About OpenSeizureDetector

Open Seizure Detector is an experimental epileptic (tonic-clonic) seizure detector / alert system that utilises a Pebble smart-watch to detect shaking, and raises an alarm for a carer. If the wearer of the watch shakes for 15-20 seconds, the device will produce a warning. If the shaking continues for another 10 seconds it raises an alarm.

The phone app communicates with the pebble smart-watch and provides a web interface that other devices can connect to to receive notifications of seizure events. It can also send SMS (Text) Messages to notify carers that a seizure has been detected and the location of the person affected. The system includes self-checking to make sure it is functioning correctly, and will beep to warn the user of faults to help provide reassurance that it is working.

You need a Pebble Smart Watch or a Pebble Time Smart Watch that is connected to your Android device for OpenSeizureDetector to work.. Note that manufacture of Pebble watches has been discontinued, but this app will continue to work despite this (and pebble watches are still available at the moment). I will introduce support for Android Wear devices and wrist mounted android phones as a replacement for Pebble watches in the future.

It does not use any external web services to detect seizures or raise alarms, so is not dependent on an internet connection to work, and no subscriptions to commercial services are needed.

Please see the Installation Instructions for help with setting up this app.

I recommend subscribing to email updates to the OpenSeizureDetector web site or Facebook Page if you use the app so I can contact users if I find an issue you should know about.

Note that this app is experimental so may not be reliable at the moment, but comments would be appreciated. That said, I have had some positive feedback from users saying that it has detected tonic-clonic seizures reliably, but it has not been subjected to 'proper' qualification testing.

For more details of how this works see the OpenSeizureDetector web site.

Thank you for your hard work! I appreciate your app. I have a question. You guys had fall detection that saved my life several times. Is there any way that will be coming back in an update?

It worked when I had a seizure last week and alerted my wife who was in a different part of our home. I really hope a GPS setting is added very soon as that will boost confidence for users.

A few minor things. App doesn't auto restart on phone reboot. You really want that. Will set manually. Second check if Pebble is connected. Both of those things need to work in case someone forgets to check. Fall detection nice touch. A little sensitive and working on settings. Wish list A false alarm button and an automatic call with prerecorded msg Future issue fitbit just bought pebble. Nice little app otherwise.

Question only! Will it work for pebble 2? Or older pebble watch or... any pebble watches?

Installed this app to help detect night time seizures for my son. It's been able to pick up the mild tremors from his current med wean. Thank you for developing an application on an affordable platform for families like ours. We have two children with epilepsy and purchasing another Emfit was not only going to be an issue economically, but it was not the right technology for our second child.

It would be appreciated if the developers release a version for Android wear as currently there are no seizure detection apps for Android wear. I have an LG Watch Urbane and it does have an accelerometer, so it would be fairly easy to implement this on Android wear. Android wear smart watches are becoming more and more prevalent and many of us enjoy the extra features that they include. So those of us who already own them and have seizures have been left out and forced to buy another smart watch for this.

I have been testing this app as Graham has Created and updating it. It must be understood by anyone downloading this and using it, it is a one person and one test person show. This was done for all to use because we share the fact that our children have nocturnal seizures. I was on my path with one and Graham on his path. His is the most affordable option currently available. To make this affordable ONE platform was chosen. Pebble watches are 89 dollars US. Android 4.0 devices can be had for less than 40 bucks in some instances. Yes, it would be nice to have cake and eat it too, but again, this is a ONE person developer. I am a fervent backer and tester of his project. But there are no "developers". There is just a "Developer" (singular). If Graham is able to port this to other watch platforms I am all for it, as yes, it would make it easier for others who already have other platforms. For those that don't, affordability is/was key. Just a note from someone who has used this for over a year now with a child who has nocturnal seizures.

Thank you for taking time to develop your app for your son, our best wishes to you and your family. My daughter suffers from nocturnal seizures and your app has helped us sleep better. She also feels relief knowing that her watch will send the signal in time for us to reach her. She is 12 years old and she needs her privacy, with your help it has restored that. We have tested it several times before we were confident that it does what you say, and we cannot thank you enough for your hard work.

A very well thought out and implemented android and pebble solution for epilepsy monitoring. Look forward to others with or caring for epilepsy trying this for themselves, spreading the word and providing feedback to developer.

However this is not for me as this is for tonic clonic seizures and I have myclonic seizures. I also noticed one bug so far on the watchapp (I think). When I had a notification the watchapp gave an alarm after the pebble vibrated. Anyway, good luck with that and I'm glad to see someone developing for epilepsy. I've read your story and it touched me. In case you don't know, next month, 26 March, is Purple Day, Epilepsy awareness day. Search for it, maybe it will help you too. Take care, Dan.
