What are users saying about The Economist: World News

by K####:

Use it mostly for the audio version. App often forgets where I stopped listening last time. Has the most infuriating add that pops up just as you're about to click and article. Content is great though.

K70%
by K####:

Version 2.5.5 has completely broken my primary use case - listening to the Economist while driving. It halts between articles when transitioning out of range of WiFi. Bookmark functionality - resuming anywhere near when I left off - is completely broken.

K70%
by K####:

Good app but now I don't get the audio controls in the notification area anymore. Listening crashes the app far too often. This was a really important feature so please fix.

K70%
by K####:

Audio is miserable. Unless the app is the only thing running, it stops randomly and requires restating the app, looking at the terrible slide away popup, finding my place again. This can't be hard. Please fix.

Y70%
by Y####:

I need a place to view all the issues I bought. I don't like swiping forever.

B70%
by B####:

The journalism is great, and I wouldn't be without it, but... ... the app is not very impressive. The newspaper part of the app is OK, but even after you've downloaded an issue it will often stop to 'check for updates' and you won't be able to go any further and read it, even if you've just downloaded it. No problem if you're at home, but if you're on the go, this is painful. The audio part of the app (which is a brilliant idea) is even more frustrating. It is slow, hungry and has the same issues with stopping to check for updates every so often. Listening to it on your commute will require a decent connection at regular intervals. If there is an update available (I assume when articles have been corrected) it will dump the downloaded audio and you will have to download it again. If there is no connection available, you won't be able to listen to it, even if you've downloaded it. On top of that, it is obviously designed to remember where you were, or what you were listening to last, but it doesn't work so it ends up taking you back to illogical places. It feels like it has been well thought out, and then never tested.

K70%
by K####:

Latest update crashes even more than before when listening to audio, as well as losing the notification to be able skip articles

I70%
by I####:

Straight forward and easy to use app. Much better than apps from some Canadian Newspapers which are cumbersome to use.

K70%
by K####:

Audio broken, stuttery, glitchy and requires restarting the app over and over. Par for the course sadly.

U70%

Wryly comical is "The Economists" deliverance of truth in a bewildering world.

K70%
by K####:

Forgets current article position after screen rotation

S70%
by S####:

Good analysis - I'm a lefty and disagree frequently but I always come out having learnt something.

K70%
by K####:

There's a bug when I try to share articles directly via WhatsApp. I am very happy with the product nevertheless.

K70%
by K####:

The most recent update removed the audio widget, which makes it harder to listen to.

K70%
by K####:

Good app, but needs to keep the article that you were reading open, it always exits when you exit.

T70%
by T####:

Oof. Audio is very broken.

K70%
by K####:

articles can be shared to a number of social sites and media why not whatsapp?

S70%
by S####:

Generally a good app. What I miss is the app remembering where I was in the article if I reopen it after a few hours.

K70%
by K####:

Excellent!

R70%

Love it.

K70%

Enlightening

K70%
by K####:

Crashes frequently, notifications with articles to read never lead to the actual article, either the front page of the app or a crash. Finding articles in the app is hard. Seems to be focused around the "reading a full magazine" experience rather than the read an article you are interested in experience, so UI design is not working for me. Mobile website is better.

L70%
by L####:

New version is solid and dependable. Easy to navigate, skip past articles or read as I choose. The Economist itself provides a balanced global perspective that is becoming rarer in these days of national and partisan news.

K70%
by K####:

I love this app especially listening to the audio and reading offline. However I do have one major problem . The app does not bookmark the place you last read. You have to scroll through the sections each time.

K70%
by K####:

The content is amazing. The app keeps losing data even after download.

K70%
by K####:

The app functioms as it should

M70%

Used it for many years. Well done Economist perhaps you can teach the Times some lessons in how to do a great app! Update for the latest version, sorry you loose a star because everytime you leave the app when you go back in to continue reading it takes you back to the title page, the old version used to keep your place. It has something to do with the advertising as when you come back it, it see where you were for 1/10 sec and then it takes you back to the initial advert. Please fix this

U70%
by U####:

Shows me all Economist releases that I missed before getting a subscription. Uploads before I get the printed edition I ever want to preview or get an early jump on my reading. The Economist is one of the best news magazines. Its Eurocentrism does hinder it when talking about the Eastern world, but it gives a deeper look into world issues than any American outlet would.

F70%
by F####:

Downgrading my rating to one star as I no longer can get the audio edition to play in the background on my priv without crashing 5m in. This used to be a fantastic app, and I will consider this when my renewal comes up in 2019 Downgrading my rating as the audio edition UI/UX has degraded. Also, sometimes the audio playback goes at 1.5x speed, so I get my weekly updates from British chipmunks.

K70%
by K####:

This app is not as user friendly as the older versions. The seamless coordination of audio and the news stories is gone. You can't pick up audio where you stop. This app is just manageable. For those of us using the audio, it is poor a big regression on the last version.

Z70%
by Z####:

The content is great but the app could do with some improvements. It doesn't always track which article you've been reading/listening to. I've heard that Apple version of the app allows you to speed up the audio. That would be very useful.

K70%
by K####:

Great content. But this version of the app is bad. Audio playback sometimes drops out when you switch apps. Always loses track of the last article you listened too. Dissappointing

K70%
by K####:

The app gives free access to only 3 articles per issue which is quite small. It be increased to 4 or more. In addition, It does not allow users to choose their preferred articles or news and can improved by giving users the option to choose.

K70%
by K####:

Good journal but poor app. When opening an issue it goes through many screens, before you land on an advertisement. This feels amateurish. Audio is worse, difficult to use. Used to be better

B70%
by B####:

Very good interface and I find I am reading The Economist more and more on my phone. BUT at times my HTC Desire does not pick up new issues. It's now Saturday morning and Thursdays issue is still not available

K70%
by K####:

I love the economist but app is very glitchy. The audiobook doesn't play the whole articles, crashes at least twice through an article. Has no bookmark and plays right from the beginning. These crashing makes me not want to use economist. Please fix the app!!!!

F70%
by F####:

I'm a big fan of the Economist. Your content is really good. But you guys need to improve your app.example: I can't share the pics or cartoons in my social media. Please keep improving it. I want to bookmark it favourite some articles for later.

U70%
by U####:

The content is top notch. However, the audio version is very unstable. If I could listen to the (fantastic) news for 30 minutes without crashes, this would get a five star.
