About Locate

Make the most of your adventures in the great outdoors with OS Locate. Used alongside your Ordnance Survey map, OS Locate is a fast and highly accurate means of pinpointing your exact location on the map, anywhere in Great Britain. If you have lost your bearings or simply would like a little reassurance, OS Locate is the ideal companion for all enthusiasts of the great outdoors.

The app converts GPS location readings from your mobile phone to Ordnance Survey National Grid references, enabling you to determine precisely where you are on an Ordnance Survey map. No mobile signal? No problem; OS Locate does not require a mobile signal to function – the inbuilt GPS system can be relied upon, even in the most remote areas.

Simply download the app and switch on your device’s location services (Settings – Privacy – Location services).

Compass accuracy: the app relies on your device's internal compass and if this is inaccurate the displayed compass will be incorrect as well. Accuracy generally increases the longer you have the app open and many users report moving the device in a figure-eight help calibrate the compass and gives a more accurate reading. Of course, like any compass, keep away from metallic or magnetic objects!

OS Locate is packed with additional features. The ‘Share’ button allows you to connect with friends and family via messaging and social media – let them know where you are, how your adventure is progressing and what time you will be home. Use the handy digital compass to take your bearings – always ensuring you are on the right track. For those who are keen to learn more about maps and navigation, the ‘About’ button hosts a wealth of information including hints and tips and a guide to map reading. In addition, you will find simple yet comprehensive guides on how to use eastings and northings.

OS Locate – know where you are.

OS Locate is a complementary tool for Ordnance Survey paper maps. You should always have an Ordnance Survey paper map and baseplate compass when exploring the great outdoors.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Please ensure your Location Services are turned on.

What are users saying about Locate

This was working well. Unfortunately the latest version has "negatively upgraded" so that the grid reference is off the bottom of the screen. It still tells me I am in square SU but I could be in Wimborne Minster or 87 miles away in Amersham. So until this is rectified it is not worth having.

S70%
by S####:

Basically it's inaccurate. Out by 40 m and 30 degrees. It's a novelty only but useless when you need a compass.

S70%
by S####:

Gives a result immediately without waiting for GPS so really needs to say how got result and give an estimated accuracy (in contrast OS Mapfinder can take forever to get a fix). Could usefully display numbers of paper maps associated with the reading. Six figure reference seems a bit vague. Eight or ten should be options. Six figure reference appears truncated rather than rounded when compared to eight figures from OS Mapfinder.

The compass works fine but on my Samsung phone the grid references can't be seen. It does show the Lat & long but as I wanted the "locate" bit of the app when walking on the hills as a back up to a paper map this is no good for me.

by J####:

In my job we use a map with 6 digit Eastings and Northings. They seem to work, so I assume that's the correct way. This app uses 3 digit values with no explanation.

S70%
by S####:

Grid coordinates accurate but altitude reads 152m when I'm at 100m. Also compass was between 5 and 30 degrees out when compared with two silva compasses. This is more than enough to kill an unskilled navigator.

Excellent map tool for beginners great tutorial via the about page love it don't know experienced users are complaining about 8 or 10 figure grid references for yes OK it's more accurate but beginners will struggle here

I used this app on my Nexus 6P in conjunction with my OS paper map in the Derbyshire Dales. Simple to use and transfer. I knew my position exactly every time. Very good.

Impossible to read grid reference on Samsung galaxy s7 . Rendering this app totally useless . Thankfully I checked before it was require .

D70%

Depending on orientation of phone a bearing can vary by up to 80 degrees. I note that quite few people seem to be relying on digital devices for map reading. There is NO substitute for being able to read a map and use a manual compass. Digital devices are ok as a guide. A manual compass NEVER lies. And before anyone asks; l have considerable experience navigating in extreme terrain - with map and compass.

Simple easy interface. Needs the _option_ for more precise calculation/display of grid ref to at least 4 digits which would roughly match the lat/lon precision.

The compass is not at all accurate.

Good app but please let users opt for 8 or 10 figure grid ref.

Liked the app but not tested rigorously. Sadly the compass simply doesn't work on my new HTC Desire 620. Potential users need to be warned about sensors required in a smart phone when buying a new model. OS could help clarify which sensors are required

Since the app was updated, i have the same problem as other users: i can no longer see the grid reference, only the top half, so no use to me

N70%
by N####:

It is a great app and very useful with a super interface... so long as you are not using it on a BlackBerry Passport with a square screen where the eastings and nor things do not display. (The info is actually there and can be found by sending a message.) I know we Passport users are a minority but it would be cool if the app could be made to display properly on this and similar phones.

Works ok but grid ref mostly obscured by elevation bar on my Samsung Galaxy S4 making it hard to see which is the point of it. Don't want to know how high I am just where.

C70%
by C####:

Sony Experia Z3 compact, no issues at all. Used it over a few days in the Lakes, Fantastic to have a grid ref within seconds and takes all the guess work out of "is that a mast or a church spire and just how far along this ridge or path are we.". Compass and height are way out but to be honest I only needed the grid ref and ignored the rest, so don't throw away your map and compass! There is an icon which showed your position on the actual OS map, I haven't downloaded any explorer maps so it was the basic scale version and no use for paths but great as an overview and would certainly get you back to a village and more importantly the pub!

On my Xperia E there isn't room for the map reference. There is however room for a huge and totally unnecessary OS LOCATE banner at the top of the screen. Display that in a smaller font or better still not at all and this would be a great app. As it stands a GPS locator that does't even display yor map reference isn't even worth one star. What developer thinks a banner with the name of the app is more important than the one bit of information the app is supposed to display? Worse still this latest update is supposed to work better on small screens. I dread to think what it was like on the old version.

Frozen. Nothing works on HTC 610. Uninstalled and tried again but still frozen. Worked straight away on my wife's IPhone.

This app was just what I wanted but was disappointed. Compass works well but sometimes it shows my position and other times it does not. The share function sends a broken website link and when I emailed the developer about this I got no reply.

Since upgrading my phone and the app it no longer shows the altitude measure. It always stays at 0m. Please sort it out as it is a very useful and simple app.

grid references are very accurate but altitude is totally unreliable.

Y70%
by Y####:

How is the altitude determined? I'd like it to use my current location to query your mapping servers rather than use my mobile sensors. Also, could you provide a setting to display the altitude in feet? Also be clearer that the altitude is relative to sea level. I will consider increasing my rating if these issues are addressed.

This is the sort of app i was looking for and from a trusted source. The only disappointment is the lack of a gps position confidence level e.g. +/-10m

C70%
by C####:

The basic function of giving a UK grid ref is fine, but I would prefer 8 or 10 figure options to be included. Also the compass feature was dangerous in my opinion. When I tested it it was 10 to 15 degrees out. If it is not accurate then why bother. I will be sticking with Viewranger. Sorry OS. Dawn Hopley. Search Manager. Staffordshire Search & Rescue.
