The Independent Daily Edition for Android
Not sure what other people's issues are with this digital paper, best one I've seen as far as I'm concerned and the closest feel to reading an actual newspaper (I do miss the physical Independent!).
If you like very obviously biased, left wing drivel - This is the app for you.
The news is quality, what you would expect from The Independent. However, the app lets it down by regularly hanging up and insisting on showing ad pages for paying subscribers. Subscribed for a month but no thanks now.
The Independent has gone WAY FURTHER LEFT since it went online. Very Disappointing - been reading for decades
Signed up for 3 month subscription and can't access it either on phone or web
Updated: It does the basics – rendering the (excellent) paper articles in an easily readable form on phone or tablet which from reviews, other newspaper apps don’t a lot of the time. Now seems to have everything that the paper version had. Also pictures now render full screen when you tap on them (used to just go black). No video clips (like the Times) or index of articles (the free version does). Downloads in the background when on wifi.
Have been a subscriber to the Indy since day 1. Without that I am not sure I would have persevered with an app that keeps crashing. Content is still improving and Robert Fisk and Patrick Cockburn absolutely essential journalists to keep us honest.
Update. The app now crashes before fully opening, leaving me o choice but to uninstall. Most of the news apps I've tried are pretty clunky and so is this one. But it's not the worst and is perfectly useable. As someone who doesn't read a newspaper every day and doesn't want to be tied into a monthly subscription I particularly like the option to subscribe monthly, weekly or just for a single issue.
Mostly fine but click on the picture and you just get a blank screen, shame given the focus on photography. Sometimes smooth other times as you scroll the next page hasn't loaded. Fiddly to pull up menu (appears when you want it not when you don't). Also please bring back the quiz!
Current version 'has stopped', even after re-install. I think thats about it for me. Previous version : I've been using this for a week now, on the 2 month free trial. As was with the printed paper, still love the writing, but the presentation is awful (same on ipad, tried that too in desparation). Shouldn't be that hard to sort out, plenty good examples to learn from, hopefully it'll happen before the end of the free trial.
Android tablet version crashes after a couple of minutes reading EVERY time. Phone and iPad versions seem OK. Content is a shadow of what was in the old print edition. Get The i newspaper - 40p, more content, better presented, easier to read.
Latest version of the app has not worked on over a week on my Nexus 7 (but is fine on my Sony Z3 Compact). Very frustrating! Even before this week the app sometimes started, sometimes didn't. A much less smooth experience than on my iPad Mini 2 which just works. Please make the Android app work as well as the Apple one!
App has lags and stutters which causes FPS drops here and there. Fix the app maybe? Actually it doesn't download new issues automatically.
I would like to know how to direct downloaded editions to SD card. Also access to some means of archiving/deleting multiple editions rather than one at a time. I think downloads to one device lead to the download being replicated to another device which I wouldn't normally want. So this is a request for some options to manage storage space better since it is a recurring problem on Android devices.
Somehow they have managed to make this app, which displays pre-downloaded content, slower than apps which only download the articles when you decide you want to read them (e.g. The Guardian app). Given that The Independent is now digital only this is very poor from their perspective as well.
Many/most images other than that at the top of the page are not shown if offline at the time you go to that page, just a blank placeholder, along with the caption. If you then disconnect and move off the page, the images are gone when you return. Some images show full-screen when tapped, most show a black screen, online or not. *NOW FIXED* A significant part of the content is USA originated, esp. The Washington Post, some Newsweek. Stupid level of typos, even in headlines.
Does not recognise the gpay certificate so I can't get it. Helpline only response has been to ask if I still have the problem. Goodwill evaporated.
On kindle fire downloads reasonably quickly. On Samsung ace 3 it once downloaded wirelessly..... I have been trying for 4 hours this morning off and on.... including reinstalling the app... The content has improved but I want to be able to download it on my phone without it taking such a long time!!!
"Get the Picture " , a bit of Saturday fun is back. The app is now usable and we believe in paying for quality journalism, so we are subscribing again! Well done Indy !!
Very poor presentation; very biased recently! Would not recommend as it's just a waste of storage space!
This piece of crap used up all my Sunday reading time and all my battery just trying to login. Still waiting for today's edition to download. Going straight to website to cancel my subscription!!!!
Absolute rubbish. Don't waste your time.
Rubbish. Spend all the time I should be reading trying to make the app download the content. Waste of space. Now refusing to accept my login details or update app. I want a refund for having to put up with all this stupidity.
Complete biased news, should just be changed to labour remain news, general election you got wrong, referendum you got wrong, biased reporting is only sinking your ship
It works well on my Note, much better than the free 'Live' app. And it downloads every day, ready for reading, unlike the Ipad version. However, you can't click on the pictures and see them as you can on the Ipad.
I was expecting access to the Web pages content at least. Instead, I got a worthless app, not showing even the free content.
Just mini front pages asking you to buy each copy / download of the paper.
Doesn't work. Please fix for android n!
What happened to my free news that came with my phone?
Been using this app on my Note 4 with no problems. Pages are easy to navigate and read.
Long road ahead.
Doesn't work
Great newspaper. Paperless but still with the same integrity
Good content.
Want to see this news source survive now that it is digital only but the crossover from paper has been ill-conceived resulting in this buggy app. Randomly downloads daily edition automatically and fails to boot up past the title screen often (a 2nd attempt fixes this usually). Paying customers deserve better so it is in your interest to sort it out.
Bought monthly subscription via app store. Download update to app, now doesn't recognise my subscription, asking me to pay again. Instructions in app say tap on the restore button in app purchases but restore button doesn't exist! No other way to log in. Crap!
I signed up for a 2 month free trial, was charged within 2 days. Even without that issue, the app is buggy in several ways, and if you try to contact customer services they don't reply. Avoid.
"Problem with the verification service" what's happened? Tried reinstalling, still issues
I bought a subscription and it doesn't work!

This is the third time I've had to uninstall and reinstall this, all because it just it means up downloading. If it happens again, I'm cancelling my subscription and going back to paper copies. Make that the fourth time... Getting thoroughly sick of this...
