About Guthan Beaga (Small Voices)

This mobile application is designed to be used in conjunction with the Guthan Beaga website which can be found at www.guthanbeaga.co.uk.

Guthan Beaga is designed to introduce the parents of very young children enrolled in (Scottish) Gaelic Medium education to useful words, phrases, and pronunciation relating to the Scottish Gaelic language. However, it may also be useful for those who are very new to the language and are finding it hard to learn in isolation - particularly with pronunciation.

This application allows content to be used and managed offline so that parents can make the best of the resource.

Please note that to make use of this application's features you will need to download multimedia content from the web. We recommend that you should only do this when you are connected to the internet by WiFi, as downloading large files over the mobile network can cost you money. Once downloaded, the content will remain on your device and will be available whenever you need it without having to access the internet.

This is the first release of Guthan Beaga for Android, so please bear with us. If you experience any problems with the application on your device then please contact us with your issue before giving negative feedback. We will do our best to fix any problems that you may have and in the process help to support the Gaelic language.

WAS a great introduction to Gaelic. Used it for my toddler, as well as myself. The modules were downloaded onto my phone, but now they list as needing download, but every download fails. The website is gone. Very disappointing. I hope it's temporary. Three stars, as it isn't available any longer. Five when they bring it back.

I can't seem to download any of the chapters. I press it. It flickers "download" for about half a second then stops. No issues with other apps so can't be my phone.

I used to have it in another device with Android 4 and worked alright, but now, with Android 6, I cannot download a single file. Think an update would solve this problem. It would worth.

I have tried to install this app twice. It had not downloaded any content. I would like it to work as there seem to be lots of different themes. This should be great for me to use with my daughter.

Watch the video and repeat the phrase. Great for teaching your child basic Gaelic as they're geared towards parent to child phrases eg. 'Have a sleep with your teddy.' 'Mummy/Daddy loves you.' Would have liked a chapter on greeting people, 'hello', 'how are you?' etc. Would make this a 5* app if that was there.

It works well on my old xperia, although videos take up a lot of space. An identical app offering just the audio and words would have been great for low-end devices. It's a good starter for any age, although as far as I can tell it seems to lack basic greetings eg how are you, my name is etc, which should arguably be what you first get to learn, bar any alphabet or numbers. I wondered at first why the phrases were so negative, 'get off the road' etc, before realising the intended audience :)

Without question the best introduction to basic Gaelic there is. The AV is great when used in conjunction with the website.
