MapFinder for Android
Useless app. Sync button doesn't work. Downloaded map tile on my tablet. Tried to download same tile (which Google says I already own) onto my phone and no sync. Rubbish not worth the one star I had to give.
Although it was obvious from the long standing significant bugs and quirks that further development had effectively ceased some time ago, I was disgusted to read that map tiles would supposedly no longer be updated. That was never the deal. Updates for the life of the app was the deal and that is still what the OS website says. I was still purchasing them from time to time not knowing the goalposts had been moved. That is shameful. They will trade past purchases for Premium access to OS Maps but I doubt I'll find that particularly useful and the deal really isn't very generous. I've now deleted the app to cut my significant losses and give me back my phone memory (maps not using the SD card as claimed was one of the bugs).
Tile rendering in a spiral around current location is painfully slow even on Galaxy S7! Please fix asap. Blue location circle often gets big and zooms away to another part of the map momentarily. These issues have persisted for years! OS happy to take money for tiles but not provide a decent app.
Maps are very expensive for the area of each 'tile' I had to buy 4 x 25k to cover one walk as it happened to be in the corners of the squares. The main map which you use to see where you want to buy maps is rubbish, blurry and way too large a scale to be useful so you almost have to buy the 50k version just to confirm what 25k tiles you need. The interface when walking is VERY basic, nowhere near as good as other apps and the OS position icon with an arrow (which doesn't move as you'd expect) is confusing.
Purchased maps appear in my catalogue with a code to describe the map. Would be essential to be able to rename each map with a friendly name, or at least have a separate editable field. The best maps you can buy, but lack of investment in the app team will damage your stellar reputation.
Maps are expensive. GPS lock is pathetic, never locks on and jumps from places to places. GPS doesn't automatically update itself either. When it does lock on its never in the right place even tho other apps can get my location right. Waste of money.
Mile by mile it has to be the most expensive map app based on OS mapping... By quite a margin.... And it's a double kick in the teeth to find out that the significant amount of money I've spent on installing maps on this app is now wasted as they can't be transferred to the new os maps app. I do like the fact all the maps are stored on the device, it makes the app huge but no data connection is required.
As per other reviews, thought I would buy this as it would have been handy for work. But 69p for a tiny tile download makes for a very expensive app for the area I need. I dont mind paying but not that much.
Will let you buy a map tile and look at it. You can also draw lines crudely. And that appears to be it. Can't print. Doesn't measure accurately. You'll like it if your expectations aren't high, but you'd be better off with paper. No batteries to fail on the hill and you can write on it.
This app used to be very good can't buy regional maps anymore so very expensive. I use Iphone 6+ which doesn't track my route anymore, spent a fortune on downlaoding maps and i feel totally ripped off also customer service very poor don't answer emails, sadley next stop trading standards to make them talk to me.
AVOID THIS APP! OS have abandoned updating it (over 2 years) and any money you spend on map tiles can't be transferred to OS's new app! Based on how they treated this one I would avoid that too and go with something like ViewRanger instead.
Rarely review, however this app got me so cross I had to! After a huge install and multiple downloads, running it for the first time it is just useless. The app downloads 2 files every time I open it, why? Then thinking they are the 2 files in the “My maps section” I click on one and what happens…. It downloads again! It then says “Unable to install map at this time” Every time! No way will I risk buying tiles with this app. The iOS version is fine and I spent a lot on maps. Zero £ here! Bye!
Great App. I use it whenever I go on holiday in the UK. I never get lost with it. If I stray even 50m off the correct path I can check with this app. Better - more useful - with a larger screen than a small one. Great for tracking. Once a map is bought you can clear it from memory if you have too many maps installed and then download it again for free when you need it again; so it does not consume too much memory. Love it!
I bought a map via this app before knowing that the app was no longer being maintained. The map would not download. I had missed the google 2 hour refund period so i sent a refund request to the customer services email address in the google invoice. I did not receive a reply so i called ordnance survey only to be told that this was the incorrect email address. I have now been given the correct address and await a reply. DO NOT BUY MAPS VIA THIS APP.
Actually nicer than OS Maps in some ways. Allows zooming in further, which makes it easier to read the map. But, after buying a few map tiles, I discovered that this app is no longer under development, and tile purchases can't be transferred to the new OS Maps app. At the very least, the fact that this app has been abandoned should be flagged at the top of the app listing and in the tile purchase path.
Obligatory 600Mb of road maps means I'll have to uninstall this as I don't have much space. Why not make the offline road map optional? I can only think the lack of effort OS has put into this app is because they underestimate the potential demand. People love the clarity, detail and general look of OS maps and would be prepared to pay for them if the app were a bit better!
Better than before, gpx import actually works, and the interface is better. The maps are unbeatable, but pricy. Bad bits.. The screen jumps between overview/1:50000/1:25000 as you zoom, it needs an option to lock map type. Finally it will only load one gpx at a time, it needs an option to group routes by type, and load all. Finally a satellite image layer would be good..
Hasn't been updated in a year and a half despite many bugs needing fixes. OS have launched a new map app and it seems like this has been abandoned but all the purchased tiles I've spent money on are not transferable!
Installed as a friend had the app, looked useful with the purchase of regional maps being cheap enough (about £11) to offset the large download. Turns out you can no longer buy regional maps, just much smaller tiles at 69p each. To get the same coverage as a regional map will cost a fortune at roughly £140!
I have bought four map tiles and tried to download them and got the message "cannot download at this time" over and over again. Support were not willing to do anything and were disbelieving of the whole thing despite all the detail i gave them.
....and all you get for that is a fuzzy map of the UK showing only primary roads! The only usable part is a demo of the Exeter area with full zoom and detail. You can then buy map tiles for the rest of the country, but they cover a tiny area and are pretty expensive. Utter rip off. Utter waste of time and device storage. UNINSTALLED!
