About Mandelbrot Maps

For each point in the famous Mandelbrot set fractal, there is a unique Julia set fractal parametrised by that point. Mandelbrot Maps is a fractal viewer designed to demonstrate the relationship between the two by generating the relevant Julia fractal in real-time as you move a pin across the Mandelbrot set.

Move around the fractals by dragging with one finger and pinch with two to zoom in and out. Hold your finger down to drop a pin and explore the Julia set. If you find a particularly beautiful spot, you can save the image or share it with friends.

Mandelbrot Maps is open-source software - you can find the source on my GitHub account, which is linked on this page as the developer website.

If you enjoyed using this version of Mandelbrot Maps, you might want to try Fractal Maps by Sky Welch, an updated version with improved speed and a side-by-side view - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.bunnies.fractalmaps.

Chris King has also produced a version (not currently on the Play Store) that adds several more kinds of fractal - http://www.dhushara.com/DarkHeart/MM/MandelbrotMaps.htm.

This Android port of Mandelbrot Maps is based on the original web app created by Iain Parris (http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/wadler/mandelbrot-maps/mmaps.html, http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/publications/thesis/online/IM080583.pdf) and further developed by Edward Mallia (http://edwardmallia.com/mandelbrotmaps/), and Taige Liu. All versions were done under the supervision of Philip Wadler (http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/wadler/) at the University of Edinburgh.

What are users saying about Mandelbrot Maps

by T####:

When zooming in on the third bulb, left side, app automatically closes during rendering when the third bulb takes up more than 3/4 of the screen regardless of color scheme or detail level. This seems to be the furthest I can zoom in on any point, most likely just my phone failing.

Y70%
by Y####:

Fantasic, you can zoom quite far in and the detail is amazing, only issue is that the julia gets darker and looses the colour

Y70%
by Y####:

Really quick, thousand times faster than anything else I've seen.

Y70%

Seems rather limited in what it can do. Uninstalled.

Had fun impressing my friends and family. Incredibly fast, both the zoom and the switch from Julia to Mandelbrot. Overall, 5 stars

Ever since the lollipop update I lost my preferences. Now all I can do is zoom an switch between Julian an Mandelbrot. This is one of my favorite apps. Really wish this could get fixed.

Z70%
by Z####:

I do not like that the colors change as I Zoom in and out on the mandelbrot set.

Y70%

Lost all preferences when used in Lollipop 5.0 +. Please fix, app is unusable in lollipop in it's current configuration.

Great! Awesome!

Very nice app, it's lovely moving your finger over the Mandelbrot Set and seeing how the corresponding Julia Set changes. Thanks x

Y70%

This is probably the fastest Mandelbrot fractal zoomer on the web. The zoom function is much easier to use compared to the other fractal explorers. I also like how easy it is to switch to the Julia set. Plus it's open source and ad-free. There are a few things that could improve it, however. When I try to swipe around to move the view, the Julia pin appears and is distracting. Maybe disable the julia pin from appearing while moving the view. A way to view the coordinates of the julia pin would also be nice.

doesn't overpromise, works well enough to be fun and informative ... could not find saved images, but that's ok because it can display image without adornment -> screenshot ... adding option to rotate orientation would be nice

We can easily teach fractals to students, by using this app..... ((thanks for giving this app).

Really awsome app, fantastic use of touch navigation. Sometimes after I have surfed the Mandelbrot, I find a segment I would like to get a external high resolution image of. A feature in your app that tells the coordinates and zoom would be really handy. Awsome work.

Quick even on my HTC Hero, this lets you view not one, not five, but TWO badass fractals on screen at once!

N70%
by N####:

I thought about doing something like this myself, but there's no need -- this app is so great for exploring Mandelbrot fractals!

X70%

An essential app for looking at Mandelbrot maps

Z70%

Quick and easy fun.

X70%

I'd never seen this Julia-Mandlebrot relationship before. Easy to use and clear help text re-enforcing what I'd discovered by clicking stiff. Maybe disable render time by default?

X70%
by X####:

It implements the Mandelbrot and Julia set with smooth rendering, full use of the touch screen, and well documented controls.

adb pushed it onto my sons NABI. It's great there. Add conventional 1 finger zoom for 5 stars...

very smooth, this has to be the best Mandelbrot app i have seen in a while.

Color schemes are not very good.

X70%

This is just amazing. I've got a powerful desktop PC but this renders fractals on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 at lightning speed.

X70%
by X####:

Is %2 really optimal? Try (&1) in case as ARM divide takes dozens of cycles.

U70%
by U####:

Showing renderning times by default seems annoying and default colouring schema may be better, does not look well for me at least at startup.. Otherwise it is a very nice, fast and intuitive viewer that makes great use of the touch screen.

R70%
by R####:

This is the best intro to Julia and Mandelbrot sets I have seen.

First of all - thank you! Lovely app. And a splendid undergraduate project. The detail is breath taking. It would be even better, tho, if one could have information on the number of iterations being performed. A simple counter would be adequate. Also, an optional grid for the (x,y) axes would be helpful.

Reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke's novel The Ghost From The Grand Banks. Good job guys.
