Aedict OCR for Android
For one can there be an option to make the horizontal reading the default?
I did not expect this to work nearly as well as it does. When you have a lot of kanji to look up, it's faster than using the kanji pad.
Bought it with high expectations because Aedict was extremely good, but now I have buyer's remorse. It doesn't work on most of the text
It is good
Works perfect on my DoCoMo Galaxy S4. Brilliant app.
Not as accurate as Google translates free camera capture function.
I tried the app on a manga (vertical text) and it worked quite well. I had to add some small corrections (がinstead ofヵ) but I guess it will get better. After OCR'ing the text I pressed the search button... Edit: I see, you can do it from the menu! (thanks!) Also, you could add some contrast/level manual adjustment if it helps the algorithm I guess. About the price, glad to support your apps.

Went from this: "Love aedict in general but honestly this is of no use as it is. Tried different Japanese books and never got anything scanned correctly even though it works with Google translate. An offline OCR would be great so please develop this more." To this : Great tool, if you used translate you will need to re-learn how to use it. Ths thing is google translate automatically tries to get the best picture, here you have to tinkle with the camera app but once you have a clear picture this is actually superior. Although with a bad picture it is catastrophic. A great addition would be to have a button to keep the flash on until pressed again, it would help getting focus. zoom your pic to have a more precise selection, it also helps recognition. Good thing my internet box crashed and I couldn't access translate for I had given this a miss (while using aedict all the time...) I guess there is still room for improvment ergonomy wise but this is already a great tool.
