Bible Perret-Gentil et Rilliet

Ancien Testament Perret-Gentil (1861), Nouveau Testament Rilliet (1858).

Au milieu du dix-neuvième siècle, deux protestants suisses offraient chacun au monde francophone une nouvelle traduction biblique. Le premier, Auguste Perret-Gentil, pasteur neuchâtelois, avait traduit l'Ancien Testament d'après l'hébreu ; le second, Albert Rilliet, historien de la Réformation, après un labeur considérable de comparaison critique, donnait un Nouveau Testament traduit sur le manuscrit grec dit Vaticanus.

Si aujourd'hui ces deux ouvrages ne sont plus depuis longtemps réédités, ils n'en ont pas moins exercé une certaine influence sur les traductions subséquentes. Leur nouveauté la plus remarquée, et aussi la plus contestée, consistait dans l'éloignement qu'elles osaient prendre avec la version Osterwald, depuis longtemps traditionnelle chez les protestants. Celle de l'Ancien Testament, semblait se rapprocher de la version allemande de De Wette, tandis que celle du Nouveau rompait résolument avec le texte reçu. Il était donc intéressant de les réunir dans un même volume, non seulement pour cette raison historique, mais encore parce que chacune de nos deux traductions possède son charme particulier. L'Ancien Testament de Perret-Gentil, par l'originalité et la bizarrerie de ses tournures, dégage un parfum antique proprement biblique ; la fluidité du Nouveau Testament de Rilliet confirme que c'est un helléniste de renom qui a su faire passer la langue grecque dans un beau français.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, two Swiss Protestant offered to each Francophone world a new Bible translation. The first, Auguste Perret-Gentil, pastor Neuchâtel, had translated the Old Testament from Hebrew, the second Albert Rilliet historian of the Reformation, after considerable work of critical comparison, gave a New Testament translated on Greek manuscript Vaticanus said. If today these two books are not long republished, they have nevertheless exerted some influence on subsequent translations. Their most remarkable novelty, and also the most controversial, was in the distance they dare take the stuff version long traditional among Protestants. That of the Old Testament, seemed closer to the German version of De Wette, while New resolutely broke with the received text. It was therefore interesting to bring together in one volume, not only for this historical reason, but also because each of our two translations has its special charm.
