avoid spikes is a mobile title where the player flies a bird for as long as they can while avoiding spikes, though hardly in controversy or popularity. The game's core mode has the player flying a bird in a cave, bouncing off of walls and avoiding spikes.

The player has control of a bird. They can tape anywhere on the screen and the bird will flap upward, but it will soon fall back down. The player must use this single input to keep the bird at the desired height. The player has no control of its horizontal movement; the bird will fly towards a wall and bounce off it when it hits, moving back and forth across the screen.

The challenge of the game is keeping the bird away from spikes that appear at random locations on the walls. Every time the bird hits a wall, the spikes on the opposite wall randomly reconfigure and your bird begins to fly towards it. Your score is determined by how many walls you bounce off (and therefore how many sets of spikes you've successfully avoided). The game ends when you collide with a spike, either on one of the walls or on the top or bottom of the screen.

Games are relatively short; a short game of a few points can last only a few seconds. A long game typically lasts about a minute or two.

In addition to avoiding spikes and attempting a high score, the player can also collect colored candies. These candies are the in-game currency and can be used to unlock new birds, which are purely cosmetic modifications. Players can also spend "real life" money to unlock these candies, which is part of the game's freemium model.
