FACT: 2013 is the 100th anniversary of the crossword puzzle. On December 21, 1913, Arthur Wynne, a journalist from Liverpool, England, published a "word-cross" puzzle in the New York World that embodied most of the features of the genre as we know it. This puzzle is frequently cited as the first crossword puzzle, and Wynne as the inventor. Later, the name of the puzzle was changed to "crossword"

DID YOU KNOW?

In 1944, Allied security officers were disturbed by the appearance, in a series of crosswords in The Daily Telegraph, of words that were secret code names for military operations planned as part of Operation Overlord. "Utah" (the code name for one of the landing sites) appeared in a puzzle on May 2, 1944. Subsequent puzzles included the landing site "Omaha" and "Mulberry"; the secret artificial harbours.

On June 2, four days before the invasion, the puzzle included both "Neptune" (the naval operations plan) and "Overlord". The author of the puzzles, a schoolteacher named Leonard Dawe, was interviewed. The investigators concluded that the appearance of the words was not an attempt to pass messages. According to a former crossword editor of The Daily Telegraph, in 1984 a former student of Dawe's claimed that he had picked up the words from soldiers' conversations around the army camps, and included them when helping Dawe to choose words to fill crossword grids. Some cryptologists for Bletchley Park were selected after doing well in a crossword-solving competition.

What are users saying about Newspaper Crossword Puzzles

X70%
by X####:

Navigating the puzzles is unnecessarily annoying, and you won't even be able to download half of them. Not worth it.

X70%
by X####:

Great cross word puzzle game, works well so far EXCEPT when I start typing I can no longer hit ENTER on my native keyboard to go to the next clue; upon doing so the icon on the to left turns blue and I can only remedy this by manually clicking on the board.

L70%
by L####:

It's a bit frustrating that after paying for this app, I discover that the NY Times puzzle is just reposted every week, instead of new one being mades available. And now it crashes every time I try to open the app up so I can play crossword puzzles, can't seem to get any help for fixing the problem.

X70%
by X####:

Ok, getting tired of crashing on rotation. I have had to do many puzzles twice due to this bug, and it's creating serious rage. Fix the bug.

J70%
by J####:

It doesn't actually give you all the crosswords it advertises. 1 LA Times crossword. Ever.

X70%
by X####:

The description & settings make this app seem like it would be great. Reality is some puzzles are not available while one, inexplicably is the same puzzle every week.

X70%
by X####:

Keeps downloading current People Magazine puzzle even tho i've done it. Won't let you tap the current word (at least in Portrait) to move the cursor to the first square in the word - you have to tap the next or previous clue, then tap the clue on which you were working. How lame.

C70%
by C####:

DO NOT DOWNLOAD! This is the same app as Shortyz which is free. This is a scam!

C70%
by C####:

A little clunky but it's got a ton of sources, including my favorites!

X70%
by X####:

Free app far superior. Waste of money

X70%
by X####:

Locked up my tablet.

R70%
by R####:

you are drivin me nuts. I should be able to choose across OR down on whole puzzle

X70%
by X####:

Stopped working in one day

C70%
by C####:

Only one puzzle shows up that is a challenge, and that's the Saturday stumper. I've been doing newspaper crossword puzzles for years by pen, and even USA Today throws in a stumper every once in awhile. On this app, I can blow through every USA Today puzzle in a couple of minutes. It seems like it just scans puzzles you can find online for free anyway. The interface is good, but please bring more challenging puzzles.

X70%
by X####:

The view is terrible, you can barely tap on the square you want. I've seen better views. Then to make it even worse when you rotate the device it gets extra small! I want my money back.

X70%
by X####:

I have a free crossword app (from amazon I think) that has the same puzzles, plus a few more. I thought even the little bit of change I gave to this game would get me more puzzles, not less..

D70%
by D####:

I had this app on my galaxy s5 and now have it on the galaxy s6 edge...the crosswords no longer fill the whole screen, they get stuck in the top left corner and are only 3/4 across the screen. .boxes are too small to try and tap and start filling an answer..tried spreading thumb and pointer finger to zoom but it only expands so big and then gets stuck in same place

J70%
by J####:

I love this app, but have 2 complaints: 1st, one puzzle--New York Times Classic--is the EXACT SAME PUZZLE at least once a week. Always pulls the one from 11/25/98. I've memorized most answers. 2nd, app has settings to choose puzzles to download daily. I've chosen all puzzles available in the list, but only get 2-5 a day, and NEVER the Washington Post crossword, which I was hoping to get and know there was at least 1 per Sunday, if not in weekdays. If you're going to let us choose, you should deliver.

R70%
by R####:

Boxes are too small. No clue as to why it only covers the top left portion of the screen, leaving unused black space

Has my favorite daily newspaper crossword: LA Times

Q70%
by Q####:

Originally loved this app, but after a phone reset and reinstall it no longer downloads crosswords from multiple sources. I'm only able to get one crossword a day. I also have my NYTimes subscription entered and those aren't pulled in either. Not worth paying for. UPDATE: Changed phones to the HTC One M9 and decided to give this app another shot. Now it repeatedly crashes upon open. Save your money and download Shortyz instead. Same exact layout, more sources, less issues, and free.

I70%
by I####:

Works well on my tablet but on the S6 the largest the puzzle gets is unusably small.

K70%
by K####:

Does well at what it says it's going to do, but several puzzle sources don't download and I can't get the NYT source to work. If those two things were fixed, or someone could tell me what I was doing wrong, this would be five stars.

Q70%
by Q####:

DO NOT DOWNLOAD! This is the same app as Shortyz which is free. This is a scam!

G70%
by G####:

All of the puzzles do not download. I only get three options and once they're done I have to wait until the next day.

L70%
by L####:

Occasionally, you get lucky and pressing a square on the puzzle let's you move to that clue but generally, you need to navigate the puzzle using the arrow keys (as if there is no touch screen interface). Would have been a great puzzle if this were 1998. Samsung S6 Edge)

R70%
by R####:

I have the required subscription but the app won't download the puzzles. This was the only reason I purchased the app!

R70%
by R####:

The app works well on my phone, but in 2.5 months, it's given me the same NYT puzzle 11 times. ELEVEN. I want to work on new puzzles, not ones I've memorized...

R70%

This is what Shorty's crosswords used to be before their terrible update.

At least Shortyz is free. This one has the exact same bug that I hate. I thought maybe a paid version would have some fixes. Sigh!

A70%
by A####:

Does not fill screen, even when full scree is used. Word clues too small- not to scale either. Double tapping to zoom doesn't always work. Needs work

R70%
by R####:

Just kept shutting down when I opened it and can't seem to get a refund

Y70%
by Y####:

Crashes when attempting to download puzzles from 90% of the sources

I70%

No latimes download

Q70%
by Q####:

I feel like this app used to work a lot better. It doesn't grab all of the crosswords it says it will, and my NY Times subscription doesn't work. Given that the NYT hasn't released an Android app, I was hoping this would solve that issue, but it simply doesn't download any of them.

A70%
by A####:

The App isn't downloading all the puzzles that it claims it will, only two or three. Incredibly disappointing! But I am enjoying doing the ones that do download every day.

Q70%
by Q####:

Can't get the NY Times crossword even though we have a subscription. And navigation is buggy, UI not intuitive.

K70%
by K####:

Galaxy Note 3. Worked for a few days and then stopped downloading puzzles. Was very good while it worked. If this can be fixed I will upgrade to 5 stars.

K70%
by K####:

When I tap my screen to highlight a new blank space, when trying to start on a new clue, the highlight won't respond even after repeated taps on the screen. Very disappointed! :( uninstalling.
