J-OCR is an app that allows you to perform optical character recognition using your phone camera. Great utility tool for reading letters, signboards, instructions manuals and what not!
The OCR engine is coded in the app but the dictionary requires network access. However, since only text is being queried, this method is significantly faster and consumes less data.
Note that the dictionary is best used for Kanji and difficult terms written in Hiragana/Katakana. Simple grammatical terms may or may not be translated.
The relatively large size of the app is due to a Japanese text training file required for offline OCR.
The Free version contains ads and some limitations.

5 stars for the idea, although there are rooms for improvement. As the current stage, the quality of recognition is much dependent on the quality of camera app used. 1 suggestion: for the time being, processing text from imported picture could be useful

Works OK, but has problems on mix of Kanji and Kana. Almost as if this was made for Chinese and Kanji only. Often confuses Kana and converts it to weird Kanji. Flips camera pictures sideways for no reason, so picture must be flipped back.

J-OCR did nothing on my HTC Butterfly except generate spam: opening the app just creates links to various random advertisements for other apps, google services, etc. Touching anywhere on the screen triggers a new ad to open; I found no functionality for Japanese text recognition at all. Scary. Avoid this scam.

Stopped working. Sends you to some website. Better to use Google Translate directly, use the camera feature - much more satisfying experience...