Hasn't been update in ages so it doesn't work on Marshmallow. It is extremely basic and very temperamental now. ViewRanger is so much more polished and map tiles are a fraction of the price. And what's with downloading massive files every single time I open the app?
Slow getting GPS lock, even when device already has one, and slow to recover GPS after app switched out. Location too slow to refresh and direction arrow is nonsense. Search always takes two goes to wake up the gazetteer which is useless: e.g. offers names of roads but not the towns or villages you are more likely to be looking for. Maps expensive compared to paper. Creates folder on external SD card but never uses it despite their claims to contrary.
OS have developed three apps that don't talk to each other. Redeem a paper map through the OS maps app it has no knowledge of a downloaded map tile through Map Finder. So I have electronic os maps on two different apps. Also os locate doesn't talk to the other two. Add in the confusion of the os subscription service and the whole thing is a mess. It's a shame because it is nearly there. But it does not make your phone a replacement for a device like a Satmap yet.
In order to get a section if the south west coast path I had to buy two tiles which were 90% water which were almost as expensive as normal tiles. To make things worse it then would not install the tiles. Doesn't work at all on Android 7 when installing. Not at all acceptable for a paid for app. OS need to hire some developers who speak English, are based in the UK and actually know what the hell they're doing.

The app downloads 2 files every time I open it, why? Then thinking they are the 2 files in the “My maps section” I click on one and what happens…. It downloads again! Easy way to carry and access good quality maps, and can zoom, which is handy. But I don't see why so much data needs to be stored on the device, when it could easily be stored on the SD. Currently 694MB on my phone, with only 2 map tiles.
Thanks, O.S., for offering this alternative to the subscription version! But as many people have noted, improvements are needed. Adding highlighter-type notes to maps? An overview chart of the map tiles, showing the name of each tile? And the chief bug of the two 'free' maps always trying to download, and always failing (after seemingly getting 99% of the way there!) I was hoping I could delete them to make it stop, but no go. Can't buy them, can't get rid of them. Thankfully all the other tiles work fine.
Don't understand what people are moaning about. This beats pockets full of paper & does it well. So it may not be to everyones idea of "material design" but I go hiking & camping & this app has never let me down. Perhaps people whose outdoor experience doesn't leave the tarmac should stick with google maps... Oh... & of course an anorak.
This app needs a way to be able to select and purchase multiple tiles in one transaction. It's rather awkward having to buy each tile individually if you need quite a few of them.
Purchased maps appear in my catalogue with a code to describe the map. Would be essential to be able to rename each map with a friendly name, or at least have a separate editable field. The best maps you can buy, but lack of investment in the app team will damage your stellar reputation.
I go walking quite a lot and this app is perfect for my needs. I can plan my route in advance and then all I need is my phone rather than taking a paper map that might get damaged or damp. There seem to be quite a few very critical reviews of this app, but I don't understand most of them - they don't match my experience at all.
then you enter a payment battle with Google Play first money taken then money paid back. I lost count of what I was pressing and seem to have paid for unwanted rubbish. I can forgive Apple now.
The app has lots of issues, but there is always a work around. It's just knowing how to do it, and what causes the error. Eg, the sample maps don't work. So don't try to install, they'll always fail. If your settings are set to wifi only, you can't buy any squares when on network (but the app just says 'cannot buy'). So you need to know to change this setting. As other reviews have pointed out, the install is huge. So make sure you launch the app for the first time on wifi unless you have a good data bundle
Running vanilla Android 6 on Nexus 6, so should be okay, but cannot get any maps to load above the base. This app is fine on iOS... Looking at app description no update for a year. Update - Tried on new Samsung S7 Edge: same problem.
First of all I only got a Moto G with 8gb storage and no slots for extra memory cards. I only had 500mb available so I had to delete photos videos and apps to make space. After I had paid nearly £6 for some map tiles of the area I was planning a walk with kids (Edale to Glossop). Half way up Kinder Scout, I took to this app only to find it wanted or needed to download something and it couldn't because I had no internet connection. So with no other map I had to back track the way we started from. So annoying
I'm absolutely gobsmacked by how much space this app takes up and I can't even relocate it to sd card! Also, apart from the very first use, every time I open the ****ing thing, it starts to download a ton of data, which then won't fit, rendering the app completely useless as I can't get past the "downloading..." screen. And I've bought map tiles which I now can't even view! Thanks a ****ing bunch, idiots.
The aplication in itself I found to be very easy to use and navigate around, I have only had it downloaded for a couple of hours and have already ploted multiple routes with great easy. The map tiles are a tad steep on price and it would be nicer to be able to buy entire maps rather then just 10x10km tiles but with some small improvements which are on the way in the future will make it great
Once installed from Play store then says needs more data and downloads 650Mb - completely ridiculous. Quality of mapping on screen, tried both phone and tablet is very poor and pixelated when you try to zoom in to street level. Buying a map - why is my home centered on paper maps but online map border passes right through middle of village meaning would need to buy 2 maps. Cost not the issue but serious concerns over quality based on preloaded maps. Really can see no point to this. OS should be able to do better, Very poor mobile implementation of excellent paper based maps.

A very poorly executed app. The maps are very good as one would expect but the app is poorly written. There are issues with the GPS location constantly dropping in and out which renders the app useless for finding your location. Other apps can provide accurate continuous location (and use OS maps via Bing). The map tiles are expensive considering the limitations of the app. It appears to be a poor attempt to derive income from the OS maps without any consideration for the user. The appearance of OS maps with no possibility of transferring purchased maps is a cynical move to rip users off.
