The Spectator Magazine for Android
New app version has fixed the bug of frequent crashing. But it has introduced a new problem. When I try to scroll down a page quickly, the text bounces upwards as if held by a rubber band. Very odd. It forces me to read slowly, scroll slowly, and not skim articles.
The Spectator in digital form. I love it!
I love the Spectator, I really do. But this app is an embarrassment. It habitually crashes, is very clunky, and not very readable. Might I propose looking at the Economist app as a model? Their app (not their newspaper though) is far superior.
Even in the latest version ! If you choose to archive an issue under Android 6 the apps says "resetting" does not archive and fails to load. Needs uninstalling and reinstalling to get it to load and then redownload the issues again. Needs an urgent fix ! Now 2 stars
You can't change font size, you can't zoom in on illustrations. This was previously possible. And if you leave it open and do something else, when you return it crashes. Not good enough for an expensive subscription app.
Rubbish at this point. Kept crashing so reinstalled. Now I cannot activate it as the activate button is greyed out. If this keeps up I'm cancelling my subscription. Did anyone test this app?
Quite a simple, utilitarian app, which I like - it gets the job done with minimal fuss. Its ease of use I imagine is appreciated also by the older, or at least less technologically-adept, reader. The only additiion I'd suggest making is the ability to change the size of the text.
Great content and a nice app. However, the app crashes regularly which is very distracting.
When scrolling down the left hand menu - to get to Dear Mary, for example - reaching the bottom of the list crashes the app...
Share article doesn't work on android. Get %url where the URL should be.
Shockingly buggy, which is a shame because when it works the content is all there and fairly easy to access
Great magazine. Sound.
A vast improvement on the previous app. It reads very well, especially when using Chromecast to cast onto an HD TV - nice and clear text. Podcast feature is a much welcome development. However, I have to downland the issue to listen to it. Perhaps make it more accessible? Also app fails to start on first opening.
This is a comment on the updated version (August 2016), specifically version 3.0.0.2310.1099. It still crashes every time on start-up: requires a reset and memory clear to run. Also, as far as I can see, the developers have removed the option to change font size. They specifically solicit feedback and reviews here. But then ignore it. Content: 5 stars. App: 0 stars if possible.

This app stops every time I start it, so I have to start it again - crazy! Don't bother with it until they sort it out. I will change my rating & commentary when (if) they do.
Flaky app , dont bother til they sort it. can I give less than 1 star. This is about 0.5 star

So much better than the previous version.
Great improvement
Running on a samsung galaxy s5, crashes every time I try to open the most recent magazine within the app. Unusable in its current form. Very disappointing, especially considering there is a prominent full page advert within the Spectator magazine encouraging you to download the app!
If, when starting the app, I'm not connected to the internet, performance drops to a snails pace making the app unusable. This is a shame as I'd intended to read the downloaded content while commuting and off-line. Also, the text size is way too small forcing me to use the Android magnifier, which is a nuisance. But apart from all that it's perfectly fine.
Hasn't worked from start. Must download edition in order to read. But doesn't download. When occasionally get access it crashes. Great mag. Pity about the app.

I am having the same problems as the majority of readers. Unstable app, constantly crashing, unacceptably slow to respond. Spectator magazine is a brilliant publication, and I expect better than the current app from them. Why have they released this application with their name attached to it, and why, after all the negative comments have they failed to replace it with a superior one? Please take responsibility for this failure and rectify it Spectator!!
Excellent magazine let down by a poor app. Downloading cannot take place automatically or on the background; app takes a long time to load and often hangs at a black screen when opening an issue and navigation is clunky and unresponsive. Suggest the designers look at The Economist app and do the same. UPDATE: Upgraded to Galaxy Note 4, and now the app crashes immediately after opening an issue.
Slow. Clunky. Crashes. For an app that only needs to display text, this app rates as one of the worst I use.
I've been a very keen reader of the hard copy of the magazine but my eyesight is now poor so I welcomed the digital edition for my tablet. However, like ,many of your e- readers I find it crashes continually. With so many criticisms I would have thought the developers would have corrected the errors by now. I'll hang on for another week or two of the trial period in the hope that improvements will be made before I have to cancel
It quite simply doesn't work. Not much else to say, it's totally useless.
I quite often find reviews are only left when there are problems or are for older versions of the app so like to try things myself. The reviews here are actually still valid- app sucks! Constantly crashes, can't open the magazine. Useless!
The magazine itself I love. The app just ,makes it pretty much unreadable though
App takes forever to download a new edition even on a fast connection. It seems to lock up entirely once it has loaded and is simply an exercise in frustration.
Too much data and can't delete issues when read
Poorly coded, awful layout. Aesthetically vile; am I at the end of the article? - who knows?! I am going to cancel my subscription.
Best weekly read available
Unusable, as it always crashes when opening. Using LG Nexus 5.

Total rubbish. App won't stay open on my Nexus 7 2012 model long enough even to log in, never mind get to any content. Avoid
It doesn't work.

Previous app version loaded really quickly. The latest version now spends an age "checking for new content" irrespective of whether there is an active internet connection. Why not just have a schedule option to download new content? I have told the app to only download when on wifi so why does it need to check for content when I am not on wifi? Tempted to uninstall and cancel my subscription if this isn't fixed
