* "It’s basically the rhythm game equivalent of patting your head while rubbing your stomach, and oddly addictive." - Forbes.com

Description:
The rules could not be any more straightforward: tap Up, Down, Left, Right in time to a simple beat.

But these instructions deliver a surprisingly complicated action puzzler which has been described by Guardian writer Steven Poole as "a rhythm-action Stroop Test."

A Stroop Test is often used in clinical investigation to measure selective attention, cognitive flexibility and processing speed by asking participants to read out colours written in different inks. Up, Down, Left, Right introduces the concept of routine which is then mixed on the fly to create a fast-paced, absorbing high-score game.

Up, Down, Left, Right challenges players to maintain a simple beat – roughly one every half second – tapping in the sequence Up, Down, Left, Right on a simple keyboard. As play progresses, blocks fall from the top of the screen at a steady pace. These blocks will change the sequence by replacing one key with another – keeping three as normal. Failure to conform to the beat immediately resets the score.

It's a game which requires concentration and reactions. Beat your friends, challenge the world.

Up, Down, Left Right is games industry veteran and One Life Left co-presenter Simon Byron’s first videogame.

Game History & Updates

What's Changed
Removed bug where adverts could appear in the middle of the tutorial - sorry about that. You should only see two adverts per play session - one on the title screen and one when you return to it. Apologies for the errors in earlier versions.
I know some Samsung devices are having the occasion issue, too - I will continue to look into it.
Thank you so much for playing and leaving your feedback. This is my first game, and I'm learning all the time.

My favourite thing about this is definitely the music, that's really cool! Far too many adverts, though. Maybe a "microtransaction" to remove adverts for 69p?

R70%
by R####:

I love the game, but why is it that my high score on leader board not updated when I get a new one? I have a good internet connection.

S70%
by S####:

Once I got my head around the concept I couldn't put this down. Pretty good for a free game.

For some reason I have to press and hold every button for half a second or it won't register. Not only tires out my thumb but destroys the flow of the game as well.

Lol more games <3 ×3 also waffles are awesome. :)

This is the gaming equivalent of patting your head and rubbing your stomach. Very challenging but highly addictive.

Sound but no picture blackscreen but no game

I70%

No not the game, the full screen adverts blocking progress in the game every 30 seconds! [update]My ad issue is just with the tutorial section, main game is fine. Score amended to take that into account.

Lovely black screen with no game what so ever... Dunno how to reply but version 4.1.2

A very simple looking game but rattles your brain to the core. It's very addictive once you get a hang of the game. I bet you can't resist it after you understand the concept. Good job creators/developers.

Best / most maddening thing I've played since the sadly unavailable Rollercoaster Racers

Really cool!

Q70%

Head scratching action puzzler, with an instant restart mechanic, means it's very hard to put down. My productivity has certainly decreased since getting this.

W70%
by W####:

I really like the feel of the game but the adverts all over the place and even popping up a full screen advert in the middle of the tutorial is far too much. Hopefully there will be a paid version without all the intrusive adverts

Initially a wee bit of a mindcuss to get a hang of, the game rewards revisits and is a welcome distraction on long (or short) commutes. Simple, ingenious, compelling, frustrating, ace. Full disclosure: I am married to the creator but I wasn't so keen on that card game he made tbh.

W70%
by W####:

But that's probably just me still training my brain - addictive stuff anyway.

Q70%
by Q####:

"Up, down, left, FU- Up, down, left, FU- Up, down, left, right, (Ha!) Up, down, left, right, Up, down, left... FURGHARKKKGGLLE!"

Q70%
by Q####:

When you first play you might be forgiven for never having a second play. But once it clicks it's hugely addictive. Its simplicity belies a need for intense concentration. I imagine battling natural rhythm and repetition must be a bit like learning to play the drums, which makes me want to learn to play the drums. Can you get free drum kits supported by advertising?

Q70%
by Q####:

Yet so challenging

N70%
by N####:

Requires the left part, right part and several hitherto unidentified additional parts of the brain to be working in complete harmony.

C70%
by C####:

a simple but very hard game - this is a good thing.
