About Tacx utility

Important notice:

To use the Utility app for Android
1. Turn off all apps running in the background
2. Turn off Bluetooth and then turn it on again
3. Then start the Utility app

This is done to ensure the phone can properly connect to your trainer and send the firmware without other applications interfering.

Firmware update for:

- Bushido Smart (T2780)
- Vortex Smart (T2180)
- NEO Smart (T2800)
- Genius Multiplayer Smart (T2010)
- Genius Smart (T2080)
- Ironman Smart (T2060)
- Flow Smart (T2240)

Use the Tacx Utility app to upgrade your Smart trainer with the ANT+ FE-C protocol. With this upgrade your trainer learns the “ANT+ open language” so that it can communicate with software of third parties.

On top of reading your speed, cadence and power, you may now control the resistance of our trainers with software of others.

Smart trainers:

Smart trainers by Tacx have the following features in common:
- ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart
- Standard power and speed/cadence profile
- Stand-alone: without connecting to a device the trainer acts as if you’re riding on a flat road
- NEW: ANT+ FE-C certified

Because of these features you can use the trainer as you see fit: connect to the device you want and use the software fitting your needs.

What a hard work to get this app to work for firmware upgrade for my Tacx Neo I tried two Xiaomi and one Samsung phone but without luck. It wasn't until i tried my Beelink Android TV box I got the firmware upgrade ok. I think the problem was the phone turned off the bluetooth while uploading the firmware witch the tv box did not.

I have had problems with connecting with the trainer after updating the app. I have discovered a potential solution, which is to uninstall the old app before installing the new version, rather than updating it. I am now able to connect successfully every time I use it. I hope this helps someone.

Turns what should be a decent trainer into an expensive piece of plastic. Connects, then drops out. Calibrates, then fails again. I'm going to pursue a refund on the trainer.

Works, but very finicky on my Vortex Smart. Turn on Bluetooth, open the app and then plug the power cable in. The app will only connect during the period where the lights are blinking. Once it goes solid, no dice. After connecting the app works as advertised.

Good trainers but very poor software. This app is extremely difficult and frustrating to use. I managed to connect my trainer initially, but then couldn't repeat again. The problem is interference from other bluetooth devices. You need to switch off other devices first. I struggled until I realised it worked when my power meter head unit was switched off. So I tried switching everything off except the trainer and the app. Success, well kind of. The app is still poor, but at least calibration works. This needs sorting out as ideally you need to calibrate when the trainer is warmed up after say ten minutes. It's a faff exiting Zwift to use the app and then going back in. A real shame Tacx can't get better software for their trainers or at least useful instructions.

Firmware update fails often. If you're really lucky it will brick your trainer. Use with caution.

K70%
by K####:

It is often can't connect with Tacx Vortex trainer using Bluetooth, my phone supports ANT+ interface, I used to connect with it, but now this option disappeared without any reason, I don't know how to restore it, there is no any settings in app

Trying to update Tacx Neo . Have tried four devices what next go around my village asking if anyone has an IPhone!! Get this sorted. I have a machine I can't use!

It doesn't work... for $1900 canadian you think they could build a working app for christ's sake

Unable to connect Tacx Flow as a controllable trainer to zwift since update. FIX PLEASE

Firmware update of NEO Smart went without any problems on the first try. So far I'm happy!

Not properly compatible with the Satori Smart trainer - calibration fails every time.

Connected faultlessly with my Nexus 6p with Android O. Upgraded firmware and calibrated 1st time of trying. 5*

Worked perfectly. Followed instructions and in 10 minutes firmware was updated.

It should be so much better :/

I believe alot of the App negativity comes from poor misleading instructions provided with its usage. After reading & browsing reviews on this forum I managed to sort success in its application. My misunderstanding came about with the Bluetooth function on my mobile phone.. ie pairing the Tacx Smart Trainer to my android phone & not the App.

J70%

Used to work on occasion for calibration. That too has now stopped working over ant+ and Bluetooth. Worst app I've ever used. How can, for example, trainerroad, connect every time and the hardware manufacturer fail so completely every time?

