Roberts Multimedia Birds of SA for Android
Lots of work must have gone into this app. It is a must for any bird enthusiast in Southern Africa. It contains extremely detailed information for every single bird found in Southern Africa, even the bird calls.
I couldn't for the longest time download this app, recently I tryed again and HASZAR it worked. Thank you so much. Thumbs up Safari Live fans
Hey Guy love your app but why can't I zoom in on any of the pics? Am I doing something wrong or can't it be done?
I'm very Happy with my choice to go with the Roberts guide. It would be fantastic if the app allowed you to include your own photos with your bird count list. When i loaded it on the android it said the purchased package could be loaded on 2 devices where do i find contact help details.
Bit buggy in general but works on most phones. Great to always have a bird book when you need it.
Wonderful app!! So much detail, especially also the eggs and great photos!! So much information! Also really great are the birds' names in different languages!! Thank you for that!!
Excellent detailed bird app. Great bird calls extensive data
Nice
Now you can't retreive the bird page from the field guide since the update. Field guide is now useless
Awesome! Understand it must have taken an incredible amount of work to put together. But....having a hard time transferring it to my new phone.
So VERY VERY dissapointed with the upgrade
No I get a message that says " the data license has been superceded. How do you get it that you ask R500 for something and it decides not to work. Ok, so with some help its finally working after deleting every noticable trace of the app and installing it again.
Brilliant app. I particularly like the option to search for names in other languages such as Afrikaans names. Unfortunately had to download on 3G, the whole 1GB twice. Is there a way to search all birds at a certain location? I find it difficult to zoom in to each individual bird only to find it is unlikely to be that particular species.
This is a brilliant app. I have used others in the past but found they lacked sufficient detail. This app does it all. The photographs and sound are excellent. The app is also very intuitive to use and the "My location"is a bonus. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in birds and bird identification. Sure beats carrying the book around.
Verry boring to try and identify birds from drawings , on your app before you buy it it seems like real pics why reply if you don't help and now after using it for a day it says you're app has been superseded please help Omg this seems like a rip of I NEED HELP
One question though, if you have poor network coverage the app does not work. I thought because the data are on your phone or tablet it will not be network dependant but it seems so? Can the developer help with this issue, please?
Firstly the user friendliness and ease to identify birds is fantastic on this app. Plus I struggled getting my data downloaded and one email to the developer and it was all sorted. Thank you very much!
After a number of installations the app is still missing tonnes of info. Really poorly designed. Wish I'd spent half the money on the Sasol version for twice the functionality. Buy at your peril.
Extremely disappointing! Some of the illustrations are really bad. Searches are pathetic - entered my coordinates and the app listed Penguins (and many other species) as birds in my area! Unless I am sorely mistaken we do not have Penguins on the KZN South Coast. Sasol app is way, way better and easier to use. Sasol app shows illustrations of female and juvenile whereas the Roberts app only shows the head of the female - how are you supposed to identify a bird just from it's head??. At the price this is definitely not a good purchase.
Excellent app. A must-have for birders in Southern Africa. Much, much better than carrying a book around. Given all the info, photos and sounds, it is relatively easy to forgive the small glitches (and price). This app really has the potential to substantially improve one's birding abilities and knowledge. Well done!
Have been using the app for a couple of years. Worth every cent. I struggle a little to sync my list across devices via drive though. Update my lists manually across devices. Still an awesome app.
Roberts is possibly the best option BUT since I was unable to get it to open while in Zimbabwe (with or without a network connection) it was a major disappointment. I trialed it while in the US and it was terrific so I know it runs on my phone. Tech support did offer several possible resolutions but none worked. Bottom line is I needed it in the field and it wasn't there.
There is no data after i downloaded the app. What is wrong? The data is missing. Please dont ignore me! I bought this app but cant use it. Yes they replied, but they dont solved the problem!
I have been using the app for a while on my phone and happy with it. Recently put it on a tablet and it is brilliant! Beautiful clear and high quality pictures. Had some hiccups with installation and the support service was excellent.
Second problem with this app. When I open it, it then closes itself and gives me a message, "application licence failed. Enable Internet and try again."
