About The Great Brain Experiment

Are you faster or more attentive than other people? Can you remember more or make better choices? Time to test your brain and find out!

Be part of a unique scientific experiment by playing games on your phone. Neuroscientists at University College London have 'gamified' their research, creating a quirky, fun app which turns neuroscience experiments into games. Each time you play you'll be contributing data to a huge scientific experiment, taking part in research that could previously only be conducted on small groups of volunteers in the lab. The Great Brain Experiment will look at memory, impulsivity, how we take risks, and how well the mind’s eye can see. It will allow the researchers to explore questions that are normally impossible to ask.

Dr Rick Adams, from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, says: “We wanted something that shows people what neuroscience is really about. It’s not all brains in jars or men in white coats. It’s actually trying to answer questions all of us are interested in, like ‘What makes me happy?’. We hope that people enjoy our app, tell their friends and help us answer some important scientific questions along the way.”
The free app has been developed for Brain Awareness Week 2013 (11-17th March 2013) and is being supported by the Wellcome Trust.

Scored better than 99 on the only minigame that I got to work (memory). Strongly doubt it's true, rest is either very blurry or plain unplayable. Good effort though

An entertaining app that allows you to exercise your brain while contributing to research for the benefit of mankind

Instructions aren't all that clear - you can be into the game before it dawns on you what to do. And it's buggy - hangs and stops working meaning you have to exit out of the whole thing.

S70%

THE BIRDS AND LAMAAS LOOK THE SAME. and also the impulse test isn't very responsive.

Actually enjoyed the games & love the idea of this, but! On the impulse game, I have long fingernails so they obscure most of the gap between the circle & the fruit so I can't see what's going on. Maybe a lower 'tap' circle as atm I don't think you can gather any useful data from that game. The predicting the future?? Literally NO idea what's going on there at all, maybe I'm not wired in a way that suits the game but YEESH! Instructions could be a little clearer but enjoyed it overall :)

N70%

I almost didnt understand what it asked me, chose all answers randomly and finally, I was better than all people. It made me suspicious about correctness of other results.

This is much less as game; more a public experiment. This app is a phenomenal step to understanding so much more about your mind.

It's free. It's easy to play. It's fun. Download it and give it a try.

No difference at all!! Either I am damaged or this exercise needs to CLEARLY demonstrate the sound I am meant to detect.

You almost get the feeling you have any influence in this application. Great way to waste my 5 minutes, pitty I can't get a refund for that.

N70%
by N####:

I wish there are more games inside this app. I am totally happy to become participant for the games. I never knew I am really sensitive for hearing. Quite surprise for the result and the score. Good for practice my memory and reaction.

R70%
by R####:

So called stress test seems to be about motor reflex skills. I gave up at the Prediction test which seems to be about testing your psychic ability to predict the future. This is bullshit.

N70%
by N####:

Some surprises with the results. For instance my hearing is not that sensitive and nevertheless scored 70%, while my sight is better I've scored only 20%. What puzzles me is the impulsiveness test where after 7 attempts still 0%. Definitely not that impulsive.

N70%
by N####:

Some games I performed very poorly on my first go and then somehow get better than 100% of other players on the second. Also games like the listening ones are a bit dumb as it doesnt explain what you are listening for so I was basically guessing and got lucky and got better than 94% when I didn't even know what I was doing, the 50/50 choice makes it too straight forward to guess. Overall quite fun and interesting.

I can't stay still with this app because the game doesn't pull me in and I get very distracted. They should make one that is ADHD friendly because this is for a noble cause...

N70%
by N####:

Just because I'm not good at some of these is no reason to give a bad rating.

U70%
by U####:

Hated it actually. Instructions are poorly written and the game gives insufficient feedback. Couldn't understand why I had done well, or badly, most of the time so had no interest in trying to improve. Uninstalling forthwith.

E70%
by E####:

The games have names but it just gives a score that doesn't tell you. So the answer to the question about am I impulsive and what makes me happy is... Not playing idiot games with ulterior purposes, and then deleting.
