About ASA's Sailing Challenge

Ideal for those students studying for their ASA 101 certification. Or for any old salt looking for a challenge without getting wet!

ASA’s Sailing Challenge includes six fun, easy-to-use modules that unlock the mysteries of sailing - Learn Points of Sail, Apparent Wind, Sail Trim, Tacking and Jibing, Rules of the Road and Docking. Then, put it all together when you sail around a course against the clock in the Sailing module.

This sailing app combines the most innovative thinking in the digital education field with the American Sailing Association's experience in teaching sailing to create a game that lets players climb aboard, take control of the tiller in one hand and the mainsheet in the other, and sail off on a virtual sea of fun. When the ASA says the fun starts here, we really mean it!

For help creating the Sailing Challenge app, ASA turned to longtime sailing enthusiast, visionary and founder of Atari, Nolan Bushnell. Bushnell’s new educational software development company, Brainrush, worked with ASA to develop this breakthrough educational video sailing game, using a teaching technique Bushnell refers to as “gamefication”. He says, “ASA’s Sailing Challenge combines video gaming technology and educational software, incorporating real brain science in a way that will fundamentally change how people learn how to sail.”

I have sailed and raced for a big part of my life. This is a nice teaching tool. It also fun. The issue is that on my Nexus 9 tablet running 7.1.1. the latest upgrade has turned this into a great App. I have changed my review and give it 5 stars. It run very very nicely.

Bought this so I could start learning the basics of sailing. I now feel comfortable with basic terminology and understanding how the boat works with the wind. The free sailing at the end is fun in itself even! My friends like to mess around on it too, so that is a good sign!

Eh. Had much higher hopes for this. Doesn't really teach anything that a beginner wouldn't already know... It's incredibly short and doesn't have much content or knowledge at all. Pretty shocked this costs money. Probably wouldn't use this if it were free.

The game is great but it's just sooo laggy it's completely unplayable. That's saying something because my phone can play like 99% of games downloaded. Optimize please!

I thought it felt very natural as far as bringing the boat up to speed, sail luff, and rudder to wind vector calculations for a phone game. Definitely worth the few bucks to learn basic handling on & try to get your times down. A tiller/wheel option would be nice. Also, a m.o.b. drill would be good to include. Thanks & Nice job.

This is a great app for someone- such as myself- wanting to learn and starting out with little knowledge. It's fun and easy to understand. It also seems like it'd be good to brush up on things. I only wish it had more features, now!

Very well made, very informative with super gaming style interaction.I have not sailed since Boy Scouts so this was a great starter/refresher course. Excited to get started in an actual sailboat with an ASA instructor.

Very nice app, controls are pretty smooth. A nice thing to pass the time while watching the rain in Oregon.

Overall pretty good simulator. Perhaps developers might further improve it by including sea states for the off shore folks.

The button at the lower left corner of my phone (for going back one screen) seems to be disabled when this app is running. Also, this app only works in portrait view please provide a landscape interface for when I turn the phone on its side. I think this app is missing the hand of a skilled professional developer. The modules themselves seem excellent. I would think that ASA could afford to give this app away. I'm sure it draws new members.

Controlling the rudder with your thumb on the screen eventually results in it no longer sliding easily due to the oils in your finger. This would be a MUCH improved experience if you could just tilt your phone left or right for steering. Maybe even tilt the phone forward and aft for sail trim. Would be much more natural. See an airplane app called "Flight Pilot" for an example of the phone tilt controlling (in their case) roll and pitch. Also, how about some heeling for close hauled? Great graphics!

I was really hoping the app would help me with all parts of my ASA 101 quiz. Most of the app falls flat. "Points of Sail"module is great, you guys did a great job with that. After a few days I was able to quickly identify what tack I was on. "Apparent wind"module could use a bit more interactivity. Change up the wind direction each time? "Right away" module. I wish this was random with the types. As it works now you are provided the question and then react to the answer. I dont feel like it helped me decided what was the right course in a real world situations.

I've been sailing for more than 30 years and teach sailing. Steering should be done like a tiller or at least that should be an option. In most modules it is difficult to back out if you picked the wrong module. I did use it to help one student having difficulty with points of sail.

This app covers the basics of points of sail and right of way. There are a couple of courses you can sail through and that's about it. This is appropriate for someone who is just learning to sail. This app is useless for an experienced sailor. I went through the entirety of the content in 20 minutes.

Great for learning the basics. Game controls are a bit unresponsive sometimes. Add a parts of the boat and a free sail, instead of the tours, and I will give it 5 stars.

It would be nice to maybe involve some races or something in the end. Great app but feels short lived for 4 bucks

Great app for sailors at all experience levels. Rudder response (time lag) and sensitivity are crafted well to match real world conditions. This can be frustrating at first .... until one realizes how important a sailors touch on the helm can be especially in tricky situations. Practice here first, avoiding a buoy, leeward obstruction or another boat ... while learning how to anticipate where and when your true course, inertia and speed are likely to run you into trouble. This really cannot be overstated. Get used to oversteer here. It just takes time. I know we have plenty of time to talk and take photos when appropriate to the conditions. So lets learn how to dock at useful speeds (ie. 1 to 3 knots) ... and when higher speeds are appropriate to the situation as well. Talk about your real world docking, when to "stand on" and when to practice MOB drills (using the red square as your imaginary MOB)!

It would be much better if you could just sail where ever you'd like rather than following a course.