I was a bit sceptical after reading some reviews, but the installation (30 min max) went flawless on my SS A3. Looks very comprehensive and well rounded off. I love the bird sounds, something you can not completely get from the book.
Birdsound ID would be nice then I dont need to go rhrough whole list of area birds to id the sound
Each time I try open it says "data check error. Check Internet connection and retry" I'm on full Internet connection. Have tried to reinstall a number of times now
I have all 3 versions of this app, iPhone, PC and Android and my wife and I enjoy them tremendously. After my Samsung phone was stolen, I replaced it with a similar phone. Initially I had re-installing problems but was quickly sorted out by the Gibbon Multimedia Support Staff. For a while I used the Android Version on both my phone (regular use) and tablet (very seldom) without any hick-ups. Last weekend I got a "Data License Error. The Data License for this device has been superceded. Please use your current device" pop-up on my phone. Am I not allowed to use the same Android version on 2 of my devices and if so, how do I get it back on my phone only? Thanks.
The app is really very good. All the information you could want. It is comprehensive. I have had it fail on me 3 times though, and with trust lost, I could never travel without the book too, as a backup.
Have just bought the app. But it wont download the 1g of data. Says its downloading but no progress shown after half an hour. Surely it should show an error message if unable to download?
I paid and installed the program some time ago but downloading the data was impossible. Tried several time. Unfortunately my tablet got stolen before I had the change to inform you on the problem. Today decided to pay another R500 and install the product on my new tablet. Program downloaded but no sound and other other related info. Sad to see that for the past year you blame all problems on Playstore and shown no need to address these issues yourself.
It seems that there is frequent data license checks. It seems that if one has no internet connection you cannot use the app. However support is super if one will be able to contact them.
This is the second time this year I have tried to download this app. Whilst it looks fantastic, the process and problems are clearly not worth the trouble. Twice now I have paid R500 for a non existent, unusable app. Amazing how fast the money is deducted from my account but getting a refund has been impossible. I emailed Gibbons multi media the first time and unsurprisingly was told Google play are responsible for the refund. Obviously there's no credit in my account! Very poor service! Please refund.
We have of course to applaud the arrival of any birding app in Android, since most of them were only available for iOS until recently (a weird fact, since Android has 80% of users). This app is of course very good and provides everything a birder would need. The moronic faults of extreme license check and limit of two devices have been corrected and so it deserves nothing less than 5 stars (and rest assured, if those critical faults ever return I will change my review to 1 star). However I expect some other, minor, faults to be corrected in future editions: Scrolling of the pictures should be circular, you shouldn't have to scroll all the way back to the bird drawing once you have reached the last photograph; some sounds are corrupt and won't play, at least in my device (eg Eurasian Bittern); the field guide pictures should be zoomable (would help a lot those of us who use the app on a phone); bird sounds provide a time index explaining the different recordings in the sound file, but there is no visible timer to show the seconds elapsed; you can't browse the text or view the photos of a bird while listening to its sounds; etc. I hope these will be corrected in future versions.
Whilst enjoying the app on my tablet, two unsuccessful attempts to download the app on my phone has left me frustrated... No, images, nou sound... "data missing" ... Putting the blame on playstore does not go off well. Please make a plan!?
I see A LOT OF people struggling with the install process, and they all speak similarly of my own experience trying to get the app to work over a period of 3 months. The app magically started working once I removed my negative review here. This is an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. I will be contacting Google regarding the terms and conditions of posting truthful reviews for the sake of ALL PAYING CUSTOMERS. My app has since been working, and if it stops working after this review, I know that you are applying unfair practise developer.
The staff at support are fantastic, I experienced some problems with the download, and their responses were fast and accurate. Greate app, I can recommend this app to anybody. Well done
Have bought & downloaded to tablet. App not picking up data although data downloaded & extracted to SD card. Please help. Very frustrated

Wonderful app! I'm not the most knowledgeable birder, but I have become an avid one now. Easy to use and a great investment. It does struggle to open sometimes and the option to identify calls is a bit tricky, but it has been helpful before.
