put in by the maker shows. Was the gender swap of Euclid really necessary, though? I feel that gender swapping didn't add to the story as there wasn't an option to romance her or anything. Euclid's sex didn't even matter, so why should we bother changing it? If all that was desired was a female philosopher (which I suspect is the case) there were quite a few prominent female philosophers both in classical Greece and in the Macedonian era.

G70%
by G####:

While the story does not take long to play, the author makes the choices matter. The range of outcomes (and post-story epilogues) is quite wide. It"s a miniature Choice of Robots, except historical.

F70%

Overall nice game if a bit short.

O70%

It was... Different, but different can be good. I recommend this one highly.

Q70%

Melancholy, challenging, and full of curious bits of knowledge. I expected nothing less from the author of Choice of Robots. Now, to play again!

Q70%
by Q####:

My first impression on completing the game was that it was pretty short. I finished it in nearly 2 hours. Still very well written and does warrant some replays, but I did feel this one was pretty easy to beat. It seems replays might just make some minor changes in terms of your achievements, but I haven't tried yet. Overall very enjoyable.
