I cannot guarantee that this works on all phones. Install it and test it first. Please do not rate poorly solely for the fact that your device may not be supported.

Also, the location is based on cell towers, so it will not be as accurate as GPS. This is to be used as an adjunct to calling for help, not a substitute.

SOSbySMS is a small application which allows you to send an SMS (text) message to most SMS enabled devices. The information contained within the message includes a brief line indicating that you need help, the device's phone number, a link to a Google Map of your location (based on the cell signal... see below for info on this),and the time which you sent the message.

This can be used in case you are lost, involved in an accident, witness or victim to an emergency, or otherwise unable to speak to make a call for help. This application will dispatch the SMS to a contact of your choosing. It WILL NOT contact 911 or other emergency services, unless you choose them in your contacts. It IS NOT a substitute for contacting the emergency services.

This application has only been tested on a few devices, but should work on most. Please bear that in mind.

FAQs:
Q: Why use a location by cell tower/signal and not GPS?
A: GPS signals can be slow to acquire and are limited by access to the satellite signal. This means that if you are someplace where the signal can't be reached(such as a heavily wooded area or in a structure), or in a major storm where the cloud cover is hindering signal acquisition, then you won't get a location to broadcast.

Q. Why is my location off by (xx meters)?
A. Cell towers can triangulate your location to a general area, but are not all that accurate. This app is designed for rescuers to locate the general area of the device from which the message was sent, not a pinpoint location. GPS would be more accurate, but... see above.

TIPs:

Some messaging apps may not show the entire message. Please be aware of that.

Select a few trusted people and make a contact in your phone with their numbers saved in a new contact names so that they are first in your list. this will allow for easy access to their info to send a message.

Discuss with those that you will likely send an SOS to about this application and what it does. Be sure to develop a plan to ensure that the receiver knows how to respond (such as calling the local fire, EMS, and police agencies to give them the information).

If you do send a false alarm, be sure to immediately contact that person to let them know. Do not use this application for a prank or other type of gag/trick.
