WannaCry is supposed to use the EternalBlue exploit , which was developed by the US National Security Agency (NSA) to attack computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems. Even though a patch to remove the underlying vulnerability was released on March 14, 2017, delays in applying security updates have left users vulnerable. Microsoft has taken the unusual step of freeing upgrades for unsupported Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and fixes for Windows 8 operating systems.

On May 12, some NHS services had to divert non-critical emergencies, and some ambulances were diverted.