Z70%
by Z####:

Paired trainer with phone via Bluetooth and it doesn't connect that so ever. Update was half way through and gave in my trainer won't work at all. I have to say the app made my life harder

C70%
by C####:

Crashed my NEO during update leaving the NEO useless. Not possible to fix / repair by this app. Had to borrow an iPhone to get the firmware installed - not easy either but at least got the firmware onboard and working

K70%
by K####:

Update: Trainer can report Power, but nothing else over Bluetooth and can't be controlled as before with, for example, TrainerRoad. It's effectively dead and will be going back to Tacx. Hardware is useless without solid software, Tacx can't write software, buy literally any other brand than Tacx. Truly wish I'd bought a Wahoo Kickr. Easily the worst app I've ever installed. I thought the other reviews couldn't be true, it can't be that bad.... well, it is. All seemed connected fine, but as soon as you go to update, it coverts your 1,200 GBP trainer into a paperweight. Tacx shall be refunding me the cost unless it somehow springs back into life. Whoever wrote this should be fired on the spot. A disgrace. Update: Resuscitated trainer with a completely new android phone. Trainer working, but unable to update.... App says on 0.4.2 and 0.7.5 available, so I update successfully, still on 0.4.2. Restart everything, update again, again works fine, but again still on 0.4.2. Repeat in a neverending cycle. Basically even when 'working', i.e. not bricking your trainer, this app fails to do the single task it was created for.

Work ok but when updating firmware the What's New button disappeared after updating so have no idea what the update did...

Tacx create great hardware but (almost) useless software. V1.7.4 has broken 1.7.3 dashboard and Neo road feel tests. Firmware update still hangs. UI contains uninitialised text boxes, no explanation of icons, no discoverability. For psychics only.

K70%
by K####:

I have wasted a lot of time with Neo, and the Tacx utility app. After uncountable tries the Neo firmware is updated. When installing the May 2017 release of the utility app, it do not ask for storage permissions on Android 7. Checking the app configuration on Andriod: Settings -> Applications -> Tacx utility -> Permissions -> we have to allow "Storage". Since applying this configuration, the update ran successful. Anyway, this app sucks!

Nice looking trainer! The app stank. It was rubbish it wouldn't connect at all. Complete waste of time. I will be taking back to shop and getting g refund. I am going to admit my old set up of 60 quid trainer and 19 quid Bluetooth did better than one supposedly top of the range turbo trainer. I am very annoyed in my opinion false advertising smart more like thick.

K70%
by K####:

The only useful feature of this app is calibration of the trainer, and 95% if the time it does not connect to the trainer. I've done every conceivable combination of shutting devices and or Bluetooth off/on, pairing, unpairing, etc, and it just plain doesn't work.

K70%
by K####:

Number one reason i will newer buy tacx product again.. calibration is rarely successfull with this horrible piece of "software". If I could rate this less than 1/5 I would.

K70%
by K####:

This app is like a chocolate teapot - totally useless. Never connects with phone, very disappointed.

Hopefully this will help those who have problems with this app on Android. 1. Uninstall the app (Tacx Utility) 2. Turn Bluetooth off and on again on your phone and disable all other Bluetooth connected devices (if it still doesnt work repeat step 1 and remove all paired bluetooth devices on your phone) 3. Install Tacx Utility. 4. Do not pair your trainer under the Android's bluetooth! 5. While the trainer is powered start the Tacx Utility on your Android and wait for the trainer to pop up under the Devices in the app, make sure its selected with a blue check mark beside it. 6. Go to Update and continue onwards with downloading and updating the firmware, If this doesnt work then its probably your phone and im sorry. I managed to get it to work after carefully following those steps, i work with computers so i understand these things but for the average guy to go through so much trouble of having to go through these steps to get it working is really unfortunate. You could ask yourself how they know anything about programming or make their devices to simulate bike rides when they couldnt provide a better solution for letting people upgrade their devices easier than this.

Totally, utterly, in all facets USELESS. Detects trainer, drops it. Then won't find trainer. Finds trainer, then won't calibrate it. Rubbish.

Hopeless for calibration, most frustrating process

K70%

Refused to detect the trainer via Bluetooth. Android has no trouble seeing the trainer, but this software won't detect or connect.

It does not work.

Can't connect to trainer. Zwift works fine but just need to run calibration. Come on!!!!
