About SpellGenie
Spelling defines the level of literacy in your child. If you have to spell the future of your child correctly, right spelling is the apt foundation. Time is short; there is a lot to be spelled, so start now!
What does right spelling portend in a child, why is it important to anchor them in the accurate usage of language, what are the potential pitfalls of ignoring this during early childhood? Often overlooked, these are the exact questions that we have addressed through years of research and experience in the field of spelling education and changed the lives of thousands of children. Read on………
Many of you are not just parents…but hold important roles in firms. Imagine a day when you are beset with inappropriate language usage in all the mails, reports and memos that you receive. You would feel irritated and even frustrated, having to review documents, marking out and editing errors and ineffective language. Definitely a thought crosses your mind – which school did this bloke go to and how did he/she make it thus far. Marilyn Vos Savant once said “When our spelling is perfect, it is invisible. But when it’s flawed, it prompts strong negative associations”. Wrong spelling not only evidences deeper disarray in language learning, but also portrays a very imprecise side to our character….a side that cares less…..a side that will make us make less of our life (appreciate life less?).
Let us now turn to the impression of a well written letter or email that your nephew or niece sent you. Great care had been taken to get all the words spelt right, used in the right context and formatted well. You are proud to show it to your family, read it out aloud to friends…..you would often comment that it is indeed their upbringing that brings about this quality of writing. Good spelling and right usage from children should be feted…..since it is becoming a rarer sight these days….days of using Short Messaging Services (SMS), cryptic face-book (FB) updates and compressed twittering is compelling our children to argue the virtue of short is sweet! Children are not to be blamed….they have just not been exposed to the joy of learning correct spelling….in ways that combine fun with learning….using innovative techniques that embed spelling rules deep in their consciousness….bringing to the fore their potential to create unique ways of expression….be it colours, words, numbers or pictures that could aid them in their learning of spelling techniques.
Correct spelling gives us confidence to speak and write our thoughts vividly. That early confidence builds a great foundation for your child to be an effective communicator….a virtue that is valued most in the world of today….and will be valued even more in the world of tomorrow.
At every turn in their life, when you expect them to compete effectively, spelling their own future success, you will not be worried as a parent if you have made that investment today. Be it admission into a graduate school of repute abroad, or preparing an arresting resume for that coveted job, or be it even penning their intimate feelings for their love interest…..words pave the way to success….and words spelt wrong.....need we say any further!
As parents we indeed have a role to play today, looking out for potential opportunities to reinforce the virtues of right spelling in our children, during the daily routines of the day, during bed time story telling, during family conversations…..But let us ask ourselves, do we redeem ourselves well during these opportunities. Rue not any further, help is near.
Spell Genie has created a unique methodology for instilling spelling confidence in children by tapping into their multiple intelligences. By harnessing their potential and their desire to compete and out-spell each other, we have fostered fun in learning spelling rules. So much so that every child leaving our weekly class eagerly looks forward to the next class even as they step out.
